Background / History

The Ancient Worm originated from parasites living on an ancient great Yao. After the Yao died, the parasites evolved or were altered by the corpse's lingering regret, remorse, and anger; the Ancient Worm inherited a fraction of its memories and became the original Mythical of [Insect]. It identifies itself as having been born at the end of the Third Era, while its obsession with glory and display stems from the Myth of Yao's residual personality. 458 668

It survived multiple eras and slept for 15,500 years. Near the end of the previous era, it was attacked by a Guai, leaving half its body afflicted with Wither Disease and making the Immortal Palace it carried a dangerous liability. 451

The Dark Steel Civilization discovered the severely injured Ancient Worm in a small Grotto-heaven beneath an altar. At the time, it was a golden, 120-meter creature with a ruptured abdomen, yet it taught the future Underground Alliance how to use the Grotto-heaven and helped lead them out of danger. The Alliance came to regard it as its savior despite its poor condition and guarded secrets. 421

Human medical experts eventually treated the Wither Disease through a dangerous surgery involving the Greedy Demon God, Eternal Tinder, specialized medicines, and Life Essence. The successful treatment restored the Underground Alliance's greatest military foundation and enabled plans to move its Grotto-heaven and construct Sky City. 446 447

After recovery, the Ancient Worm sold the Immortal Palace to Lu Yuan for 10 points of Luck and 300 Spirit Essence, believing that Lu Yuan and Human Civilization possessed greater fortune than itself. It later continued backing the Underground Alliance while joining the Aberrants in establishing the Ninth Era Development Foundation. 451 548

Appearance

The Ancient Worm is a colossal beetle-like Mythical creature. At its most debilitated, its main body was estimated at roughly 1.4 kilometers long and 600–700 meters tall; half of it was withered, blackened, and surrounded by corruptive aura from the Wither Disease. 444

  • Black, bronze, or gold-toned carapace that can resemble steel or black gold. 444 687 548
  • Six powerful insect legs, though several have been severed in battle and later remained unregrown. 709 713
  • Large compound eyes, antennae, wings, and a rhinoceros-beetle-like body. 444 699
  • A massive Sacred Great Horn, capable of regrowth and used as both a symbol of status and a primary weapon. 687 689
  • In later public appearances, a red scar across its carapace and missing legs became marks of its wartime reputation. 713
  • Can project a much smaller avatar within the Immortal Palace, approximately the size of a large truck. 545

Personality

The Ancient Worm is theatrical, boastful, and intensely concerned with its image. It habitually raises its horn, announces grand titles, and enjoys being worshipped by weaker civilizations. It considers a hornless appearance humiliating enough to grow temporary decorative horns with no combat value. 636 545

It is highly profit-driven and readily accepts dangerous work for Civilization Points, profit shares, Spirit Essence, or resources that can strengthen the Underground Alliance. However, it is not simply reckless: it is fearful of Guai, recognizes the danger posed by Innate Mythicals, and is notably shrewd in matters with long-term consequences. 687 689

Despite its vanity and self-interest, it repeatedly protects allies. It intervenes for Human Civilization at the Buzhou Gathering, risks itself to buy time for Lu Yuan during the battle that created Gale Wind, and assists Xing against the Evil Dragon Emperor. 700 709 702

Abilities & Skills

Mythical Physique and Combat Power

The Ancient Worm possesses ceiling-level combat strength on the Pangu Continent, though it acknowledges that it cannot defeat a Guai. Its body, horn, and Field allow it to confront ancient powerhouses and intimidate entire civilizations. 687 750

  • Impaled and tore the Four-Eyed Elder of the Abyss Edge Clan in half with a single horn charge. 689
  • Can withstand severe damage, including the loss of legs and an eye, while continuing to defend Lu Yuan. 709
  • Its immense mass and six-legged charge can cause localized earthquakes. 689
  • Its carapace is exceptionally resilient, but it can be damaged by powerful enemies, Queen Insects, disease, and Mythical equipment. 687 709

