Background / History
Xiang Yang was born in Anyuan County, Qingjiang Prefecture. His mother died giving birth to him, leaving him to be raised solely by his father, the minor constable Xiang Da Niu. After Xiang Da Niu was killed while fighting bandits, the fifteen-year-old Xiang Yang inherited his father’s constable position and was left without blood relatives 1.
The body’s original owner was replaced by the soul of a young shut-in from Earth after the latter’s blood touched a blank white paper. The paper became the Wordless Book, assigning missions and granting martial arts, cultivation, and other rewards. Xiang Yang immediately treated avenging Xiang Da Niu as both a filial obligation and a personal objective 1 2.
He discovered that Big Saber Hu Qiang had killed his father on another person’s orders. Xiang Yang infiltrated the Black Wind Mountain Stronghold, captured and tortured Hu Qiang for information, then executed him after learning of possible links to Wang Ying, Steward Fang, and Qian Fu 26 27. He later cooperated with Sun Tao to kill Qian Fu, one of the figures implicated in his father’s murder 74 677.
Xiang Yang’s rapid growth drew the attention of the Divine Constable Gate. He entered its Qingjiang Prefecture branch, undertook increasingly dangerous missions, and gained a reputation as an exceptionally young blade master. His activities later extended through Yongzhou, Yanxi Commandery, Kanzhou, Shenzhou, and beyond 169 273 503.
At different points in his journey, Xiang Yang inhabits other bodies, including Xiang Ji’s and Xiang Zhao’s. He uses these circumstances to acquire martial arts, build influence, and continue pursuing the Martial Path while concealing or reshaping his identity 330 535 738.
Appearance
Xiang Yang was initially a delicate, handsome youth with red lips, white teeth, fair skin, and distinctive phoenix eyes. His appearance changes repeatedly through body tempering, Bone-Marrow Cleansing, Heavenly Silkworm transformations, disguises, and possession-related events 1 237 419.
- Initially appears frail in mourning clothes despite his underlying resolve 1.
- Grows to nearly 1.8 meters during adolescence and becomes broad-shouldered, strong, and imposing 237.
- His eyes develop a sharp, blade-like quality through cultivation and combat experience 237 508.
- Later physical transformations make his features more rugged and his body more muscular 419.
- Has used golden hair, black hair, Human Skin Masks, altered bones, and monk disguises to conceal his identity 276 641 664 688.
- After enduring Dragon Demon True Fire, sheds burned skin and regrows smooth skin and hair through blood-essence control 899.
Personality
Xiang Yang is fundamentally self-interested, practical, and highly aware of risk. He does not view himself as a selfless hero, openly acknowledging that he weighs benefits, danger, and personal satisfaction before acting 34 477.
His early successes make him arrogant, but a near-fatal encounter forces him to accept that the martial world is real, dangerous, and unforgiving. From then on, he becomes more cautious, composed, and willing to retreat when a conflict offers little value 74 117.
Despite his ruthlessness, Xiang Yang has firm personal principles. He protects people who have shown him kindness, opposes cruelty toward ordinary people when he has the power to intervene, and repays debts of gratitude. His aid to the Yu family is driven by both justice and the spiritual satisfaction he gains from acting according to his own will 472 477 478.
He is intensely devoted to martial arts and values freedom over status or factional control. He repeatedly rejects recruitment by powerful families and leaders, preferring to pursue his own Martial Path rather than serve as another person’s subordinate 445 592 1025.
