Background and History

The Dugu Family’s Poison Backlash

The Dugu Family’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent inheritance exposes its Soul Masters to their own toxins. Rather than seek outside scholars, successive generations researched ways to alleviate the backlash through cultivation and Soul Skills. Dugu Bo developed extensive expertise in toxins and his own approach to Martial Soul research 65 68.

His accumulated poison visibly altered his appearance. He suppressed it through a Poison Pill and the opposing extreme cold and heat of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Although he had discovered the well and used it as a medicinal field, he initially kept Dugu Yan away because its energies could trigger the toxins inside her 63 70 278.

Meeting Su Wen

Dugu Bo reveals himself angrily when Su Wen hints at Dugu Yan’s cultivation problem. Initially skeptical that a young scholar could help, he becomes interested when Su Wen proposes using Solidified Soul Power or a Soul Bone to contain the toxins 67 68.

Su Wen then shares an auxiliary Soul Power circulation route that creates conditions for managing the poison. Dugu Bo tests it successfully and is moved by Su Wen’s willingness to share such valuable research. The approach is subsequently expanded to benefit future Jade Phosphorous Serpent Soul Masters of the Dugu Family 69 70.

His attitude becomes markedly warmer: he asks Su Wen to call him “Grandpa Dugu” and grants him access to the medicine garden. There, he evaluates Su Wen’s proposed ice-and-fire body tempering, warns him of the risks, and witnesses the successful transformation of his body and Martial Soul 70 72 74.

Supporting Cultivation and Founding the Academy

Dugu Bo helps Old Jerry obtain suitable plant Soul Rings in Sunset Forest, using his knowledge of local soul beasts and his private herb garden. After learning that Su Wen possesses a technique for absorbing Soul Rings beyond conventional limits, he agrees to help establish a new force named the Academy 82 83 84.

He also arranges a dragon-type Soul Bone for Dugu Yan to store her toxins and support Martial Soul evolution. He demands a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone as a betrothal gift from Yu Tianheng; the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan agrees, and Dugu Bo subsequently guards Dugu Yan while she transfers poison into the bone during cultivation 86 91 103.

Protecting Su Wen from Hu Yan Zhen

When Hu Yan Zhen attempts to kill Su Wen and seize his Soul Bones, Dugu Bo confronts him and rejects his claim that he was merely testing a junior. The threat of Poison Douluo retaliating against the Elephant Armor Sect forces Hu Yan Zhen to negotiate 114.

Dugu Bo ultimately secures compensation consisting of one Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone, a Five Thousand Year head Soul Bone, and another Thousand Year Soul Bone 115.

Xiao Wu and the Standoff with Tang Hao

While observing the Royal Fight Team’s battle against Shrek, Dugu Bo identifies Tang San’s incompletely fused External Soul Bone and recognizes Xiao Wu as a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast. He proposes capturing her, considering Su Wen a plausible future recipient of her Soul Ring 119 122.

Tang Hao intervenes when Dugu Bo confronts Shrek. Despite initially fearing Clear Sky Douluo’s strength, Dugu Bo threatens to poison everyone on Tang Hao’s side if Su Wen is killed. Once Tang Hao’s injuries become apparent, Dugu Bo and Su Wen use their leverage to obtain the Soul Detonation Secret Technique in exchange for silence about the encounter 123 124.

Afterward, Dugu Bo agrees that he needs greater strength to protect Su Wen and Dugu Yan. He plans to excavate his Dragon Bloodline using Old Jerry’s Little Land Dragon Golden Melon before taking the Ninth Grade Dragon Ganoderma 125.

Later Hunts and Cooperation

Dugu Bo supplies Dugu Yan with the Daffodil Jade Flesh Bone to repair toxin damage and open her Hidden Meridians. On Evil Spirit Island, he restrains a nearly ten-thousand-year Purple Scaled Poison Dragon Scorpion and guides Dugu Yan’s poison into it, allowing her to finish the beast and obtain her Fourth Soul Ring 127 141.

He later cooperates with Gu Rong and Xiao Zhan against the Void Silvermoon Tapir and the eighty-thousand-year Flame Overlord. He agrees that Xiao Zhan should retain the Flame Overlord’s torso Soul Bone to maximize the benefit of absorbing its matching Soul Ring 142 146 147.

