Geography & Appearance
- Giant horned skull: The island’s defining structure is visible from a considerable distance. Its unusual shape repeatedly astonishes newcomers 39 94 114 273.
- Spacious interior: The skull contains enough space for thousands of stationed pirates, residential districts, and shops 60.
- Eye-socket entrances: Kaido flies through the skull’s eye sockets to reach the main building’s rooftop terrace. King also uses them when deploying in his Pterodactyl form 3 257 294.
- Summit: The top of Onigashima hosts confrontations between Ian and Kaido, as well as private gatherings overlooking the island 178 179 338.
- Inner-sea setting: Onigashima lies inside Wano’s enclosing walls, rather than directly in the New World’s open sea. The surrounding inner sea formed as water accumulated within those walls over eight hundred years 3.
Alleged Origin
- Wano folklore describes Onigashima as the skull of a giant demon defeated by a brave samurai, eventually becoming an island 114.
- Hancock and Teach independently wonder whether it is an enormous giant’s skull. Ian does not confirm its origin 114 273.
- Ian notes that the legend is no longer commonly mentioned after Wano loses its samurai 114.

Population & Military Presence

- Young recruits: Ulti and Page One are given Onigashima as their new home. Yamato later introduces Sanji and other newcomers to the island 60 94.
- Fish-Man troops: More than a thousand Fish-Man soldiers accompany Ian back to Onigashima after his recruitment expedition 114.
- Nearby aquatic communities: Fish-Men and Merfolk living in the surrounding waters surface to welcome Ian during a later return 178.
- Controlled beasts: Fierce animals become a conspicuous part of the island’s population, remaining docile through the Dango Fruit’s power 115.
- Artificial Devil Fruit users: By Kuzan’s tour, such users are visible almost every few steps. Teach reports that Ian commands thousands of them, including many giants 281.
Technology & Defenses
- Aircraft testing: Queen’s experimental aircraft progresses from short, unsuccessful flights to operating over the sea around Onigashima 114.
- Flight squadron: Drake serves as Onigashima’s leading test pilot and becomes captain of the first prototype aircraft squadron. Ian directs its deployment against the Sun Pirates from the island 117.
- Beam-cannon batteries: Queen installs advanced coastal weapons combining acquired blueprints with other ancient technologies. Enel intercepts their fire during Ian’s assault 257.
- Armored defenders: Kaido’s forces deploy the Bravens in armor comparable to that worn by Ian’s Beast Giants, alongside the Tobi Roppo 257.
- Enhancement serum: Queen develops a serum that drives controlled beasts and Artificial Devil Fruit users into a stronger berserk state 281.
History
Kaido’s Headquarters
Kaido and Ian return to Onigashima after their confrontation with Gecko Moria. Kaido lands on the main building’s terrace, where Yamato runs out to greet him 3.
The island becomes a site of Kaido’s brutal training for Ian and Yamato. His blows shatter the terrain, nearly pierce the skull’s dome, and make the entire island tremble 6.
During Kozuki Oden’s attempt to defeat Kaido, Onigashima is Oden’s intended destination. Ian, Yamato, Jack, and Black Maria leave the headquarters while Kaido intercepts Oden’s force elsewhere 14.
Expansion & War Preparations
Onigashima serves as a staging point during the conflict with Whitebeard. King departs to confront Whitebeard’s main forces, while Ian and Yamato leave to hunt affiliated crews attacking Beasts Pirates territory. Jack, Ulti, and others remain behind to train 63.
After the war, Charlotte Linlin visits the island but leaves without incident following a tense exchange with Kaido 73.
Later, the island’s districts expand and controlled beasts are introduced. Aircraft experiments also advance, giving the Beasts Pirates an operational flight squadron 114 115 117.
Staged Split with Hachinosu
The World Government’s attempt to provoke a succession dispute changes the atmosphere on Onigashima. Returning pirates regard Ian with reactions ranging from suspicion to admiration, while Ian and Kaido arrange a confrontation to exploit the government’s expectations 132.
Their performance escalates into a full-scale exercise between Onigashima’s headquarters faction and Ian’s Hachinosu-based forces. Nearly half of the assembled headquarters pirates choose Ian, leaving the opposing sides approximately equal in number once his arriving forces are included 178 179.
The battle nearly destroys Onigashima and ends inconclusively. Ian subsequently leaves with a fleet carrying more than ten thousand followers, producing a genuine geographical division despite the conflict’s staged premise 183.
Decisive Battle & Reunification
Ian later returns with nearly thirty ships and more than twenty thousand fighters. After Douglas Bullet bypasses Wano’s outer defenses, the fleet advances directly toward Onigashima. Queen fires the island’s beam cannons, while Yamato freezes the surrounding sea into a battlefield strong enough to support charging giants 257.
At the summit, Bullet fights Kaido and activates his awakened Combine-Combine Fruit. Its influence spreads across the entire island, absorbing docked ships and stored weapons. Onigashima’s skull disappears as a colossal figure nearly a thousand meters tall rises in its place 258.
Following the conflict, Kaido submits to Ian. King, Queen, the Tobi Roppo, the Bravens, and the remaining Wano-based Beasts Pirates also swear allegiance to him 261. The crew’s headquarters is subsequently reported to have moved back to Wano 266.
Ian’s Headquarters & Final Preparations
Onigashima hosts the arrival of new members, including Teach and Kuzan. Teach guides Kuzan around the island, while Kaido returns with Dragon and Nico Robin 273 280 281.
Six years later, Onigashima remains the Beasts Pirates’ true headquarters but has changed little compared with mainland Wano: its limited area leaves little room for further construction. Ian continues sparring there with Kaido, Bullet, Yamato, and Hancock 293.
The island receives Shirahoshi and her parents for protection, and later becomes a gathering place for allied forces. Pluton is docked at its port when the Red-Haired Pirates and Charlotte Family arrive 294 327.
Before the anticipated clash with the World Government, a grand banquet is held on Onigashima. Ian, Yamato, and Hancock gather at its highest point, and Ian decides to remain in Wano to await the government’s attack 338.
