History

Sunagakure and Konoha had long competed over territory and resources in the Land of Rain and the Land of Rivers. Sunagakure also sought to expand into areas vacated by Amegakure: its ninja established an outpost inside a town after Hidden Rain Village withdrew, expecting Konoha's impending invasion to prevent a response 29 31.

Jingū Kiraku instead destroyed the outpost with Rain Ninja disguised as Konoha ninja. A survivor reported seeing an Uchiha attacker, while the reinforcements found two Konoha corpses at the site. Convinced Konoha was responsible, Elder Chiyo secured reinforcements from the Third Kazekage, increased pressure on the Land of Rivers, and launched retaliatory raids 28 29 30 31.

After Tsunade's death weakened Konoha's front, Sunagakure moved toward a larger offensive. Kurohōzan and Shirakumo led an attack on a key Konoha supply transit base using a deployment map supplied by Kiraku. The base fell, Nawaki was killed, and Orochimaru was severely wounded and disappeared. Chiyo then ordered a full-scale war against Konoha 53 56 59. Sunagakure's advance broke the stalemate in the Land of Rain and forced Konoha to divert reinforcements, including Hatake Sakumo 60.

Military Capabilities

  • Puppet Technique — Sunagakure fields Puppet Masters, including Chiyo, Kurohōzan, and Shirakumo; its forces used numerous puppets in the assault on Konoha's supply base 53 56 59.
  • Poison weapons — Chiyo's poisons became especially effective after Tsunade's death left Konoha without her medical countermeasures 53 77.
  • Limitations on the Konoha front — Despite advancing more than a hundred kilometers in less than a month, Sunagakure suffered losses when Hatake Sakumo attacked its stretched supply lines. Its traps failed to stop him 77 133.

Relations and Trade

  • Amegakure — Former adversary in the Land of Rain. Kiraku later supplied Sunagakure with intelligence on Konoha's deployments, helping its offensive, but refused to send troops when the Third Kazekage sought aid 29 56 77 122.
  • Konoha — Long-standing territorial rival and Sunagakure's opponent in a full-scale war following the attack on the supply transit base 31 59.
  • Prosthetic Armament agreement — Elder Ebizo negotiated a trade that gave Sunagakure one hundred sets of Amegakure's Prosthetic Armament and reconnaissance services. In return, Amegakure received puppet-manufacturing technology and secret puppet-control techniques 131 133.

Notable Members

  • Third Kazekage — Approved Chiyo's reinforcements and considered purchasing Amegakure's equipment and intelligence 31 122.
  • Chiyo — Elder who directed Sunagakure's response to the outpost attack and ordered the full-scale offensive against Konoha 30 59.
  • Ebizo — Elder advisor who led negotiations with Amegakure over Prosthetic Armament 122 131 133.
  • Kurohōzan and Shirakumo — Puppet Masters who led the strike on Konoha's supply transit base 53 56 59.
