Background and History

Zhao Lei was already a nine-ring Titled Douluo when he began accompanying Ye Han. His presence allowed Ye Han to question Soul Masters in the Star Dou Great Forest without resistance, leading to the discovery of the Amethyst Crystal Scorpion suitable for Ye Han's first Soul Ring 3.

He became a regular protector and adviser for Ye Han's group during their Soul Beast hunts. He recommended choosing Soul Beasts compatible with a user's attributes and supplied practical information about Soul Beasts, Soul Rings, and Soul Bones 6 8. Though he often claims to know little about Soul Beasts, he recognized the Thornback Turtle because it had supplied his own fifth Soul Ring 8.

Zhao Lei's public display of nine Soul Rings during the Heaven Dou Imperial City ambush established him as a major deterrent. His pressure forced Dai Li of the Star Luo Empire to kill his own Soul King subordinate in order to end the confrontation, while Sword Douluo Chen Xin judged Zhao Lei stronger than himself 12.

He later became Ye Han's principal training opponent. While restricting himself to the level of a Soul King and using only his first five Soul Skills, he repeatedly sparred against Ye Han's seven-person team, exposing their inability to handle an experienced high-level Soul Master with unconventional sound-based techniques 19 20.

During the battle against Qian Daoliu, Zhao Lei used his ninth Soul Skill to block the fleeing Limit Douluo long enough for Di Tian to catch up. He was badly injured by the exchange but survived, and Ye Han awarded him all six of Qian Daoliu's Soul Bones in recognition of his contribution 106 107.

The six Soul Bones elevated Zhao Lei's strength considerably and eventually enabled his rise to Level 99. Even before fully refining them, his power was considered close to that of a Limit Douluo 141 286.

Personality

Zhao Lei is outspoken, boastful, and frequently shameless about claiming credit for group achievements. After Qian Daoliu's death, he repeatedly tried to present himself as the decisive participant in the battle, even wagering with Dugu Bo to prove that Qian Daoliu had died 107 108.

He is also impulsive and overconfident around enemies. Ye Han specifically criticized him after he treated the conflict with Wang Xu's forces as a game, allowing himself to be trapped in a formation that even Limit Douluos could not break 173.

Behind his theatrics, Zhao Lei is protective of Ye Han and the academy. He waited anxiously outside the Soul Hunting Forest after Ye Han's group disappeared inside, supported Ye Han's decisions despite worrying for his safety, and rapidly responded when Evil City came under attack 17 43 141. He also has clear personal principles, refusing to tolerate Qian Renxue's killing intent despite his usual frivolity 141.
