Background / History

Eighth Peak and the Recruitment of Zheng Fa

Pang leads the Nine Mountains Sect’s Eighth Peak lineage, whose foundational inheritance is the Void-Piercing Spirit Eye. His branch competes with Senior Sister Zhang’s lineage, which is distinguished by the Talisman Dao Foundation Establishment Method 121 126.

His early wager has more than one purpose: Sun Daoyu explains that Pang wants Zhou Ganyuan to learn humility and hopes studying the Spirit Eye will persuade Zhang to accept his Infinite Origin Talisman philosophy. Because the technique requires Millennium Purple Bamboo Tears, Pang also expects Zhang to exchange her Foundation Establishment method for the necessary material 78 103.

Pang repeatedly attempts to recruit Zheng Fa, offering personal instruction and resources sufficient to support eventual Nascent Soul formation. Zheng Fa refuses out of loyalty to Zhang’s lineage and instead becomes Sect Leader Yuan’s disciple. Pang nevertheless gives him Millennium Purple Bamboo Tears, recognizing that Yuan’s fiercely protective temperament makes reclaiming the new disciple impractical 113 115 118 120.

When Zheng Fa later brings him the Talisman Dao Foundation Establishment Method, Pang acknowledges the political support behind him. He sends Zhou Ganyuan to follow Zheng Fa, both endorsing the Sect Leader Disciple and removing Zhou from the hostility of fellow Eighth Peak disciples 126.

Thunder Pool Expedition

Pang personally leads the expedition to Thunder Pool to search for the missing Zhang Wuyi, investigate the Heavenly Stele, and establish a new marketplace. He deliberately takes a lengthy route near allied sects to reduce the risk of Demonic Sect ambushes 160.

During the journey, he receives True Person Ling Chengfeng with elaborate courtesy. When Ling disparages Zhang, Pang defends her without turning their disagreement into an open confrontation. He counters Ling’s boasting by pointing to the rapid advancement of a disciple Zhang recruited 160.

Pang and Zheng Fa establish Thunder Pool Market. Pang also investigates the pool himself, supplies detailed intelligence, and worries that Zheng Fa’s determination to rescue Zhang may endanger his own cultivation path 162 164 165 177.

The search brings Pang face-to-face with his former disciple Chen Ting. Pang condemns Chen’s betrayal and killings, but Chen escapes while the Thunder Pool restricts Pang’s strength. Pang subsequently warns Zheng Fa that Chen possesses the strengths of three cultivation lineages and must not be underestimated 167 168.

Battle Against the Great Freedom Demon Cult

Pang is left fighting four Nascent Soul opponents alone when the cultivators he invited as helpers prove treacherous. He deploys his Linked Talisman Technique and detonates portions of the Five-Dragon Heavenly Palace to break their pressure, killing Red Serpent Immortal despite the damage to himself and his life-bound treasure 183.

The Thousand Carnage Sword Immortal’s Bone Sword mortally wounds him. Old Han intervenes and saves his life; afterward, Pang learns that Zheng Fa has already paid for the rescue through an agreement with Yan Wushuang 182 183 184.

Preserving the Sect

After learning that the Spirit Transformation-level Azure Cloud Great Sage may attack the Nine Mountains Sect, Pang seeks assistance from Venerable Tongming and resolves to return to the endangered sect. Before departing, he entrusts his branch’s disciples to Zheng Fa and tells them to abandon their rivalry with Zhang’s branch 223.

His subsequent letter reports that Tongming will send a Spirit Treasure to aid the sect. Pang later remains with Sect Leader Yuan as Blood River Ancestor traps the Nine Mountains Sect behind its defenses 241 246 248.

Following the crisis, Pang receives several thousand returning disciples while Aunt-Master Huang brings their relatives and associates. He admits that Zheng Fa and Zhang have surpassed his expectations, though their success also sharpens his frustration over lacking an equally outstanding successor 260 268.

Laboratory Work and Educational Reform

Pang embraces Zheng Fa’s research program, recognizing that the Microscopic Formation can extend the usefulness of his Spirit Eye. Zheng Fa appoints him a Taishang Elder and laboratory supervisor, valuing both his observational abilities and his capacity to safeguard secrets 278 280 286.

He adds the Linked Talisman Method to the sect’s teaching syllabus and volunteers for Golden Core Engineering. His precision becomes particularly important in External Core experiments, where he coordinates the timing of the participating cultivators 277 305.

