Background / History

Huang Yaoshi is the master of Peach Blossom Island and one of the martial world's Four Greats. A renowned polymath, he created much of Peach Blossom Island's martial arts himself and is versed in astronomy, geography, the Five Elements and Eight Trigrams, Mysterious Gates and Hidden Jia, agriculture, water conservancy, economics, and military strategy. Wang Chongyang reportedly admired his breadth of talent. 152 154

His harsh treatment of disciples left lasting consequences. Lu Chengfeng was crippled after being expelled, while Qu Lingfeng died after attempting to steal imperial antiques and artworks to please his master. Upon learning that Qu Lingfeng had left behind a daughter, Huang Yaoshi openly grieved and arranged to recover his disciple's remains. He later modified the Whirlwind Sweep Leg Technique so Lu Chengfeng might eventually regain limited mobility. 179 180 188

Huang Yaoshi values loyalty, filial piety, and patriotic resolve despite his contempt for rigid formalities. He praises the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan for honoring their commitment in the desert and is moved by Guo Jing's filial vengeance. 181 199

Huang Yaoshi is fiercely devoted to Huang Rong. His hostility vanishes when she cries, and he immediately removes his mask and comforts her with open tenderness. However, his affection for his daughter makes him intensely suspicious of Guo Jing, whom he initially dismisses as clumsy and unworthy. 176

He is arrogant, unconventional, and highly conscious of his status as a senior master.
