Background / History
Klein first appears as a new clerk encountered by Alice. Her spiritual premonition makes her avoid looking directly at him, while the name “Zhou Mingrui” establishes an immediate mystery around his identity. 3
He later recognizes that, despite acting under Klein Moretti’s identity and integrating fragments of the original owner’s emotions, he remains Zhou Mingrui from Earth. His original appearance has short black hair, deep brown eyes, a refined but ordinary face, visible eye bags, and the beginnings of a double chin. 161 557
Klein and Alice become natural allies after realizing that they are fellow countrymen with shared questions about their past and their world. Their cooperation begins with mutual investigation, warnings about fate, and a shared distrust of the forces surrounding Sefirah Castle. 7 20 21
After events leave Klein and Alice presumed dead, Azik helps them confront the necessity of adopting new identities. Klein subsequently uses Sherlock Moriarty and other personas to continue operating while remaining separated from his former Nighthawk colleagues and family. 37 39 67
Appearance
Klein’s appearance is highly variable due to his Faceless abilities and his reliance on public identities. His original Zhou Mingrui form differs from the scholarly, black-haired, brown-eyed image associated with Klein Moretti. 29 557
- Klein Moretti — black hair, brown eyes, formal attire, top hat, and a scholarly bearing. 29
- Zhou Mingrui — a young man with short black hair, deep brown eyes, an ordinary refined face, eye bags, and a slight double chin. 557
- Sherlock Moriarty — black hair and brown eyes, gold-rimmed glasses, and a mustache. 161
- Gehrman Sparrow — a severe adventurer identity used during his sea voyages and dangerous operations. 272

Personality
Klein is cautious, analytical, and reluctant to trust apparent coincidences. He repeatedly questions why his advancement, discoveries, and escapes proceed too smoothly, especially when fate or Sefirah Castle may be involved. 20 61
Despite his secrecy, he consistently acts to protect others. He remains concerned for Benson and Melissa, warns Leonard away from danger, seeks help against George III’s ritual, and commits himself to stopping the approaching world war. 39 557 585 613
His relationship with Alice draws out a more patient and exasperated side. He often acts as her adviser, guardian, and reluctant straight man, tolerating her pranks while warning her to consider their consequences. 341 472 702
