Background / History

When Pangu transformed into all things after opening heaven and earth, his Primordial Spirit divided into three and merged with the clear qi, flying to Kunlun Mountain. Laozi was born from one of these portions alongside Yuanshi and Tongtian. His fundamental form reflects Pangu's elder period, appearing as an old man when his Primordial Spirit materializes. 12 38

Taichu later entered the Three Pure Ones' nurturing ground and remolded their origins with the Heart of Creation, Pangu's origin, and the Five Elements Sacred Fruit. After 30,000 years, Laozi's Primordial Spirit awakened first and addressed Taichu as Eldest Brother. 38

As the eldest brother, Laozi received Taichu's guidance, inherited the Nine Revolutions Primordial Technique, and pledged with Yuanshi and Tongtian not to fail Pangu or Taichu's expectations. Taichu later gave him the Yin Yang Cauldron and, subsequently, the Taiji Diagram. 39 40 89

Laozi ultimately chose to inherit Pangu's will by enlightening living beings. He established the Human Teachings among the Human Race, developed the Golden Elixir Dao for them, and became a Heaven and Earth Saint. 473 474

Appearance

Laozi's manifested Primordial Spirit takes the form of a little old man. In later appearances, he is described as silver-haired, dressed in a Yin-Yang Daoist robe, and carrying a dust whisk. 38 187

Personality

Laozi is the most rational and composed of the Three Pure Ones. Taichu considers him suited to cultivate Supreme Forgetfulness and to guide the Myriad Spirits, while Laozi's own insight lets him perceive the wider purpose behind the awakening of the Heaven, Earth, and Man Three Daos. 118 130

He is restrained rather than detached. He warns Tongtian not to demand more from spiritual roots than their limits permit, yet he accepts responsibility for enlightening the Primordial World and devises cultivation paths for people of differing aptitudes. 85 474

As eldest brother, Laozi regularly guides Yuanshi and Tongtian. After Taichu purifies the hidden danger in his Primordial Spirit, Laozi recognizes his past errors, seeks forgiveness, and asks Taichu to save his brothers as well. 75 447
