Background / History

Rescue and refuge in Konoha

Rie survives the massacre of her village after witnessing her father being bound and her mother being assaulted. Rinto kills the perpetrator, Ono Buta, and accepts responsibility for Rie at her dying mother’s request. Her mother gives her the name Sakuta Rie, and Rinto takes her away after they bury her parents 15 133.

While following a merchant caravan toward Konoha, Rie distributes Ration Pills to other displaced children. Their dependence on her develops into lasting admiration: they call her “Big Sister,” and later welcome her enthusiastically at Konoha’s orphanage 16 36.

Her trauma initially makes her afraid of unfamiliar adult men and unwilling to separate from Rinto. When an ANBU rule threatens to divide them, Rinto refuses and prepares to leave rather than expose her to renewed distress. Hiruzen intervenes, and the siblings are eventually permitted to remain in Konoha 17 18.

Foster care and ninja education

Kyoko helps care for Rie during her early life in Konoha. Rinto encourages her to learn chakra extraction without insisting that she become a ninja; Rie instead embraces training as a way to become useful to him 22 35.

Before infiltrating Kumogakure, Rinto entrusts her to Mito Uzumaki and Tsunade. He requests care for no more than three years, although he later thanks Mito for looking after her over four years 51 105.

Rie trains intensely while living with the Senju household. Tsunade recalls her staying awake until two or three in the morning to practice chakra refinement, nature training, and elemental ninjutsu without complaining. By her graduation assessment, she has developed an inventive Water Style approach that defeats a close-combat-oriented Hyuga opponent 100 206.

Team Eleven and the Land of Grass

Rie joins Team Eleven with Teuchi and Uchiha Fugaku under Rinto’s guidance. During an information-gathering mission in Nihe Town, a Grass ninja harasses her. She kills him, fights his companions, and destroys the izakaya in the confrontation 133.

Despite wanting to pursue the fleeing survivors, she stays with her teammates and follows Rinto’s advice to control her darker impulses. Rinto then changes their original C-rank assignment into an S-rank mission to eliminate every ninja in the Land of Grass, promising intervention only if their lives are genuinely endangered 134.

Rie leads the team’s preparations and ambush tactics, but their opponents anticipate an attack. When Kakuzu threatens her, Rinto intervenes and rescues her. The prolonged Land of Grass training later becomes a defining experience for the trio, with Rie displaying exceptional endurance throughout it 135 136 206.

She subsequently defeats A in the joint Chunin Exams. All three members of Team Eleven receive promotion 147.

Rebuilding Amegakure

Rie presents an A-rank reconstruction mission on behalf of the Land of Rain’s Daimyo, offering a reward of one hundred million ryo. When Hiruzen initially refuses, she suggests giving the contract to Iwagakure instead. He accepts, provided she brings others; she specifically requests personnel who know Earth Style: Earth and Stone Transition 169.

At fifteen, she becomes Amegakure’s Village Head. Starting with ruins and a disordered settlement of one hundred thousand refugees brought from Sunagakure, she directs salvage work, drainage excavation, foundation raising, and rebuilding. After three years, the village has dense high-rise buildings, skywalks, and bridges connecting it to the Lands of Wind, Earth, and Fire, making it a thriving commercial center 208.

Her departure frustrates Hiruzen’s earlier hope that she would anchor Rinto to Konoha. Although she is not officially classified as a rogue ninja, he considers her position effectively similar 169 236.

Village defense and expansion

When forces from three major nations gather near Amegakure’s bridges, Rie orders the Guard Unit to block the Fire-side crossing and demolishes the Wind-side bridge as a warning. She also deploys the reanimated Hanzo supplied by Rinto 209.

Before Iwagakure’s invasion, her White Zetsu clones identify the enemy’s route and troop composition. She deliberately passes up opportunities for ambushes so Amegakure can prove itself in direct battle. Fighting alongside Kagami and Hanzo, she breaks the enemy formation, engages Kitsuchi, and helps secure Amegakure’s victory 290 291 292.

As First Amekage, she later fights Sunagakure and returns to reinforce her village when Rinto warns of an intruder. Her administrative plans also include raising additional land and accepting homeless refugees from war-torn regions 299 331 332 338.