At Rank 93, he helps Chen Xin fight the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger, combining constriction, internal poison attacks, petrification, and Time Freeze. After the hunt, he and Chen Xin deter the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python when Xiao Wu identifies them as her former pursuers 193 194 197.

Transferring the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Dugu Bo voluntarily leaves the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to Su Wen, requesting only space to continue cultivating poisons. He accepts its incorporation into the Academy’s foundation and is asked to weaken the surrounding poison mist so that it deters soul beasts without automatically killing visiting Soul Masters 278 279.

He subsequently receives the Stone God’s Purple Rank One Test: collect all four Earth Attribute limb Soul Bones in exchange for a Special Stone Monster Torso Bone. Su Wen identifies the potential for that reward to connect his Soul Bones into Soul Bone Armor, prompting Dugu Bo to pursue high-quality bones rather than merely satisfy the minimum requirements 282 283 285.

Later, Dugu Bo personally informs Su Wen that the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan has been exterminated 410.

Appearance

  • An elderly man with sinister, cold eyes and an intimidating presence 78 114.
  • His appearance is initially altered by toxin corrosion, which outsiders mistake for an effect of his Poison Skill 63.
  • His pupils can turn oily green and emit green light; they are described as having previously returned to normal 119.
  • His Martial Soul Avatar is a giant serpent covered in emerald-green scales 142.

Personality

Dugu Bo is reputed to be eccentric, solitary, and moody. His readiness to threaten entire factions makes opponents fear consequences beyond a direct duel. Hu Yan Zhen is particularly wary that offending him could lead to poison being released against the Elephant Armor Sect 114.

His severity contrasts with his affection for Dugu Yan. He would prioritize her even if only one person could benefit from a treatment, and his restrictions on her access to the medicine garden stem from concern for her safety 70.

He responds strongly to genuine assistance. Despite recognizing that Su Wen deliberately maneuvered their early conversation, he appreciates the results and becomes friendly toward both Su Wen and Old Jerry. Later, he privately resolves to side with Su Wen if the conflict with the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan becomes irreconcilable 70 82 279.

Abilities and Skills

Poison Manipulation

Dugu Bo combines extreme toxicity with highly developed diffusion, giving him the destructive potential to wipe out an entire city 37.

  • Releases poisonous gas capable of affecting multiple opponents almost immediately 124.
  • Uses poison mist to mark and protect territory in Sunset Forest 64 70.
  • Fuses his own poison with Dugu Yan’s poison because they share the same source 141.
  • Under Su Wen’s guidance, develops a method in which poison carries Soul Power into an enemy’s body, gathers, and erupts internally 194.
  • Previously suffered restrictions from his own toxin backlash; these disappear after the poison is resolved 124.

Seventh Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

His Martial Soul Avatar transforms him into a massive serpent suited to constriction and venom delivery 141 142 193.

  • Uses his tail to deflect attacks and his coils to immobilize prey 141.
  • Injects venom through his fangs while restraining an opponent 141.
  • Emits faint Dragon Might by Rank 93 193.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Freeze

Time Freeze arrests movement within its affected area. During its use against the Void Silvermoon Tapir, Su Wen remains able to think but cannot control his body 142.

  • Can affect an area of several thousand square meters 194.
  • Dugu Bo learns to shrink its range to conserve Soul Power and strengthen its effect 194.
  • Uses it to interrupt the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s attempt to charge again 194.

Soul Bone Skill: Medusa’s Gaze

Medusa’s Gaze projects light from his serpent eyes that petrifies targets 142.

  • Immobilizes a figure during the Void Silvermoon Tapir hunt 142.
  • Dugu Bo times it against the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger after recognizing that its charge follows a straight line 194.
  • Has a cooldown; the tiger begins recovering from petrification and can prepare another charge before the skill is available again 194.

Poison and Medicinal Research

His knowledge extends beyond toxins to medicinal properties, herb interactions, and Martial Soul cultivation 65 84.

  • Analyzes whether opposing ice and fire poisons can neutralize each other while warning that their extreme attributes still damage the body 72.
  • Researches herbs more safely after his own toxins are resolved 128.
  • Recognizes complementary properties between the Aromatic Silk Beauty and Eight Petal Immortal Orchid 128.
  • Has opened two Hidden Meridians by Chapter 129, but struggles to locate the remaining six even after Dugu Yan describes them 129.
