Background / History
Tom grows up at Woods Orphanage under Mrs. Cole. He approaches Li Weide as another child with unusual powers, but Li Weide defeats him when he attacks. Tom subsequently acts obedient while privately seeking a chance to retaliate. When Dumbledore visits to invite them to Hogwarts, he confronts Tom about theft and his use of magic against other children 2 4 9 10.
At school, Tom’s desire to grow stronger drives him toward spell study and Dark Magic. His rivalry with Li Weide gradually becomes a friendship, though he remains wary of Li Weide’s schemes and resents being overshadowed. Li Weide teaches him magic, pushes him into difficult fights, and later entrusts him with Hydra’s organizational plans 25 94 196 212 364.
Tom’s contact with the Riddle family changes his priorities. After an attack leaves his father, Old Tom, near death, Tom discovers how much strength he can draw from wanting to protect him. Their subsequent conversations and practice sessions lead Tom to focus less on acquiring powerful spells and more on defensive skill and the judgment of the caster 179 186 187 189.
Li Weide eventually shows Tom the Voldemort he might have become. Horrified, Tom rejects that future and casts his Patronus as evidence of the path he has taken instead. He later graduates early from Hogwarts, handing the Mutual Aid Club’s affairs to Annie and others before continuing his training with Li Weide 547 555.

Tom is described as a handsome boy with hollow cheeks. Venom from a mutated Tentacula later damages part of his hair, prompting him to shave his head 4 9 171.

Tom is ambitious, proud, and intensely protective of his life. His experiences make him more willing to examine his own conduct. He grows close to his father, learns to control his impulsiveness, and eventually says he no longer uses Dark Magic. That change does not erase his appetite for strength or the competitive banter that defines much of his friendship with Li Weide 186 403 502.
