Background & History

Ian was a gamer from Earth who was defeated while playing a Winged Dragon deck against an AI. He awakened in the Pirate World in the body of a two-year-old on a deserted New World island. Kaido found him during a suicide attempt, brought him into the Beasts Pirates, and became the “Teacher Kai” who raised and trained him. The fruit that arrived with Ian granted him the power of the Sun God, The Winged Dragon of Ra. 2

As a child, Ian was sent by Kaido to face Gecko Moria's crew. Though initially hesitant, he used his Mythical Zoan forms against Moria and later helped defeat him. His training with Kaido and Yamato pushed him to develop Beastman Mode and a defense-specialized Sphere Mode; three years later, he had grown into a giant centaur-like demon. 1 3 6

Ian became a central figure in Wano's government after killing Orochi and being hailed as the Flower Capital's new general. By age eight, he was Wano's ruler, negotiated directly with CP0 for Rokushiki data and Seastone terms, and developed trade partnerships to sell Wano's weapons abroad. 26 37 42

After leaving Wano aboard the Golden Flying Dragon, Ian expanded the Beasts Pirates' influence throughout the New World. His actions at Hachinosu, Amazon Lily, Fish-Man Island, Minion Island, and against Wang Zhi made him a global power and eventually earned him recognition as a Pirate Emperor. 58 108 118 125 131

Ian ultimately surpassed Kaido, inherited command of the Beasts Pirates, and unified the New World under his influence. He later pursued the Road Poneglyphs, reached Laugh Tale, and prepared Pluton and his allied forces for a final conflict with the World Government. 260 270 322 340

Appearance

In human form, Ian matured from a small child into a handsome, energetic young man by age fifteen. His transformations are markedly more elaborate than ordinary Zoan forms and are characterized by gold, crimson flame, wings, and a solemn divine motif. 5 119

  • Golden Flying Dragon — A colossal golden dragon capable of flight and flame control; by Chapter 128, it exceeded 100 meters in length. 2 128
  • Golden Sphere — A huge patterned golden sphere with exceptional defensive strength. 2
  • Divine Phoenix — A fiery bird formed from gold and crimson flames; its wings can make the sky appear to burn. 2 58
  • Beastman Mode — A slender golden dragon-human with clawed feet and hands, elbow-wing ornaments, shoulder pauldrons, crimson eyes, a blue forehead gem, a halo-like ring behind his head, and immense back wings. 5
  • Combat Beastman Mode — A giant dragon-human samurai form, approximately eighty to ninety meters tall even after using Return to Life to compress his body. 220

Personality

Ian is calculating, pragmatic, and exceptionally confident in his own judgment. He negotiates with CP0, Umit, Morgans, Dragon, and other major powers as an equal, treating commerce, weapons, territory, and alliances as tools for strengthening the Beasts Pirates. 38 41 125 131 282

He is often indifferent toward enemies and conflicts that do not interest him, such as the war Doflamingo arranged on a foreign island. However, his pragmatism also extends to governance: he argues that ordinary people are civilization's most valuable resource and develops Wano rather than merely exploiting it. 81 94

Ian is protective of people he accepts as companions or partners. He safeguards Amazon Lily, offers Fish-Man Island protection and immigration opportunities, promises to protect Kuina and Zoro, and prioritizes the growth of his younger crewmates. 108 118 162 184

His ambition is overt. He seeks to stand above all others, become captain of the Beasts Pirates, claim the New World, obtain the Great Treasure, and challenge the World Government's order. 184 260 270 322

Abilities & Skills

Sun God, The Winged Dragon of Ra

Ian's Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit grants several distinct forms rather than a single beast transformation. Its physical amplification greatly exceeds that of ordinary Mythical Zoans. 2 5

  • Golden Flying Dragon enhances strength, speed, reactions, durability, flight, and golden flame control. 5
  • Golden Sphere provides extraordinary defense; Moria's Haki-coated scissors could not damage it. 2
  • Sphere Mode Beastman uses eggshell-like shields to maximize defense at the expense of mobility. 6
  • Divine Phoenix converts Ian completely into flames, allowing physical attacks to pass through him and enabling large-scale fire attacks. 2
  • The Divine Phoenix form and its red flames originally had time and stamina limits; Ian later trained away the transformation's pre-charge time. 72 124
  • As of Chapter 293, Ian had not yet awakened his Devil Fruit and believed only a sufficiently powerful opponent could force that breakthrough. 293

