Background

The Heavenly Court's founding date is unknown. It emerged after the Great Dao arose from Chaos and the planes of the universe began multiplying; its Heavenly Emperor has existed longer than the Three Thousand Great Worlds in their current form. 703

It has ruled the heavens for countless years, maintaining its position by suppressing repeated rebellions and external threats, including invasions by Chaos Demons. 711 Its authority extends across the Heavenly Dao and the Myriad Worlds, although its Immortal Gods do not routinely intervene in the affairs of the lower realms. 581 664

The Court is not a unified moral force. Its members include Immortal Gods who value the protection of living beings, officials driven by rank and profit, and figures willing to support outside forces. 631 664 813 Its laws limit how often Immortal Gods may openly appear in the Three Thousand Great Worlds, but this restraint has not prevented individual officials from bringing calamity to mortal realms. 664 1064

Immortal rank is not determined solely by cultivation. Merit can secure promotion, and an official's authority, Heavenly Dao Luck, combat ability, and cultivation may not correspond directly to one another. 702

Heavenly Realm and Access

The Heavenly Court is located above all planes and cannot be reached merely by traveling through the universe. Entry requires ascending the Heaven-Ascent Stairs, a sacred route that even most Immortal Gods—including world-guarding Heavenly Gods—cannot use. 697 710

The stairs appear as colossal golden mountains rising into the universe. Li Ya concluded that one must reach the Golden Immortal Dao Fruit Realm merely to attempt the ascent. 698

• Heavenly Realm — The Court's principal domain, filled with vast palaces, cloud seas, powerful formations, and unusually dense spiritual energy. 957 963

Authority and Administration

Blue Sky

Blue Sky is both the will of the Heavenly Dao and the Heavenly Court's most powerful weapon. It is said to possess overwhelming Heavenly Might and to sweep away evil demons. 807

• Blue Sky may be appealed to over dissatisfaction with a Heavenly God's actions. 657
• It administers ascension through merit and Heavenly Dao Luck, making ascension a lifeline available to living beings rather than a process fully controlled by the Court. 904
• Those drawn into conflicts between Sons of Heaven may suffer Blue Sky's punishment even if their chosen patron prevails. 711

Heavenly Dao Luck

Heavenly Dao Luck supports immortal offices, authority, and the Court's broader rule. The Heavenly Emperor possesses the greatest authority over this luck and can strip it from Immortal Gods. 702 703

The Court has encouraged myths of its Immortal Gods to spread throughout mortal worlds. As knowledge of the Heavenly Court grew, the Heavenly Dao Light Layer and Heavenly Dao providence of the Heavenly Spirit Great World increased. 605

Guardianship and Destruction

Heavenly Gods guard the Three Thousand Great Worlds and numerous other cosmic planes, but guardianship is paired with the authority to destroy. The God of Heavenly Destruction's faction holds major authority over killing and conquest. 710

The Court ordered Heavenly Spirit God to execute the Heavenly Spirit Immortal Venerable and destroy the Heavenly Spirit Great World after the latter stole an Immortal Palace treasure; Heavenly Spirit God carried out the execution but delayed the world's destruction. 581 589

Military Forces and Resources

• Heavenly Armies — At least one Heavenly Army contains hundreds of millions of Heavenly Gods. Its members undergo trials and are evaluated by superior officials for talent and potential. 631 640
• Heavenly Soldiers — Soldiers who survive Reincarnation trials may be assigned to contests between Sons of Heaven, with promotion to Heavenly God offered as a reward for backing the victor. 727
• Divine Steeds — Essential assets used for expansion and stabilization throughout the Heavenly Dao. Some become suns or moons for mortal worlds, while others explore Chaos. 978

Internal Politics

The Heavenly Emperor has countless children known as the Sons of Heaven. The strongest Sons of Heaven have ambitions toward the imperial throne, and their struggles routinely force Immortal Gods to choose sides. 703

These conflicts resemble imperial succession disputes on a vastly greater scale:

• A Son of Heaven favored by the Heavenly Emperor can attract Immortal Gods and allies, while an offending Son may be cast into Reincarnation alongside those associated with them. 703
• Lower-ranked officials can be recruited into factions before they understand the conflict that will destroy them. 703
• Immortal Gods recruit lower-realm Cultivators to act as proxies, exposing entire Great Thousand Worlds to Blue Sky's punishment. 711
• During later purges, Immortal Gods were imprisoned in the Heavenly Prison or cast into mortal Reincarnation as the Son of Heaven Hongyang fought Heavenly Dao Supremes. 1064

The Court's factionalism is extensive enough that even Immortal Lords must act cautiously around recruitment attempts and competing departments. 736

• Heavenly Spirit God — A low-ranking Heavenly God assigned to guard the Heavenly Spirit Great World. Though originally loyal to the Court, he delayed its order to destroy that world and later admitted that many Immortal Gods secretly lean toward outside forces. 581 631
• Gu An / Grandmaster Wushi — Initially viewed with suspicion after conflicts involving Heavenly Court Immortal Gods.