Appearance

  • Early childhood: Chubby cheeks, plump hands, and large, expressive eyes. During the caravan journey, she wears oversized black capri pants and a clean sky-blue pullover, with a small backpack 16.
  • Later youth: Described as having grown into a graceful young lady by her graduation assessment 100.
  • Eye color: Light green eyes are noted when she receives Samehada 208.
  • Combat clothing: A black combat bodysuit beneath an open blue robe during the battle against Iwagakure 291.
  • Dojutsu: A single purple Rinnegan concealed beneath her bangs 291.

Personality

Rie is affectionate toward Rinto and eager to help people she considers friends. As a child, she shares his supplies with other orphans but becomes upset that she has nothing of her own to contribute. Her wish to support him motivates her early interest in becoming a ninja 16 22 37.

Her childish fondness for sleeping, food, and festivals coexists with extraordinary training discipline. She endures demanding practice and prolonged field training without the complaints that overwhelm her teammates. Mathematics remains a conspicuous exception to her perseverance 22 123 206.

Her childhood trauma leaves her with violent impulses, especially when confronted by predatory behavior. Rinto teaches her to control that darkness rather than let it dictate her actions; her decision not to chase fleeing enemies shows that she can place her teammates’ safety above her anger 133 134.

As a leader, she is pragmatic and protective of Amegakure. She builds the village without becoming arrogant, yet reacts to military threats with enthusiasm and a readiness to retaliate. Her initial disgust at Samehada’s appearance disappears as soon as she learns its practical value 208 209 280.

She also enjoys teasing Rinto and gossiping with Teuchi and Fugaku. Their shared hardships produce a bond so close that the two men regard her as their “big brother” rather than simply a female teammate 365 378.

Abilities & Skills

Fire Style

  • Her natural chakra affinity is Fire, confirmed through chakra paper 35.
  • Uses Great Fireball to engulf the Nihe Town izakaya during her confrontation with Grass ninja 133.
  • Produces powerful flames during Team Eleven’s ambush and uses Fire Style to create openings for withdrawal 135.
  • Studies scrolls for Flame Bullet, Great Flame Bullet, Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, and Ash Pile Burning; possession of these scrolls does not establish mastery of every technique 81.

Water Style

  • Water Candy Bullet / Water Candy Barrage: Fires viscous, chakra-infused water. Dodged shots remain on the ground and restrict an opponent’s footing 100.
  • Water Candy Binding Rope: Binds an opponent after their movement has been compromised 100.
  • Water Wall: Blocks Kitsuchi’s Earth Dragon Bullet 291.
  • Sticky Water Cannonball: Intercepts Shukaku’s Wind Style: Air Bullet without immediately bursting and continues toward the tailed beast 331.
  • Her graduation tactics are her own: Rinto denies having taught her the sticky-water approach when Kagami praises it 100.

Lightning Style Chakra Mode and Nintaijutsu

  • Uses lightning armor to increase her combat speed, seizing and killing a harassing ninja before he can react 133.
  • Combines lightning-covered strikes with close-quarters combat to batter Kitsuchi and send him flying 292.
  • Years of training develop the mode into one of her principal frontline abilities 331.
  • Her cute appearance contrasts sharply with the physical force and killing intent displayed against A in the Chunin Exams 147.

Rinnegan

  • Possesses one purple Rinnegan; its origin and implantation are not documented in the provided account 291.
  • Almighty Push: Uses repulsive force to scatter Iwagakure’s formation and disrupt coordinated attacks 291.
  • Banshō Ten’in: Invokes the technique while fighting Kitsuchi 291.
  • Her single-eye Almighty Push is explicitly less sweeping than Nagato’s comparable use 291.

Chakra Reserves and Supporting Ninjutsu

  • Already has nearly jonin-level chakra reserves while still a genin 135.
  • Hashirama Cells later augment her enormous reserves, supporting repeated elemental attacks with little concern for consumption 291.
  • Uses Shadow Clone Jutsu during Team Eleven’s battle against Grass ninja 135.
  • Receives the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique scroll from Rinto, but receipt alone does not confirm mastery of that version 123.
  • Demonstrates Earth Style during the Nihe Town confrontation 133.
  • Uses White Zetsu clones to track an invading army’s movements and composition 290.

Leadership and Battlefield Command

  • Directs Amegakure’s reconstruction through specific engineering and organizational tasks rather than merely overseeing it in name 208.
  • Uses bridges as defensive chokepoints and is willing to destroy infrastructure to deny enemy access 209.
  • Divides Iwagakure’s formation so Amegakure can concentrate superior numbers locally, reducing Rain casualties while exploiting its fighters’ large chakra reserves 291.
  • Plans population growth through land expansion and refugee resettlement 338.