Destruction Flame

Ian can generate crimson fire with destructive properties far beyond his ordinary golden flames. It is effective against powerful Haki users but can be resisted by exceptionally concentrated Haki. 171 219

  • Used to kill Golden Lion Shiki. 171
  • Can be delivered through the Sword of Destruction or a flaming sword strike. 219 300
  • Its heat can melt ground, evaporate seawater, and ignite distant objects merely through proximity. 314 315
  • Whitebeard managed to halt the flame just before it reached his forehead by concentrating Haki into a dense defense. 219

Haki

Ian possesses all three forms of Haki and has mastered advanced applications. 171

  • Armament Haki: Internal Destruction — Can project condensed Haki as barriers and penetrate targets internally. 129 171
  • Observation Haki: Future Sight — Accurately predicts attacks and lets him time instant Divine Phoenix transformations to evade damage. 124 171
  • Conqueror's Haki Infusion — Mastered against Golden Lion; dramatically enhances his already overwhelming physical attacks. 171
  • He had not yet understood Observation Killing's principle when he assessed his Haki techniques as otherwise complete. 171

King Punch

A charged strike that stores energy over time before releasing it in a devastating blow. 130

  • Used to severely injure and defeat Wang Zhi, destroying a substantial portion of his island. 130
  • Its charge time makes it difficult to use during a continuous high-speed battle. 108
  • Ian considers it teachable only to people born with exceptionally powerful vitality. 133

Rokushiki and Physical Combat

Ian acquired Rokushiki materials from CP0 and trained himself and his crew in the techniques. 38

  • Uses Rankyaku: Tempest Kick Barrage to launch repeated cutting air blades. 112
  • Combines Sphere Mode, Haki, and flame-coated punches in close combat. 108
  • His raw physical strength lets him lift the Golden Flying Dragon as though it weighs nothing. 128

Leadership, Trade, and Governance

Ian directs a military-industrial power rather than a conventional pirate crew. 94 176 278

  • Negotiated Seastone supply terms and acquired Rokushiki data from CP0. 38
  • Partnered with Umit to export Wano's excess weapons. 41 42
  • Established factories, airports, bomber forces, fighter jets, and a worldwide arms trade. 96 176 197 282
  • Promotes Fish-Man and merfolk immigration to Wano for seabed exploration, underwater combat, and mutual protection. 118 119

Ancient Text

Ian can read Poneglyphs and understands the Ancient Text, allowing him to pursue the Road Poneglyphs and the history tied to Wano and Laugh Tale. 282 322

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sword of Destruction — Ian's primary bladed weapon, used to channel Destruction Flame and powerful Haki strikes. 62 219
  • Golden Flying Dragon — A gold-colored warship over 300 meters long, built in Ian's likeness with a Winged Dragon figurehead, wing motifs, broadside gunports, and a massive bow cannon. 43
  • Surtur — A Fire Spirit and soul weapon created when Charlotte Linlin infused five years of Ian's soul into his red flame. It can grow into a giant flame humanoid and follows Ian's commands. 154 164 241

Relationships

  • Boa Hancock — Ally and crewmate whose intense love for Ian causes lovesickness; Ian protected Amazon Lily and brought her into the Beasts Pirates. 108 112 114
  • Trafalgar Law — Trusted young executive and companion. Ian supported Law's acquisition of the Ope Ope no Mi, while Law often acts as a calm counterpoint to Ian's decisions. 125 175 184
  • Portgas D. Ace — Crewmate whom Ian recruited after the Goa incident and entrusted with the replica Azure Dragon Fruit. 172 174
  • Dracule Mihawk / Hawk Eyes — Rival, training partner, and eventual recruit. Ian let Mihawk attack him to improve his Haki, defeated him decisively, then brought him into the Beasts Pirates. 162 300 301
  • Monkey D. Dragon — Occasional ally against the World Government and business partner in the weapons trade. 184 282
  • Fisher Tiger and Jinbe — Partners in Ian's Fish-Man Island policy. Tiger came to respect Ian's immigration proposal, while Jinbe later organized Fish-Man and Sea Beast forces for him. 118 119 272
  • Morgans — Strategic media partner. After Ian defeated Wang Zhi, Morgans offered his cooperation and gave Ian his heart as proof of sincerity. 131
  • Edward Newgate / Whitebeard — Major rival and occasional strategic partner. They cooperated to deter the World Government from attacking Fish-Man Island, then fought each other directly. 218 219
  • Surtur — Ian's living soul weapon and obedient Fire Spirit. 154 241