By studying one another’s formerly separate secret arts, Pang and Old Yuan jointly create the Immortal Formation Method. Pang later continues refining its industrial applications through the Nine Mountains Forum 328 404.

Pang also participates in the Pure Tranquility Bamboo research program. Its successful cell cultivation delights him, and he repeatedly visits the growing bamboo because of the protection it may provide the sect 346 347 352.

Administration and Later Research

Pang uses his contacts and surveillance skills to publicize Golden Core Engineering and attract influential buyers to the Nine Mountains auction. As the sect’s reputation rises, he becomes a principal contact for outsiders trying to understand its policies 321 378.

His conservatism remains a source of disagreement. He openly opposes Zheng Fa’s later reforms concerning the Hundred Immortals Alliance, farmland taxes, and powerful lineages, although Zheng Fa and Zhang recognize that his objection comes from concern for the sect rather than personal clan interests 484.

When the sect faces financial difficulties, Pang leads several hundred disciples in an eight-year survey of the Underworld. After finding no ordinary spiritual resources, he deploys a puppet into the lethal Weak Water and discovers that it is producing spirit stones 631.

After undergoing Corpse Liberation, Pang helps create the Eye of the Void, an artifact derived from his Spirit Eye technique and Zhang’s telescope concept. Its replaceable components allow it to surpass his own eyes 653.

Appearance

  • Earlier build: Somewhat plump 631.
  • Underworld survey: Becomes weather-beaten and gaunt after years of mentally exhausting work; his hands and feet are cold 631.
  • Spirit Eye activation: Silver light flickers or turns in his eyes 631.

Personality

Pang is cautious, diplomatic, and skilled at navigating personal relationships. He willingly sacrifices travel time for safety and flatters cultivators he privately considers unimpressive because maintaining goodwill may prevent future trouble 160. Aunt-Master Huang calls him a “sly old fox,” while also acknowledging that he treats his disciples well 268.

His caution does not prevent self-sacrifice. When cornered, he fights with a willingness to destroy his own life-bound treasure; when the sect faces possible annihilation, he returns to danger and places its future above the rivalry between branches 183 223. During the Underworld survey, he endures the same hardships as his disciples rather than directing them from safety 631.

Pang wants an exceptional successor and is frequently jealous of Old Yuan’s relationship with Zheng Fa. That anxiety sometimes damages his bond with Zhou Ganyuan, but he later questions his own fairness and allows Zhou to seek advancement under Zheng Fa rather than obstructing him 260 311 319 453.

He is conservative about institutional change but enthusiastic about useful research. He accepts laboratory work, shares his signature technique, and becomes absorbed in microscopic observation. His lighter side appears in illusion games and storybooks: he plays against disciples with his strength sealed, accepts losses without scolding them, and readily pays to continue an engrossing story 164 277 280 448.

Abilities & Skills

Void-Piercing Spirit Eye

Also rendered as Insightful Spirit Eyes, this technique is the foundational inheritance of Pang’s lineage 121.

  • Observes changes in Five Elements spiritual qi, allowing precise timing of linked talismans 183.
  • Reveals unusual spiritual-energy attributes around Thunder Pool 165.
  • Combines with the Microscopic Formation to examine spiritual materials, Dharma Treasures, and Spirit Plants 280.
  • Supports surveillance of visitors and protection of confidential laboratories 286 321.
  • Its cultivation requires Millennium Purple Bamboo Tears 103.

Linked Talisman Method

Pang’s signature technique strengthens spirit talismans through the mutual generation of the Five Elements. Its effectiveness depends on selecting the correct activation sequence and timing 183 249.

  • Combines Cloud and Rain, Wind Summoning, and Thunder Fire Talismans so that thunder benefits from rain and fire from wind 183.
  • Trains the timing skills Pang later applies to coordinated External Core experiments 305.
  • Becomes a formal course requiring Golden Core cultivation and an Excellent or higher Talisman Arts result 277.
  • Provides a model for coordinated industrial production 404.

Immortal Formation Method

Pang co-creates this method with Old Yuan by combining the Linked Talisman Technique and Talisman-Array Method, both derived from the Mountain-River True-Form Talisman 328.

