Background / History

Sun Wukong began life as an unnamed ape and the Handsome Monkey King of Water Curtain Cave on Flower and Fruit Mountain. Seeking immortality for himself and his Monkey Offspring, he ventured out to sea and was carried by a storm to Huang Tian Immortal Estate. 393

Huang Tian offered him a choice between direct immortality without power and a cultivation method with uncertain results. Sun Wukong chose cultivation, pawning Flower and Fruit Mountain for one hundred years in exchange for the Heaven-Reaching Profound Technique. Huang Tian then bestowed the name Sun Wukong and taught him literacy so that he could sign the Pawn Document. 393 394

After Huang Tian collected Flower and Fruit Mountain, Sun Wukong cultivated alone on a raft in the East Sea. His innate spiritual energy and the Heaven-Reaching Profound Technique allowed him to become a Heavenly Immortal in a day and a Golden Immortal within a year. 394 395

Patriarch Bodhi later attempted to claim Sun Wukong as a disciple. Sun Wukong rejected him because he had already attained Golden Immortal cultivation and considered the Heaven-Reaching Profound Technique superior to Bodhi’s offer. Bodhi’s attempt to Soul Search him failed, and an older, identical Sun Wukong—Great Sage Sun—intervened to protect him. 396 397

Appearance

Sun Wukong is a furry, monkey-faced stone monkey. Before visiting the East Sea Dragon Palace, he wore little more than a grass skirt; afterward, he adopted a regal set of golden armor that transformed his appearance. 395 400

  • Wields a golden cudgel normally kept in his ear in needle-sized form. 401
  • Wears the Phoenix-Feather Purple-Gold Crown, Chain-Linked Golden Armor, and Lotus-Root Silk Cloud-Stepping Boots. 399
  • Can transform into a towering giant ape in battle. 401 402
  • Possesses golden Eyes of Truth capable of examining opponents’ weaknesses. 410 413

Personality

Sun Wukong is bold, impatient, proud, and intensely driven to become stronger. His encounter with Patriarch Bodhi taught him that even Golden Immortal cultivation left him vulnerable, motivating him to cultivate at extreme speed. 398

He is cunning and opportunistic, most notably when he coerced Ao Guang into surrendering the Sea-Pacifying Divine Needle Iron, the Dragon Palace treasury, and a set of armor in order to redeem Flower and Fruit Mountain. 398 399 400

Despite his arrogance and taunting nature, he cares deeply for his Monkey Offspring. After returning to Flower and Fruit Mountain, he ordered them to remain hidden and cultivate so they could survive the powerful enemies he had provoked. 403
