Background

Tang Chen was the former Sect Master who created the Clear Sky Sect's period of glory. Even after retiring from public affairs, he remained the clan's central pillar and a source of pride for its disciples. His standing, together with the sect's power, made the Clear Sky Sect one of the foremost forces on the continent. 64 69

He was Tang Wei's father and the grandfather of Tang Hao and Tang Xiao. When Tang Hao returned after being defeated by Lin Hanye's group, Tang Chen did not react with anger or immediately assign blame. Instead, he questioned Tang Hao about the battle and accurately inferred much of the opposing side's coordinated tactics. 68 69

After Tang Hao reached Level 70 and obtained Divine Slaughter's Domain, Tang Chen recognized him as the heir to the Clear Sky Douluo title. He nevertheless warned Tang Hao against arrogance, specifically cautioning him about Bibi Dong and the opponents who had previously defeated him. 105

Tang Chen ultimately chose to leave the Clear Sky Sect in pursuit of godhood, compelled by a promise connected to Bo Saixi. Before departing, he arranged for Tang Hao to inherit his legacy and taught him Ring Explosion, hoping the sect would retain three Titled Douluo after Tang Hao and Tang Xiao matured. 162

Appearance

Tang Chen is depicted as an imposing figure in long gray robes, with black hair and black eyes. His presence is described as abyssal and vast like the sea. 105

  • Wears gray robes. 105 148
  • Has black hair and black eyes. 105 148
  • Possesses a broad, overwhelming aura befitting a Peerless Douluo. 105

Personality

Tang Chen is observant and highly experienced in combat. He carefully reconstructs battles from limited information and identifies hidden threats rather than judging solely by visible strength. 69

He is also intensely proud, competitive, and determined to pursue godhood despite the danger to his sect. The prospect of fighting a Peerless Douluo-level opponent immediately reignites his fighting spirit, while his belief in his own superiority over Qian Daoliu remains a defining part of his character. 148 162

His pride can become rigidity. Lin Hanye criticizes him for refusing to adapt to unfavorable combat conditions, and his aerial battle against Qian Daoliu exposes this weakness. 178 181 Tang Chen is willing to scheme for the Clear Sky Sect's future, including giving Lin Hanye an intentionally false Ring Explosion method. 162 176

Late in the story, his fixation on Bo Saixi and his shattered self-image drive him into despair and madness after learning that she never loved him. 241 242

Abilities & Skills

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang Chen's Tool Martial Soul is the Clear Sky Hammer, and he has cultivated to the point where his soul rings are fused into the martial soul rather than visibly displayed. 172

  • Can summon a massive Clear Sky True Body; at full strength, its hammerhead expands to roughly a thousand meters. 175
  • His hammer techniques make him renowned as “Invincible on the Ground.” 148 181
  • His direct fighting style is less effective against highly mobile aerial opponents; Qian Daoliu forces him into a passive position by exploiting the sky. 178

Clear Sky Nine Absolutes

Tang Chen is the only known Clear Sky Sect member able to rapidly employ five force-exertion methods from the Clear Sky Nine Absolutes in succession. 175

  • Seal
  • Pierce
  • Shake
  • Break
  • Collapse 175

Ring Explosion

Ring Explosion is the Clear Sky Sect's divine secret technique. By detonating a soul ring, the user releases its power completely, temporarily merges it into an attack, and produces strength far beyond their normal limit. 171

  • Personally teaches the technique to Tang Hao before leaving the sect. 171
  • Warns Tang Hao not to use it before becoming a Titled Douluo and completing his soul-bone set, as the backlash could be fatal. 171
  • Uses all nine Soul Ring explosions when surrounded by Spirit Hall's Six Great Enshrined, sustaining severe injuries in the process. 182
  • Deliberately gives Lin Hanye a false version of the technique in an attempt to impede his growth. 162 176 184

Asura Demonic Sword and King of Slaughter State

Tang Chen later becomes the King of Slaughter after being parasitized by the Blood Red Nine-Headed Bat King. His consciousness returns only after Tang San critically wounds him and the Asura God's intervention kills the parasite. 240

  • Wields the Asura Demonic Sword during the assault on the Soul Master Guild Headquarters. 242
  • Carries the Asura legacy's first eight trials and intends to use them to enable Tang San's final inheritance trial. 240
  • His demigod body and sword are insufficient against Qian Daoliu after the latter ascends to godhood. 242

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Clear Sky Hammer — his Tool Martial Soul and primary weapon. 172
  • Asura Demonic Sword — sword associated with the Asura God inheritance, carried during his final battle. 242
  • Clear Sky Token — entrusted to Tang Hao to rally the surviving Clear Sky Sect members. 241

Relationships

  • Tang Wei — Son and Clear Sky Sect Master. Tang Chen entrusts the sect to him before leaving to pursue godhood. 162
  • Tang Hao — Grandson and chosen successor to the Clear Sky Douluo title. Tang Chen trains him in Ring Explosion and places the sect's future hopes on him. 105 171
  • Tang Xiao — Grandson. Tang Chen believes Tang Xiao can eventually reach Level 97 despite considering Tang Hao the more talented of the two. 171
  • Qian Daoliu — Lifelong rival, fellow Peerless Douluo, and old acquaintance. Their battle at Clear Sky Peak ends in a draw, but Qian Daoliu later defeats him after becoming a god. 101 181 242
  • Bo Saixi — The person Tang Chen hoped to reunite with after becoming a god. Her revelation that she never loved him devastates him and triggers his final loss of control. 162 242
  • Lin Hanye — Rival and perceived threat to the Clear Sky Sect. Tang Chen challenges him at Clear Sky Peak and secretly gives him a fake Ring Explosion method. 157 162 176
  • Tang San — Great-grandson and eventual Asura God successor. Tang Chen helps prepare Tang San's inheritance, then sacrifices his life to complete it. 240 243
