Background / History

Tsunade is a Senju descendant and the elder sister of Nawaki. When intelligence suggests that Nawaki may be targeted during a mission, she brings Uchiha Yao to Uzumaki Mito and urgently seeks a way to protect her brother. Before Nawaki departs, she gives him Hashirama’s chakra-patterned jade necklace, treating it as an important family heirloom. 101 102

After Nawaki is critically wounded, Tsunade follows Orochimaru’s team from a distance, attempts to safeguard her brother, and later becomes suspicious of Orochimaru. Nawaki is believed dead for years, though he is eventually revealed to have survived through Yao’s secret intervention and an arrangement involving Tsunade and Mito. 102 175

Tsunade’s examination of Yao’s unstable Kekkei Genkai establishes her as a central medical authority. Tsunade is fiercely protective of the people she considers family or comrades.
