Location and Layout

White Deer Fortress occupies a mountaintop on the Lionheart Kingdom's eastern frontier. It is bordered by the Noldo Forest to the east and north, the Bacchus Empire beyond the Dengjier Mountains to the south, and Ailedge Village to the west. This geography once made Ailedge its sole practical link to the kingdom's interior and left the fortress commercially isolated when that route was lost. 55

• The fortress was built on and around an entire mountain; its outer walls stand dozens of meters above the valley floor. 57

History

Foundation and Godric's Defenses

White Deer Fortress began as an ordinary pioneer territory roughly a century before Li Ang's arrival. As settlement expanded southeast of Long River Town, it became the county seat of a separate county. 57

The Bacchus Empire's northward expansion and construction of Shield Wind Fortress south of the Dengjier Mountains turned White Deer Fortress into a permanent frontline position. Baron Godric built his reputation as a defensive commander there: he did not launch campaigns against the Empire, but repelled every attack and expanded the fortress at least eight times over several decades. 57

Its position made it the principal eastern barrier of the Lionheart Kingdom. Capturing it would allow Bacchus forces to advance toward the kingdom's interior; consequently, the Empire sought it for decades. 57 84

Registration of Wheat Fragrance Territory

Li Ang and Sarah traveled to White Deer Fortress to register the white-griffin emblem and pioneer territory of Wheat Fragrance Territory. The fortress guards inspected their noble insignia, disarmed them, and escorted them into the castle under strict border-security procedures. 57

After the registration, Godric transferred more than a hundred refugees from Ailedge to Li Ang, as the fortress lacked space to house them. At the time, White Deer Fortress maintained nearly a thousand guards and faced substantial costs from maintaining both its garrison and continual construction. 59

Bacchus Siege

White Deer Fortress was besieged while Godric and roughly 300 elite soldiers were absent. Amy directed the defense with a little over 500 soldiers: nearly 400 archers and about 100 heavy infantry. 81 84

The defenders exploited the mountain's height and the fortress's multilayered defenses, but Bacchus crossbowmen, siege ladders, heavily armored infantry, and Imperial Gladiators nearly forced a collapse. The outer watchtowers and arrow towers were taken early, isolating the fortress. 84 87

Li Ang arranged for Risadiran to continuously sound a horn from the forest at the moment of greatest danger. The attackers mistook the horn for approaching Horn Summon Ranger reinforcements and withdrew from the walls to search the forest, allowing the defenders to retake the outer wall. 84 87

Li Ang later negotiated with General Agason, securing a withdrawal in exchange for the release of two Bacchus governors. Amy aided the deception by sending ale beneath Godric's Three Lions banner, prompting Agason to publicly smash the barrels before departing to deny any collusion. 90

The Livius Trap

When Governor Livius later prepared another attempt on the fortress, Li Ang and Amy staged a violent internal conflict and feigned Li Ang's expulsion. The performance convinced Livius that White Deer Fortress was divided and vulnerable. 163

Amy led roughly 400 fortress troops out in a staged pursuit, apparently leaving the fortress undefended. Fabius then led more than 700 Shadow Infantry into the open gate, where the portcullis fell behind them and archers and crossbowmen fired from the elevated positions within the fortress. 163

• More than 300 Shadow Infantry entering with Fabius were killed; fewer than 100 survived to surrender. 164
• Fabius survived despite severe wounds, while the remaining Bacchus forces outside were trapped between Li Ang's force, conscripts, Sir Roland's pursuing troops, and the Owl Knight Order's reconnaissance. 164

Noldo Relations and Security Controls

As armed mercenaries and Ebony Gauntlet Knights gathered near the Noldo Forest, Li Ang closed White Deer Fortress, permitted civilian movement only through a side gate, and expelled armed outsiders from the entire county. Knight's territories that supplied or sheltered foreign armed groups risked being treated as rebellious. 167

The policy demonstrated to the Noldo Elves that White Deer Fortress did not support the mercenary groups hunting them. Risadiran's earlier horn deception during the siege also helped establish that the fortress's lord trusted a Noldo subordinate. 167

A trade zone was later established east of the fortress for commerce with the Noldo, while a former prisoner barracks was converted into a planned Noldo military camp. 205

Transfer to Amy

King Ulrich initially reassigned Godric to Eagle Claw Fortress and granted White Deer Fortress to Malbert. 216 After Ulrich's increased tax demands made the fortress unattractive to Malbert, he agreed to transfer it to Amy in exchange for shares in northwestern businesses. 217

Amy returned after signing the agreement and became the recognized lord of White Deer Fortress. 217

Li Ang's road construction and Long River Express connections changed this position. Wheat Fragrance Territory became Aier County's trade-distribution center, and the roads linking it to White Deer Fortress were maintained voluntarily by nearby farming communities. 165
