Background

Nan Fenglan is the only daughter of Grand General Nan Kai, a renowned military commander and First-Class Marquis. In her youth, her prominent upbringing, beauty, refined bearing, and martial talent earned her the title “Pearl of the Imperial Capital.” Emperor Shengwu had reportedly heard of her and sought to bring her into the palace. 1058 1059

Originally disciplined and devoted to martial arts, Nan Fenglan was deceived by a powerful, charming member of the Demonic Sect who cultivated her interest in martial arts to win her trust. She became pregnant, but he refused to acknowledge their child. Nan Kai forced her to abort the pregnancy; the resulting conflict ended with Nan Fenglan leaving the General’s residence and joining the Divine Constable Gate. 1059

She rose through the Divine Constable Gate to become a Purple Robe Chief Constable, but her conduct changed drastically. Her pursuit of powerful men—particularly Purple Robe constables—gave her a notorious socialite reputation. In reality, she used these relationships to obtain intelligence, cultivate influence, and search for a way to kill the man who had betrayed her. 1028 1036

Appearance

Nan Fenglan is a tall, shapely woman whose exceptional appearance once made her the most celebrated young lady of the Imperial Capital. Her resemblance in face, figure, and temperament to Nan Xiaoru immediately unsettles Xiang Yang. 1028 1035

  • Exquisite, makeup-free melon-seed face. 1035
  • Clear, captivating eyes; a delicate nose; fair, supple skin. 1035
  • Long black hair and slender, jade-like hands. 1035 1058
  • Tall, graceful build and an elegant, mature bearing. 1035
  • Her beauty and notoriety within the Divine Constable Gate lead to her being called the “Dangerous Rose.” 1035

Personality

Nan Fenglan is intelligent, observant, and willing to act decisively. Her intelligence work and deductions during the Wen Family Fortress investigation prove valuable to Xiang Yang, while her resolve repeatedly drives her into dangerous situations for those she cares about. 1036 1047 1058

Her temperament is volatile. She can be gentle, playful, and openly affectionate, but becomes intensely vindictive when insulted or confronted with injustice. In Lianchuan City, she binds a group of harassers with True Qi chains and nearly kills them; later, she cripples martial artists who harass another woman. 1038 1039

For much of her life, Nan Fenglan is defined by guilt, self-loathing, and hatred for the Human Demon Sect Master. Her affection for Xiang Yang begins partly from his resemblance to the idealized safety and compassion she had lost, but becomes genuine love. Although Xiang Yang cannot return her feelings, his friendship and protection help her regain clarity, reconcile with her father, and pursue revenge without surrendering herself to despair. 1054 1060 1073 1205

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts Cultivation

Nan Fenglan is an accomplished Heavenly Man martial artist before reaching Dao attainment. Her early cultivation is formidable enough to place her among the Divine Constable Gate’s Purple Robes, though her foundation is weaker than that of the Human Demon Sect Master. 1035 1206

  • Achieves Dao attainment through the growth of her Primordial Spirit and her prolonged connection to Xiang Yang’s wooden sword. 1205
  • Develops a sharp, fearless Blade Intent after attaining Dao. 1206
  • Gains the spiritual insight needed to approach the Spiritual Divine Treasury after killing her former husband. 1209

Cloud-Brushing Jade-Shattering Hand

A secret palm art not kept within the Divine Constable Gate. Nan Fenglan uses it in her first direct confrontation with Xiang Yang. 1035

  • Her palm force is soft and cloudlike in appearance but carries rapid, complex changes. 1035
  • The attack creates a hurricane-like impact when aimed at Xiang Yang’s chest. 1035
  • It cannot penetrate Xiang Yang’s protective Gang Qi after his Dao attainment. 1035

True Qi Chains

Nan Fenglan can manifest chains of True Qi from her palm to restrain opponents. 1038

  • Produces seven illusory chains capable of binding multiple targets simultaneously. 1038
  • The chains tighten around targets and pierce their Dantian and Qi Sea, making resistance difficult even for Postnatal Great Accomplishment martial artists. 1038
  • She can disperse the chains at will, as she does after Xiang Yang orders her to stand down. 1039

Blade Arts and Controlled by the Blade

After attaining Dao, Nan Fenglan wields Xiang Yang’s wooden sword in battle against the Human Demon Sect Master. Her own cultivation provides part of the power, while the sword supplies Xiang Yang’s perfected Martial Path and combat instincts. 1207 1208

  • Uses the sword to break sonic attacks, fists, palms, claws, and ice-fire demonic arts. 1207
  • Employs sword shadows, protective energy shields, aerial movement, and rapid consecutive slashes beyond her original level of technique. 1208
  • “Controlled by the Blade” allows the sword to fight as an external manifestation of Xiang Yang rather than solely through Nan Fenglan’s own skill. 1208
  • The sword’s contribution is estimated at seventy percent of her combat effectiveness in the duel; without Dao attainment, she could only use it defensively. 1208

