Background
Tom grew up at Woods Orphanage, where he believed his ability to move objects, command animals, and hurt people set him apart from everyone else. He approached Li Weide seeking a partnership founded on fear and their shared telekinetic talent, but Li decisively overpowered him and left him frightened of provoking him again 2.
Dumbledore later identified Tom as a wizard and invited him to Hogwarts. Tom eagerly embraced magic as the means to become stronger, though he remained hostile, distrustful, and intent on mastering power quickly 9 10. At Hogwarts, he proved himself against older Slytherin students, defeating Abraxas Malfoy and several allies before Li Weide protected him from a final attack 69.
Tom learned that he was the son of Merope Gaunt and Tom Riddle Sr. He initially struggled with his Muggle heritage, but confronted Morfin Gaunt, defeated him for the Gaunt ring, and rejected Morfin's degraded claim to Slytherin's legacy. Rather than kill or ruin him, Tom left Morfin five hundred Galleons 122 124.
After witnessing his father tortured by Dark Wizards, Tom used Sectumsempra, Fiery Blast, and the Killing Curse to rescue him. The incident began a difficult reconciliation with his father and gave Tom a personal reason to grow stronger 177 179. His understanding of magic shifted further after recognizing that Dumbledore's superiority came from mastery rather than Dark Magic alone; he began focusing on defensive spellwork, speed, and reactions 187.
Appearance
Tom is a thin young boy with hollow cheeks and pitch-black eyes; his eyes can appear crimson when he is angry 2 9.
- Has a strong resemblance to his future counterpart, Voldemort, as a young man 548 550.
- His appearance and magical resemblance to Voldemort cause elderly Dumbledore to mistake him for the resurrected Dark Lord in the parallel world 549 550.
Personality
Tom is proud, ambitious, highly competitive, and intensely conscious of power. In his early years, he believes fear is the proper basis for control and reacts badly to humiliation, but he also admires people demonstrably stronger than himself—particularly Li Weide 2 42.
Despite his arrogance, Tom is not fearless. He is strongly attached to his own survival, becomes anxious when facing overwhelming dangers, and frequently overthinks risks. Li Weide repeatedly pushes him to confront this fear rather than retreat from it 230 417 523.
His encounters with his father, Dumbledore, and Slytherin's hidden legacy reshape his values. Tom comes to reject the cruelty embedded in Slytherin's Dark Magic trials, recognizes love as a source of magical strength, and ultimately judges himself by the choices he makes rather than his bloodline or potential future 180 215 547.
Abilities & Skills
Magical Aptitude
Tom is an exceptionally gifted wizard with a rapid learning ability. By his later Hogwarts years, ordinary classes no longer challenge him, and he studies Ancient Magic and advanced theory directly under Slytherin 406.
- Defeated Abraxas Malfoy and multiple older students as a first-year, using disarming, blinding, Stunning, and Bat-Bogey magic 69.
- Developed enough skill to create a Muggle-Repelling Charm around his private house in the woods at age twelve 226.
- Cleared Grindelwald's combat stages through tactical use of Transfiguration, flashbangs, and environmental awareness rather than brute force 297.
- After receiving Pure Magic Power from Li Weide, could cast previously demanding spells casually; Li estimated his capability at Elite Auror level 386.
- Absorbed Voldemort's magic after killing him, becoming stronger at the cost of an estimated ten to twenty years of lifespan 556.
Patronus Charm
Tom is an unusual Slytherin heir capable of casting the Patronus Charm, a feat with no known precedent among Slytherin's descendants 226.
- Initially produced a blurry, formless Patronus 225.
- Later manifested a Hydra Patronus, described as a nine-headed white serpent 386 547.
- Can incorporate Patronus magic into wind, allowing joyful magic to disrupt Voldemort's corrosive black mist 549.
- His Patronus serves as proof that he has diverged from Voldemort's path 547.
Parseltongue
As Slytherin's descendant, Tom can speak Parseltongue.
- Opened the hidden entrance to Slytherin's Secret Chamber for Li Weide 209.
- Opened the final door to the Basilisk's lair beneath Hogwarts 230.
Dark Magic and Counter-Dark Magic
Tom initially pursued Dark Magic as the strongest form of magic, studying dangerous spells from the Restricted Section and Slytherin's materials. He later rejects Slytherin's legacy and ceases using Dark Magic as his primary path 94 215 502.
- Cast Sectumsempra to disarm Morfin Gaunt while rescuing his father 177.
- Used Fiery Blast and Avada Kedavra against attacking Dark Wizards 177.
- Experienced the Cruciatus Curse during Slytherin's trials and became disgusted with the legacy's methods 215.
- Chose to study defensive magic, casting speed, and reaction time after learning from Dumbledore's defeat of Grindelwald 187.
Transfiguration and Combat Tactics
Tom combines conventional spellcasting with improvised combat methods.
- Performed a complex Transfiguration that produced a unique flower after realizing the connection between love and magic 180.
- Transfigured shattered earth into animated knights while fighting Voldemort 549.
- Used a longsword, revolver, flight magic, and spell combinations against Voldemort rather than relying solely on dueling spells 549.
- Fought Voldemort long enough to wound and force him to flee 549.
Equipment
- Yew wand — Tom's personal wand, used to cast his Patronus and duel Voldemort 547.
- Hogyoku — Alchemical tool supplied by Li Weide; its magical power allowed Tom to block a barrage of Death Eater spells without drawing his wand 548.
- Longswords — Used during his battle with Voldemort; Tom treats them carefully despite Li Weide having made numerous replacements 549.
- Revolver — Used to wound Voldemort after Tom combined conventional weapons with magic 549.
- Snakewood wand — Slytherin's wand, temporarily passed to Tom before he returned it because he no longer wished to use Dark Magic 502.
Relationships
- Li Weide — First friend, rival, manipulative mentor, and frequent source of intimidation. Li repeatedly restrains Tom's worst impulses while pushing him toward strength and responsibility; Tom ultimately recognizes that Li's presence changed his fate 2 403 547.
- Albus Dumbledore — Professor and early guide. Dumbledore recognizes Tom's talent, worries about his safety and attraction to Dark Magic, and helps him develop a healthier understanding of magic 9 187 226.
- Tom Riddle Sr. — Father. Tom initially resents and distrusts him, then risks his life to save him from Morfin and Dark Wizards; their relationship develops through shared study and spell practice 124 177 187.
- Merope Gaunt — Mother. Her use of a love potion on Tom Riddle Sr. and death after Tom's birth shape Tom's conflicted view of his origins 124.
- Morfin Gaunt — Maternal uncle. Tom defeats Morfin to claim the Gaunt ring and later disowns him from the dignity of Slytherin's heirs while leaving him money 122.
- Salazar Slytherin — Ancestor and later teacher. Tom explores his inheritance but rejects Slytherin's Dark Magic, eventually returning Slytherin's wand because it no longer suits him 215 406 502.
- Gellert Grindelwald — Powerful elder who admires Tom's talent and attempts to draw him closer. Tom is initially intimidated by him but agrees to confront him to strengthen his resolve 208 207.
- Voldemort — Tom's potential future self from a parallel world. Seeing Voldemort's mutilated appearance, crimes, and hatred horrifies Tom; he later duels, defeats, and kills him 546 547 556.
