Background

Kakashi entered the Ninja Academy in Konoha Year 41 as a student representative. He was already recognizable for his bored demeanor and “dead-fish” eyes. Obito Uchiha warned him that Uchiha Kagami had entered the Academy intending to target him, though Kakashi initially dismissed Obito's concern. 1

Kagami became Kakashi's defining early rival. Kakashi held his own in their first combat exchange, but Kagami later overwhelmed his Earth Release defenses and incapacitated him with Sharingan genjutsu. The defeat led Kakashi to postpone early graduation and intensify his training. He asked his father, Sakumo Hatake, to teach him Hatake swordsmanship. 3 4 5

When Sakumo was condemned for abandoning a mission to save comrades, Kakashi was torn between duty and loyalty. Kagami's warning that Sakumo might take his own life drove Kakashi to confront his father. Kakashi initially presents himself as detached, easily irritated, and bored by Academy exercises—particularly when paired with Obito or Might Gai. In combat, however, he is calm, efficient, and serious. 1 3 46

His losses shape his later conduct. Obito's reported death leaves him emotionally devastated, while Rin's death at his own hand drives him to pursue Obito despite the risk.
