The moment they entered, the mercenaries inside—warriors, knights, and people of other professions alike—all looked at them excitedly.
To them, children daring to come here meant only two possibilities: either they were geniuses, or something had gone wrong at home.
And geniuses generally would not choose to come here, so the latter was far more likely.
And they loved mocking people like that.
When they saw them enter, they began booing one after another, looking utterly disgusting.
At the sight, a trace of anger flashed across Cai'er's little face. She already disliked being watched by so many people, especially when they were filled with hostility. With that thought, she summoned the two daggers within her, intending to teach them a lesson.
But Ye Ling quickly noticed her intention. He grabbed her little hand and signaled for her to stay calm.
Cai'er said nothing. She trusted Ye Ling, so she held back and waited to see what Ye Ling intended to do. That was what mattered.
After they stepped forward to accept a mission and were refused by the young woman issuing missions, several drunken warriors who had been egged on by their friends burst into laughter. They walked over, pointed at them, and cursed, "Yeah, hurry up and get back home. At your age—"
Before the warrior could finish, a massive golden sword flew out from Ye Ling's direction and stopped horizontally against his neck. Its edge was murderous, its aura surging violently. If that foul-mouthed warrior took another step forward, his head would likely have fallen from his shoulders.
Feeling that terrifying sword aura, the warrior fell silent in confusion. The dreadful stench of death left him feeling as though blades were pressed against his back. Drops of foul-smelling liquid trickled down from his crotch, nauseating everyone nearby.
All the mercenaries, including the young woman issuing missions, shuddered. Some could not help but tremble.
"You should be grateful that I acted in time and kept the disgusting words you had yet to say from coming out. Otherwise, your head might have ended up somewhere else."
"This is fine for now. At least I do not particularly want to kill you. As a mercenary, you have contributed to killing the Demon Clan. Keep your life, then. Kill a few more demons with it."
After saying that, Ye Ling recalled his Angel Sacred Sword. Killing him was meaningless, and it would only dirty the Angel Sacred Sword. It was meant to slaughter foreign enemies, not humans.
After seeing the strength Ye Ling had displayed, the young woman issuing missions did not hesitate any longer. He was very strong, and Long Haochen, who had come with him, surely qualified as well. She immediately assigned him a mission.
Seeing the young woman issue the mission, Ye Ling shook his head and said, "Big sister, life here must be difficult, right?"
"I would not say difficult. Compared to them risking their lives, I have it fairly good. I am just truly tired of it. Their words are far too filthy. But for the Mercenary Guild behind me, and for the ordinary people around Haoyue City, I can only remain at my post." The young woman sighed helplessly as she spoke.
Yet she did not complain much, because she knew her work was not simply for her own livelihood. It was also for the humans around Haoyue City.
After Long Haochen accepted the mission, Ye Ling smiled and led them away. Before leaving, he said, "Perhaps this kind of life will end soon. With the Human Race progressing as it is now, victory will come soon enough. When that time comes, perhaps the Human Race will welcome the dawn as well."
After saying that, Ye Ling spoke no more and left with Long Haochen and Cai'er.
"The dawn?" the young woman murmured. Then, a flower-like smile bloomed across her lovely face. "I am looking forward to the dawn's arrival."
The mercenaries finally came back to their senses, but none of them dared to breathe too loudly. They looked fearfully toward the direction Ye Ling and the others had left, still shaken with lingering terror. Fortunately, they had not run their mouths, or they would have been the ones in trouble.
At that moment, a knight remembered something. Looking toward where Ye Ling had vanished, he said, "I remember now. That young man is the younger brother of Hell Rose Li Xin. His name is Ye Ling, and he is a genius!"
"You mean the Ye Ling who defeated that Fourth Rank expert at the Kuangsha Warrior Branch Temple?" A warrior seemed to recall something as he spoke. He still remembered that incident from over half a year ago clearly.
"It should be him."
The mercenaries spoke in shock. They knew they had run into someone they could not afford to provoke this time.
Seek revenge?
Even a hundred of them could not get past Hell Rose Li Xin, much less provoke Ye Ling, who was stronger than her and capable of fighting a Fourth Rank expert.
"Brother Ye Ling, why did you not give him further punishment for acting like that? Why did you only scare him?" After Long Haochen went off alone to complete his mission, Cai'er looked at Ye Ling curiously and asked.
"It is simple, Cai'er. I have a question for you as well. Why do you think we cultivate so hard, improve ourselves, join a Demon Hunting Group, and head to the Demon Clan battlefield?" Ye Ling asked in return.
"Of course it is to kill the Demon Clan. That is what Grandfather told me when I underwent the Reincarnation Trial," Cai'er answered honestly.
"In the future, we will face powerful members of the Demon Clan, perhaps even Demon Gods. In many cases, we naturally will not be able to deal with the low-level Demon Clan and Magic Beasts within Human Race territory, and most powerful experts will not have any intention of handling them either."
"Perhaps to us, those Demon Clan and Magic Beasts can be killed with a flick of the hand. But what about ordinary people? When they encounter Magic Beasts, even merely Level One or Level Two Magic Beasts, they may die miserably. These mercenaries may not be powerful, but they exist to protect the humans within our territory, so that we will have fewer worries when fighting outside."
Ye Ling explained.
Hearing this, a thoughtful expression appeared on Cai'er's little face. She understood somewhat.
Brother Ye Ling was right.
Then she wrapped an arm around Ye Ling and left with him.
Seeing this, Ye Ling smiled and rubbed Cai'er's head as he led her away. Long Haochen should be finishing soon.
Still, that was only what he said. If that warrior had truly continued speaking disrespectfully, or even insulted them outright, Ye Ling would not have minded completely erasing his value.
For the safety of the residents around Haoyue City, he would spare the man's life.
But that did not mean Ye Ling would tolerate him excessively.
He was not the only person capable of bringing safety to humanity.
