Power Progression
Grades measure threat level rather than a universally confirmed, linear evolution path. Cursed Spirits may grow by accumulating curses and Cursed Power over time. 299
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed Womb | 299 | A Curse’s fetal, initial materialization stage. It must metamorphose before it can move freely; Special Grade Cursed Wombs are dangerous exceptions. |
| Newborn / low-grade | 299 | Most are weak at birth, roughly comparable to levels 1–10, and are generally harmless to humans. |
| Grade 4–2 | 299 | Grade 4 Spirits are nearly harmless; Grade 3 Spirits can be deterred by a handgun, while Grade 2 Spirits require substantially greater force. |
| Grade 1 / Semi-Grade 1 | 9 299 | Powerful enough that conventional tanks would struggle against them; they may possess immense bodies, high Cursed Power reserves, and destructive physical strength. |
| Special Grade | 28 123 299 | Beyond conventional military responses. Exceptional individuals can wield Domains and other highly individualized Cursed Techniques. |
| Evolved Special Grade | 314 | Dagon’s evolution demonstrates that growth can refine both a Spirit’s body and mind, granting fuller Cursed Power control, fluent speech, and improved tactical judgment. |
Origin and Manifestation
Cursed Spirits are manifestations of humanity’s negative emotions. Resentment, fear, confusion, unwillingness, suspicion, malice, and rumors can all accumulate into curses and produce a Spirit. 6
Yoshiwara Shrine illustrates this process: the deaths in the Meireki Fire originally produced its Water Ghosts, while later belief that the shrine remained haunted continued creating new Spirits long after the site had moved. 6
A later revelation attributes the widespread rise of Cursed Spirits to the System’s influence after the collapse of Pokémon civilization. Humanity’s rejection of a symbiotic relationship with spirits twisted the remaining world-will toward darkness, allowing Cursed Spirits to proliferate. 417
Appearance
Cursed Spirits have no standard form. Their appearance reflects the fear, curse, or perception from which they originated, ranging from grotesque animals and malformed humanoids to entities that become increasingly human-like at higher ranks. 6 314
- Water Ghosts — White-clad drowned women with loose black hair, burn scars, swollen faces, and elongated tongues; they embody the deaths associated with Yoshiwara. 6
- Pressure-born Spirit — A nearly two-story, caterpillar-like Grade 1 Spirit with a bloated body and enough Cursed Power to feel like “a sea of malice.” 9
- Lower-grade swarms — Weaker Spirits tend to cluster in large groups, as seen in the tide of White-clad Female Ghosts at Yoshiwara Shrine. 6
- High-grade forms — Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon possess more human-like traits, while Rika manifests as an enormous humanoid demon with exposed ribs, flesh-obscured features, and a fanged mouth. 28 314
Abilities & Traits
Cursed Body and Regeneration
Cursed Spirits are masses of curses and Cursed Energy rather than conventional living beings. Their health and Cursed Power are effectively linked: as long as sufficient Cursed Energy remains, they can regenerate repeatedly. 9
- Regeneration can restore major wounds at visible speed when a Spirit has sufficient Cursed Power. 9 225
- Destroying a body is insufficient unless its Cursed Energy is exhausted or exorcised. 9
- Conventional force is ineffective without mystical properties; even a nuclear weapon cannot kill the weakest Spirit if it lacks the required supernatural attribute. 299
- Cursed Spirits sustain themselves on negative human emotions rather than food, ecosystems, or ordinary biological needs. 159
Cursed Techniques
Many stronger Cursed Spirits possess unique Cursed Techniques shaped by their nature.
- Idle Transfiguration — Mahito alters souls through physical contact, causing corresponding changes to the body. 304 305
- Blood and corrosion techniques — The Cursed Womb brothers employ Blood Manipulation and corrosive blood attacks. 250
- Cancer — A disease Spirit possesses Infinite Proliferation and Cursed Power Drain, reflecting cancer’s uncontrolled division and suppression of normal activity. 225
- Sacrifice — A ritualistic Spirit consumes life, including its own cursed body, to increase its attributes. 225
- Meteor — Jogo prepares a destructive Inherent Technique to rescue his allies. 370
Domain Expansion
Exceptional Special Grade Cursed Spirits can deploy Domains, the most energy-intensive form of Cursed Technique. 123
- Tamamo-no-Mae Incarnation — Uses a Domain capable of trapping targets and attempting forced control through Charm. 123
- Shuten-dōji — Uses Rashomon-ka Ōeyama, adding gravity as its Domain’s Cursed Technique. 123
- Dagon — Uses Calm Ripples Horizon, a watery Domain that traps opponents and creates shikigami attacks. 314
- Hanami — Uses Haven’t Heard the Name of the Flower!, a restrained forest Domain focused on practical effect rather than appearance. 376
- Even Special Grades cannot normally activate Domain Expansion repeatedly in one day because of its immense Cursed Power cost. 123
Growth, Intelligence, and Emotion
Cursed Spirits require time and accumulated curses to grow stronger. Higher-ranked Spirits generally become more humanoid in both form and thought. 299 314
- Dagon’s evolution grants him fluent speech, complete Cursed Power control, and a calmer tactical mindset. 314
- Mahito can think, communicate, learn, analyze, and adapt at a level that surprises Satoru Gojo. 309
- Jogo and Hanami experience fear, remorse, loneliness, attachment, and grief for one another, despite their enmity toward humanity. 321 376
- Their capacity for emotion does not change their fundamental danger to humans once they choose to attack and cause harm. 276 376
Weaknesses and Exorcism
Jujutsu Sorcerers are responsible for managing the creation and destruction of Cursed Spirits. 6
- Cursed Tools — Items imbued with curses and Cursed Energy can damage Cursed Spirits directly. 17
- Reverse Cursed Technique — Its positive energy can inflict amplified damage on Cursed Spirits. 121
- Cursed Energy exhaustion — A Spirit’s regeneration fails once its Cursed Power is depleted. 9
- Status and control effects — Lower-level Spirits often have limited techniques and can be neutralized in groups by restraint abilities. 118
- Sleep vulnerability — Darkrai can put Grade 1 Spirits to sleep; its Bad Dreams Ability then continuously weakens sleeping Spirits until they dissipate. 118 119
Relationships
- Humanity — Cursed Spirits are born from human negativity and are generally regarded as humanity’s enemies. 6 276
- Jujutsu Sorcerers — Their primary opponents; sorcerers exorcise Spirits to protect civilians and contain cursed incidents. 6 299
- Cursed Spirit Manipulators — Users such as Suguru Geto can capture Spirits, swallow them to gain absolute control, and deploy their stored Cursed Techniques and Cursed Power in battle. 117 121
- Curse Users — Some Curse Users cooperate with or deploy Cursed Spirits as weapons, including during mass attacks such as the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. 38 219
- Other Cursed Spirits — High-grade Spirits can form organizations and show genuine loyalty, grief, and mutual protection toward companions. 311 321 330 376
Related Cursed Phenomena

| Cursed Tools | Inanimate cursed items that cannot act on their own but contain Cursed Energy and can harm Cursed Spirits. 17 |
| Cursed Objects | Cursed vessels that require living hosts—primarily humans—to exercise their power. 241 |
| Cursed Wombs | The fetal, pre-metamorphosis stage of a Curse becoming a Cursed Spirit. 299 |
| Spirits / Pokémon | Unlike Cursed Spirits, they have biological and ecological needs, can be associated with positive emotion, and are not sustained solely by human negativity. 159 |