Sacred Great Horn and Earth Field

The Sacred Great Horn is the Ancient Worm's signature weapon and status symbol. A fully regrown horn is Immortal-grade material capable of penetrating matter, while a shed horn can be sold or forged into powerful equipment. 515 687

  • Its Field restrains opponents with force drawn from the earth, leaving them unable to move before the horn strike. 689
  • A horn can be deliberately shed and regrown, though doing so severely weakens the Ancient Worm in the short term. 515
  • It sometimes uses incomplete replacement horns solely for appearance; these false horns have no combat power. 545
  • Its first horn sold to Lu Yuan was used to create the Earth Escape Flying Shuttle. 687

Insect Escape

Insect Escape allows the Ancient Worm to burrow through earth at extreme speed and create exclusive underground transit routes for the Insect Race. 688

  • Dug a passage spanning thousands of kilometers for rapid Insect Race movement. 688
  • Non-Insect Race creatures cannot use its specially made passages. 688
  • Enables the Insectoid Army to retreat underground when facing overwhelming threats. 689
  • Used to rapidly reach the Buzhou Gathering when joining Human Civilization's resistance. 699

Insect Race Leadership and Reproduction

The Ancient Worm commands King Insects and maintains a reproductive relationship with twelve Queen Insects in its Lower Qiankun. It can mobilize Insectoid Warriors as an army when supplied with sufficient food. 457 687

  • Recruited more than twenty King Insects and over a thousand reproduction-capable insects for Lu Yuan's campaign. 687
  • Claimed that an enormous Insectoid Army could be bred within one month if food supplies were sufficient. 687
  • Negotiated with the twelve Queen Insects to grant Lu Yuan's Insectoid Warriors reproductive capability. 457
  • Its presence exerts instinctive pressure over lesser King Insects. 457

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sacred Great Horn — Regenerating Immortal-grade natural oddity and the Ancient Worm's principal weapon. 515 687
  • Immortal Palace — A former treasure inherited from the Gear Civilization; it could communicate, trade, and teleport, though its teleportation function had been lost. The Ancient Worm transferred it to Lu Yuan. 447 451
  • Insect Steel — A heavily contaminated stone-like material removed during its surgery; the Ancient Worm gave it to Xing to forge a weapon. 702
  • Spring of Healing — An Epic-grade man-made wonder gifted by the Aberrants; it can heal soul injuries and reduce treatment costs. 545

Relationships

  • Lu Yuan — Business partner, physician, and battlefield ally. Lu Yuan healed the Ancient Worm, purchased the Immortal Palace, advised its political negotiations, and repeatedly enlisted it for military support. 446 451 687 700
  • Underground Alliance — The Ancient Worm's primary protégés and adopted “biological sons.” It guided them after their discovery of its Grotto-heaven and served as their greatest protector. 421 447
  • Twelve Queen Insects — Its mates and the reproductive rulers of its Lower Qiankun; they can injure it during mating but are inferior to it in direct combat. 457 687
  • Aberrant group — Partners in the Ninth Era Development Foundation. They pushed the Ancient Worm to invest more resources into Human Civilization. 545 548
  • Huangtian Great Emperor / Myth of Yao — The Ancient Worm claims to be a former general of the Huangtian Great Emperor, while its existence originated from the remnant soul and will of the Myth of Yao. 458 689
  • Xing — A wartime ally. The Ancient Worm provided him with Insect Steel and later joined him in resisting the Evil Gods. 702 829
  • Ancient Race — A hostile and transactional rival. The Ancient Worm accepted the title of Insect Race Great Emperor from them, but later opposed their Blood Sacrifice Rule and fought their elders. 693 689
  • Guai — Its greatest source of fear. A past Guai attack caused its Wither Disease, and it admits that it cannot defeat one. 451 750