Equipment

  • Wooden Sword — A blade carved by Xiang Yang from Dragon Heart Cypress and infused with his Essence, Qi, Spirit, and blood through the Myriad Manifestation Divine Skill of Self-Liberation. 1147
    • Carries a sword-form external manifestation of Xiang Yang with approximately ninety percent of his main body’s combat power. 1207
    • Absorbs the Essence, Qi, Spirit, and blood of powerful enemies it kills, strengthening itself in the process. 1147 1209
    • Serves as Nan Fenglan’s emotional anchor and supports her cultivation after she returns to the Nan residence. 1205

Relationships

  • Xiang Yang — Superior, ally, confidant, and the object of Nan Fenglan’s unrequited love. She joins his ranks to seek his aid and later receives his promise that he will help her kill the Human Demon Sect Master. 1036 1054 1060
  • Nan Kai — Her father, the Grand General. They become estranged after he forces her abortion and disowns her, but reconcile when she returns to warn him of the Demonic Sect’s plot. 1059 1205
  • Human Demon Sect Master — Former lover and husband who deceived Nan Fenglan, rejected their child, and becomes the target of her lifelong revenge. She ultimately kills him with Xiang Yang’s wooden sword. 1060 1209
  • Huang Shaoxiong — Fellow Divine Constable Gate martial artist and Xiang Yang’s subordinate. He accompanies Nan Fenglan during the Dingzhou investigation and is concerned by her pursuit of Xiang Yang. 1038 1039
  • Ning KeXiang Yang’s beloved. Nan Fenglan recognizes Ning Ke’s beauty, resilience, and importance to Xiang Yang, causing her deep pain over her own unreturned feelings. 1096 1115

Story Role / Major Arcs

Encounter with Xiang Yang

Nan Fenglan first meets Xiang Yang while accompanying Wu Qinglie. Her resemblance to Nan Xiaoru stirs Xiang Yang’s unresolved memories, while his intense reaction unsettles her and causes her to flee. 1027 1028

She later blocks Xiang Yang’s path to Cloud Piercer Peak and attacks him with the Cloud-Brushing Jade-Shattering Hand. When he calmly deflects her strike without harming her, she identifies him as her chance to obtain revenge and asks to serve under him. 1035 1036

Wen Family Fortress Investigation

Nan Fenglan accompanies Xiang Yang and Huang Shaoxiong to Dingzhou to investigate the Wen Family Fortress massacre. She provides intelligence on Zhou Tong and the Bai Family, assists with covert observation at the Bai Family banquet, and helps trace Wen Jingjing’s connection to Lady Ruyu. 1036 1042 1047

After Xiang Yang assigns her to investigate Lingya Mountain, she fails to infiltrate the Bai Family’s guarded perimeter but returns with useful information regarding Bai Tianming and Bai Miaoqin. 1055 1058

Confession and Promise

Nan Fenglan confesses her love to Xiang Yang, offering to support his choices and abandon everything for him. Xiang Yang gently avoids reciprocating, explaining later that his feelings for her are friendship and that he already loves Ning Ke. 1054 1060

She reveals the truth of her past and begs Xiang Yang to help her kill the Human Demon Sect Master. Xiang Yang agrees, regarding the sect master’s death as justified and asking Nan Fenglan to live for herself once her hatred is resolved. 1059 1060

Demonic Sect Coercion

The Human Demon Sect Master threatens Nan Fenglan through her father’s seal and sends Di Jiang to pressure her into making Xiang Yang consume an unknown medicine. She conceals the threat from Xiang Yang out of fear for Nan Kai’s safety. 1134

Xiang Yang learns of the plot, kills Di Jiang and the Tiger King, and reassures Nan Fenglan that he will not punish her. Though their relationship becomes strained by her secrecy, he helps her assess the danger to her father and crafts the wooden sword for her protection. 1145 1146 1147

Revenge against the Human Demon Sect Master

Nan Fenglan reconciles with Nan Kai, exposes Demonic Sect spies in the Nan residence, and independently attains Dao through her cultivation with the wooden sword. She then arranges a final meeting with the Human Demon Sect Master on the mountain where they had first met. 1205

Despite the vast gap between their personal strength, Nan Fenglan uses the wooden sword’s “Controlled by the Blade” state to match him in combat. The sword absorbs his blood and qi, fatally weakening him; Nan Fenglan ends his life, buries his body, and gains spiritual growth from finally resolving her hatred. 1207 1208 1209
