Appearance
- Normal form: Long black hair, pale skin, golden vertical pupils, and purple eyeshadow extending toward the bridge of his nose 18.
- Sage Mode: Two sharp forehead horns, white scales across exposed skin, purple markings covering both cheeks, and transparent snake-shaped streams of chakra 138.
- Eight-Headed Serpent form: A colossal snow-white monster resembling eight intertwined snakes. Orochimaru’s slime-covered body emerges from one head’s mouth with a Kusanagi Sword 75.
Personality
Orochimaru’s central ambition is to live indefinitely, learn every technique, and witness the world’s interesting developments. Political authority eventually becomes secondary to research: after losing Konoha, he declares that “Orochimaru the Hokage” is dead and refuses to resume that responsibility 80 141.
His curiosity often overrides humiliation or fear. Discovering that an eight-year-old Kagami trapped him in genjutsu first shocks him, then excites him. Even while Kagami destroys his serpent body, he continues reaching toward the Sharingan with admiration rather than despair 19 77.
He is calculating about survival. He prepares escape routes, scatters soul imprints, and treats the loss of a body as an acceptable cost. During the Ōtsutsuki conflict, he takes a single useful specimen and withdraws immediately rather than remaining for revenge 74 80 153 186.
His attachments to Hiruzen and Jiraiya persist beneath his cold behavior. He collects Hiruzen’s flesh to bring him back, does not genuinely wish to kill Jiraiya, and later teaches Konohamaru carefully partly for Hiruzen’s sake. These bonds coexist with his willingness to manipulate others and conduct human experiments 70 85 141 197.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Summoning and Reverse Summoning
Orochimaru uses snakes for combat, communication, surveillance, transport, and secure storage 19 22 36 70 153 186.
- Sends messages and gathers intelligence through summoned snakes 22 36.
- Receives images observed by a white snake 70.
- Entrusts valuable scrolls and biological samples to snakes, then dismisses them to remove the objects from the battlefield 74 153 186.
- Uses Reverse Summoning to retreat to Ryūchi Cave 186.
- Considers summoning Manda as a trump card against Kagami, but does not establish that Manda could defeat him 22.
- His apparent restraint of Kagami with a giant snake occurs inside Kagami’s illusion, not as a successful capture 19.
Eight Branches Technique
His strongest technique at the time of Konoha’s civil war transforms him into the Eight-Headed Serpent, a monster comparable in size to a Tailed Beast 75.
- Learned during an earlier infiltration of the Book of Seals repository 74.
- Regenerates destroyed serpent heads and body segments 77.
- Allows Orochimaru to emerge from a snake’s mouth and wield his sword 75.
- Regeneration has limits: sustained attacks from Kagami, Minato, and Sakumo destroy tissue faster than it can recover 77.
- The legendary serpent is associated with natural disasters, but the supplied battle passages do not show Orochimaru commanding those disasters 75.
Body Modification and Survival
Orochimaru researches cellular stimulation, replacement bodies, and soul-related techniques 36 74 153.
- Creates a chakra activation technique that stimulates cellular activity and functions as an indirect self-healing method; gives it to Kagami 36.
- Can shed his skin, which he identifies as a way to remove Minato’s Flying Thunder God marks 105.
- Scatters numerous soul imprints as safeguards against death 153.
- Survives or returns after the destruction of individual bodies; the exact return mechanism is not shown for every reappearance 77 78 173 180.
- Views Yin-Yang Release as a possible route to perfecting his immortality technique 117.
- Concludes that senjutsu alone will not grant immortality unless he abandons humanity and becomes a snake 121.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru brings dead shinobi back from the Pure Land and collaborates with the technique’s creator, Tobirama, to improve it 78 80 85.
- Initially resurrects Tobirama using a bound living ninja as a sacrifice 78.
- Later resurrects Hashirama Senju and Hiruzen Sarutobi as well 93.
- Uses Hiruzen’s recovered flesh as research material for his planned return 70.
- Requires substantial experimental resources; Tobirama requests live ninja, materials, and equipment for their improvement work 80.
- Recognizes Hashirama’s authority among the resurrected Hokage despite being their summoner 93.
Sage Mode and Sage Arts
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode enhances his chakra and changes his body into a more serpentine form 138.
- Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation: Controls water to form a massive serpent against an advancing oil tide 139.
- Sage Art: White Rage Technique: Releases a red dragon carrying a black orb; its eruption produces intense light, sound, and vibrations that impede nearby opponents 139.
- Uses snake corneas to avoid White Rage’s blinding effects 139.
- Produces numerous small chakra snakes to bombard Sasori 150.
- Begins preparing for immediate Sage Mode activation during the tournament’s second round 157.
Swordsmanship
Orochimaru combines Kusanagi-class weapons, snake-based attacks, and senjutsu-enhanced speed 3 29 75 186.
- Exploits Chiyo’s momentary hesitation over Sasori to launch a blade-like attack from his mouth and sever her arm 29.
- Fights Kagami with a Kusanagi Sword during the siege of Konoha, but loses the weapon to him 75.
- Develops Sage Art: Ama no Murakumo Strike from Slash Release research rather than successfully acquiring Slash Release itself 186.
- Uses the resulting supersonic strike to divide Urashiki’s severed lower body and obtain one leg 186.
Research and Genetic Engineering
His research encompasses bloodline abilities, Human Puppets, ocular evolution, and forbidden techniques 21 150 197.
- Examines Pakura’s Scorch Release-bearing corpse after Minato’s team returns from its mission 21.
- Attempts to capture Sasori to study Human Puppet technology 150.
