Background / History

Tang San was born in Holy Soul Village as Tang Hao's son. At age six, he attended the village Martial Soul awakening ceremony alongside Starry Sky. Unlike Starry Sky, who socialized easily with the other children, Tang San kept his distance and regarded them with disdain. His simple clothes, tanned skin, and short black hair reflected his upbringing in the village. 1

He awakened Innate Full Spirit Power and the Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul. He also sensed a second Martial Soul—the Clear Sky Hammer—but chose to conceal it after seeing Starry Sky's three martial souls. Tang Hao dismissed the Blue Silver Grass as worthless and expected Tang San to remain a blacksmith. 2

At Notting Academy, Tang San became Yu Xiaogang's disciple after the latter identified his Twin Martial Souls. Tang San saw Yu Xiaogang as a powerful and knowledgeable patron, particularly because he lacked support at home. 6 7

Tang San accompanied Yu Xiaogang into the Soul Hunting Forest to acquire his first Soul Ring. When they were pursued by a Mandala Snake, he used Tang Sect techniques to defend them, but kept his more unusual capabilities concealed from Starry Sky's group. After Yu Xiaogang was poisoned and incapacitated, Tang San independently located, killed, and absorbed a Blue Silver Grass Soul Beast's ring. 10 11

Appearance

As a child, Tang San is described as having healthy tanned skin, neat short black hair, and simple clothing. 1

  • Carries himself with a reserved, often aloof demeanor around peers. 1 6
  • Later bears a red scar on his forehead after events involving Shrek Academy. 40
  • Is seen working with a blacksmith's hammer in Notting City. 15

Personality

Tang San is ambitious, proud, and highly conscious of status. He initially considers himself superior to the other children of Holy Soul Village due to his memories and knowledge from his previous life, making him noticeably unsociable. 1 6

He is intensely determined to become stronger and resents being underestimated. This drives him to pursue Soul Rings, forge hidden weapons, endure Raiden Shogun's dangerous cooking, and attempt to absorb a ten-thousand-year Soul Ring beyond his limits. 11 15 46 49

Tang San places great importance on reputation, especially the honor of his Tang Sect background. While escaping the Mandala Snake, he considered abandoning Yu Xiaogang but worried that doing so would damage his reputation if the incident became known. 10

Despite this self-interest, he is deeply loyal to Yu Xiaogang as his teacher. He repeatedly defends Yu Xiaogang's reputation, challenges Yu Yuanzhen over Yu Xiaogang's expulsion from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and swears to seek justice for him after twenty years. 20 70