  • Uses cultivators casting spells instead of relying solely on spirit talismans.
  • Allows participants to cast at different times, incorporating Pang’s sequencing expertise.
  • Addresses the difficulty of precisely controlling powerful talisman arrays with one cultivator’s Divine Soul 328.

Diplomacy and Intelligence

  • Builds goodwill through banquets, courtesy, and extensive personal connections 160 249.
  • Identifies useful social links between visitors and Hundred Immortals Alliance disciples 321.
  • Spreads targeted information about Golden Core Engineering to draw powerful auction buyers 321.
  • Serves as a major outside contact for the Nine Mountains Sect 378.

Experimental Observation and Resource Surveying

  • Oversees laboratory research and secrecy 286.
  • Coordinates tightly timed experiments through his eyesight and talisman experience 305.
  • Uses remote observation rather than entering lethal environments personally 631.
  • Helps turn a bodily divine ability into an artifact that can be repeatedly upgraded 653.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Five-Dragon Heavenly Palace — His life-bound Dharma Treasure, a flying palace carried through golden clouds by five dragon forms. Refined in his early years from flood-dragon essences, it serves as transport, lodging, and a defensive platform. He detonates its dragon components during the Thunder Pool battle; the palace is badly damaged but appears in use again afterward 160 183 184 223 543.
  • Millennium Purple Bamboo and its Tears — Cultivation resources associated with his Spirit Eye inheritance. He supplies Tears to Zheng Fa, but later reports that his bamboo has difficulty adapting to the Nine Mountains Realm’s environment 120 121 278.
  • Seal — Weakens Chen Ting’s treasure mirror during their confrontation in Thunder Pool 168.
  • Weak Water survey puppet — A preliminary research device incorporating Celestial River flying-sword techniques, artifact-refining methods, and Old Han’s Ten Directions All-Hearing. It transmits images from Weak Water, but Pang cannot control it once it enters and can only watch it sink 631.
  • Eye of the Void — An artifact developed from the Spirit Eye technique and Zhang’s telescope concept. Its first reliable version uses the Primordial Dharma Body; component replacement and re-refinement eventually make it more powerful than Pang’s own eyes 653.

Relationships

  • Zheng Fa — Martial nephew, unsuccessful recruitment target, and later Sect Leader. Pang becomes a trusted protector, researcher, and administrator under him; Zheng Fa arranges his rescue at Thunder Pool 118 182 184 286.
  • Old Yuan / Sect Leader Yuan — Senior brother and frequent target of Pang’s jealousy. Despite their verbal sparring, they jointly develop the Immortal Formation Method 120 204 328 461.
  • Zhang Wuyi — Initially a rival in sect philosophy and lineage politics. Pang later defends her reputation, pursues her rescue, and cooperates closely with her research 78 118 160 177 280 653.
  • Aunt-Master Huang — Fellow elder and long-standing opponent; they have known each other for several millennia and been at odds for over a thousand years. Their concern for the sect and exasperation with Yuan increasingly bring them together 268 435 441.
  • Huang’s late husband — Pang’s closest friend, whom he regarded as the previous generation’s most gifted true disciple. His death while rescuing Huang informs Pang’s concern about Zheng Fa risking his Dao path for Zhang 177.
  • Sun Daoyu — Disciple and frequent aide who accompanies Pang in discussions, journeys, and crises 113 126 160 183.
  • Zhou Ganyuan — Favored disciple. Pang secures resources for him, sends him to follow Zheng Fa, and eventually permits him to seek admission under Zheng Fa despite his own mixed feelings 103 126 319 453.
  • Chen Ting — Former disciple whose betrayal leaves Pang disappointed and regretful. Pang retains complicated feelings toward him but treats him as a dangerous opponent 153 168.
  • Old Han — Saves Pang’s life. Later competes with him over the possibility of accepting Zheng Shan as a disciple 184 319.
  • Zheng Shan — Zheng Fa’s younger sister, whom Pang hopes to accept as a disciple; no completed acceptance is documented 268 319.
  • Venerable Tongming — Alliance expert Pang trusts enough to approach for emergency assistance 223 241.
  • Shuyu Dragon Lord — Initially underestimates Pang because of his caution and comparatively low cultivation. His account of the disciples patiently transforming their land causes her to reassess him 543.
  • Yan Changge — Provides local knowledge during the Underworld survey and warns Pang about Weak Water’s lethal properties 631.