- Fuses Shisui’s blood, Urashiki’s leg, and genes from an experimental subject named Shin to create a defective Rinnegan 197.
- Uses that eye in Konohamaru’s evolution, producing the third pair of “God’s Eyes” 197.
- Wants to uncover Perfect Mangekyō evolution through direct participation and eventually obtain comparable eyes himself 197.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Swords — Has collected several weapons of this class. Kagami takes one during their battle at Konoha 3 75.

- Three Snake Princesses — Ryūchi Cave associates who support his Sage Mode. He requests revocation of his successor status before their proposed confrontation with Kagami; confirmation of that revocation is not supplied 121 138.
- Konohamaru Sarutobi — Disciple taught both out of loyalty to Hiruzen and to further Orochimaru’s ocular research. Orochimaru publicly acknowledges that Konohamaru has surpassed him 195 197.
- Kakuzu — Paid research partner. Orochimaru teasingly calls him his most important employee, while Kakuzu insists they are equals 196.
- Shimura Danzō — Former Wood Release research associate. Rejects Danzō’s authority and assistance after taking the Hokage office 36 74.
- Sasori — A research target whose Human Puppet techniques interest him; their attempted confrontation is interrupted by Gyūki’s attack 150.
- Hiruko — Former friend and contemporary whose transformation shocks Orochimaru when Kagami presents him publicly 124 125.
History
Border Command and the Land of Wind Campaign
Before the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru commands Konoha’s border forces and accepts Minato, Kagami, and Kakashi as reinforcements. His interest in Kagami’s Sharingan immediately creates hostility. Kagami traps him in Mirror Flower Water Moon, prompting Orochimaru to investigate the child’s abilities more closely 18 19 22.
He threatens to report Kagami’s attack on a frontline commander, but the exchange becomes a political negotiation. Kagami threatens a mass Uchiha defection; Orochimaru instead offers to groom him as a future Hokage. The text reveals that Orochimaru never actually intended to report him and was more interested in observing his power 21.
Orochimaru plans a direct invasion of the Land of Wind to force Sunagakure’s infiltrators home. He assigns the Iwagakure jinchūriki threat to Minato and Kagami and agrees to request Uchiha reinforcements in return for Kagami holding the rear 23.
The offensive stalls because he underestimates Rasa and the Sand shinobi’s environmental advantage. He wounds Chiyo, infiltrates Sunagakure to gather intelligence and spread the truth about the Third Kazekage’s death, but eventually withdraws to his defensive line 29 38.
Fourth Hokage and the Uchiha Rebellion
After Hiruzen’s death, Orochimaru returns to Konoha, occupies the Hokage office, and prepares for war against Kagami’s clan. He assumes the Fourth Hokage position without a funeral or inauguration ceremony; Minato later describes him as an unregistered Hokage 70 71 74 80.
Expecting defeat, he nevertheless organizes shelters, recalls the village’s ninja, strengthens its barrier, and secures forbidden-technique material for his own future. He refuses to rely on Danzō as the village’s hidden enforcer 74.
During the assault, he uses the Eight Branches Technique against Kagami. Minato and Sakumo join the fight, overwhelming the serpent’s regeneration. Kagami defeats him with Susanoo, and Konoha’s remaining forces surrender 75 76 77.
Resurrection Research and Exile
Orochimaru reappears underground and resurrects Tobirama. He abandons his claim to the Hokage title, choosing research instead, while Kagami orders Minato to designate him an S-Rank missing-nin 78 80.
He and Tobirama improve Impure World Reincarnation, then bring back Hashirama and Hiruzen. Their later confrontation with Kagami reveals Orochimaru’s senjutsu training. Orochimaru correctly deduces that Kagami can see the future, expresses gratitude for its alteration, and is banned from entering the Land of Fire 85 93 104.
By the martial performance’s announcement, Orochimaru helps Tobirama and Hiruzen administer Hidden Fire Village in the Land of Wind. Their government adopts the Land of Fire’s unified military, political, and financial model 117.
Shinobi World Martial Performance
Orochimaru enters the competition seeking knowledge, initially favoring Yin-Yang Release as an aid to immortality. He later participates in the combined attack on Mahoraga and receives an additional reward, selecting the Slash Release cultivation scroll 117 150 153.
Possessing the scroll makes him a target for other competitors. He stores it away through summoning and continues despite expecting to lose another life 153.
The Chapter 173 summary attributes his death to Kagami, but the detailed passage identifies Sukuna as the killer. Jiraiya closes his eyes afterward. Orochimaru is alive again by Chapter 180; the supplied passages do not explain that return 173 180.
Ōtsutsuki Research and Konohamaru
During the Ōtsutsuki invasion, Orochimaru uses his new sword technique to secure Urashiki’s leg and immediately retreats to Ryūchi Cave. The specimen later becomes part of his ocular research 186 197.
He takes Konohamaru as a disciple and eventually declares that the boy has surpassed him. Working with Kakuzu, he supports Konohamaru’s transformation and incorporates an engineered defective Rinnegan into the process, witnessing the birth of the third pair of God’s Eyes 195 196 197.
His intellectual influence also outlasts his time in Konoha’s government: Shisui and Sasuke later discuss his political and economic theories while preparing for leadership 177.

Trivia
- Dislikes cold food; eats a still-warm boiled egg during a break from laboratory work 85.
- Although fascinated by powerful dōjutsu, he considers ordinary Sharingan and the Byakugan insufficiently valuable to justify elaborate theft attempts 142.
- Regards Shisui as a more manageable potential body than the increasingly evolved Kagami, but understands that harming Shisui would provoke Kagami into pursuing every fragment of his soul 171.
