Background / History

While serving as the Team Leader Teacher for an Inner Courtyard expedition in the Star Dou Great Forest, Xuan Zi left the group to steal bird eggs. During his absence, the students encountered a wounded Hundred Thousand Year Blood Erosion Dragon Lizard; six disciples were killed before the survivors could defeat it. The incident became the defining failure of his career and prompted questions about his competence as a leader 27 30 358.

A year later, Xuan Zi was consumed by guilt and alcoholism. He attempted to resign at a Sea God Pavilion meeting, but Mu En, Yan Shaozhe, and the surviving Inner Courtyard disciples convinced him to remain at Shrek Academy 39.

He later took a strong interest in Tang San after learning the youth possessed Twin Martial Souls—Blue Silver Grass and the Haotian Hammer—and had mastered Tang Sect and Clear Sky Sect techniques. Xuan Zi believed Tang San could surpass the historical Tang San at the same age, and repeatedly argued that martial soul quality alone could not determine a Soul Master's future 70 100.

Yan Shaozhe arranged for Xuan Zi to escort Tang San into the Star Dou Great Forest to seek the Eight Spider Lances. During that trip, Xuan Zi again became distracted by bird eggs and was intercepted by Bear Monarch. His concern for Tang San caused him to lose focus in battle; by the time he returned, Tang San had been critically injured by a Man Faced Demon Spider 117 118. Xuan Zi killed the spider through overwhelming pressure, but Tang San was left with severe venom injuries 119.

His protection of Tang San continued to fail. Xuan Zi could not catch Xuanji Douluo after Tang San's kidnapping, then mistook Tai Tan—Tang San's rescuer—for an accomplice and fought him until Mu En intervened 156 157. Later, Xuan Zi personally led a Shrek mission after most of the alternate team withdrew in support of Huo Yuhao. He kept Tang San on the mission, remained outside while the students entered a bandit cave, and arrived only after a Corpse Explosion killed Chen Zifeng and Yao Haoxuan. He saved Tang San from Corpse Poison by sealing his meridians with Soul Power 164 166.

Xuan Zi regretted having driven Huo Yuhao away from Shrek, but later concluded that Huo Yuhao was a Holy Spirit Church spy who had deliberately exploited his flaws and orchestrated disasters around the academy. This belief hardened his hostility toward Huo Yuhao and led him to seek Shrek's salvation through action against the Holy Spirit Church 153 302.

During the campaign against Original Sin City, Xuan Zi sustained injuries that damaged his foundation beyond treatment. Tang San later exploited his weakened state, killed him, and absorbed his power through the Eight Spider Lances 366 413.

Xuan Zi is an aged, disheveled man commonly seen carrying food and alcohol. His ordinary appearance is marked by messy hair, murky yellow eyes, grease-stained clothing, and a perpetually present wine gourd 83 117 166.

Personality

Xuan Zi is impulsive, prideful, and easily provoked. Bear Monarch's disrespect immediately enraged him, while Tai Tan's refusal to release Tang San caused him to threaten the stranger with Shrek Academy's wrath rather than first clarify the situation 117 157.

He is deeply attached to Shrek's ideals and believes harsh measures are necessary to preserve continental stability. In debates about Evil Soul Masters, he openly defended sacrificing innocents as a necessary cost of preventing greater harm 83.

Despite his harsh convictions, Xuan Zi is capable of intense remorse. The deaths of students under his command repeatedly devastated him, fueled his drinking, and eventually led him to blame his own flawed martial soul for failures he never intended to cause 39 166 358.

His judgment is strongly biased in Tang San's favor. He repeatedly praises Tang San's talent, temperament, and potential, treats him as Shrek's future hope, and dismisses Huo Yuhao's strength as the product of Evil Soul Master methods 100 164 328.
