Background / History

A thousand years ago, Sukuna dominated an era of jujutsu. Sorcerers who joined forces against him were crushed, while his indiscriminate killing eventually united much of the jujutsu world in a hunt for him. After his death, his power and soul were attached to twenty fingers that became cursed objects 220 287 391.

Yuji Itadori accidentally swallows one of those fingers in Sendai. Sukuna takes control of his body, fights Akesato, and is suppressed when Yuji regains consciousness. Sukuna remains able to speak through small mouths that appear on Yuji’s body, declaring that he intends to take it over 282 284 286.

Kenjaku later forces Sukuna to manifest by exploiting Yuji’s distress and reveals that Yuji was created as his vessel. Sukuna refuses Kenjaku’s attempt to invoke an old pact and objects to the restrictions imposed on his vessel 389 390.

For the final battle, Megumi and Yuta help move Sukuna out of Yuji and into a separate body. Sukuna turns the process against Yuta, using his cursed power to restore his two-faced, four-armed form before fighting Akesato and Satoru Gojo 443 444 445.

Appearance

When Sukuna controls Yuji, dense cursed-power markings spread across Yuji’s body; an additional pair of eyes can appear beneath his own. His restored body develops the form associated with his legends 284 445.

  • Markings — Runes cover the brow, face, shoulders, arms, torso, and back during his first manifestation through Yuji 284.
  • Extra eyes and mouths — A second pair of eyes appears during possession; smaller mouths can emerge on Yuji’s cheek or hand when Sukuna speaks without taking full control 284 286.
  • Restored form — Two faces and four arms; Sukuna says these features are innate rather than the result of a bodily modification technique 445.

Personality

Sukuna acts according to his own desires, disregarding rules and agreements. He notices powerful opponents but readily threatens weaker people, including bystanders Akesato is protecting. He is also calculating: when direct attacks fail, he changes tactics, chooses advantageous targets, and withholds information about his abilities 288 289 390.

He takes pleasure in competition and acknowledges Gojo and Akesato as worthy opponents. That interest gives way to fury when Akesato withstands his stronger techniques and challenges his claim to supremacy 448 452 453.

Abilities & Skills

Slashing techniques

  • Dismantle — An invisible slash Sukuna can release from different angles, rather than only through a claw movement 287 288.
  • Divinity — A slash directed at targets with cursed power; its effect depends on the target’s strength and the difference in cursed power 288.
  • Limits shown — Akesato repels slashes with psychic power and survives Sukuna’s domain-enhanced barrage through defense and healing 287 288.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

  • Amplifies Sukuna’s slashes and applies guaranteed-hit attacks to targets he selects within its range 287 288.
  • Has no enclosing barrier. Sukuna leaves an escape route in exchange for a larger area, allowing a protected group to leave its range 289.
  • Its reach is restricted when Sukuna has insufficient cursed power; at one finger, he uses it to close the distance against Akesato 288.

Recovery and close combat

  • Heals a facial injury within a second after Akesato punches him, without an apparent drop in cursed power 284.
  • Combines Yuji’s exceptional physique with his own cursed power and skill. In the final battle, he withstands heavy blows and recovers with Reverse Cursed Technique 287 448.

Five Elements and Black Box

  • Uses fire, water, a plant-like technique, and slashes alongside a fifth integrating force to form Five Elements Arrow 452.
  • Opens a hidden Black Box to manifest more than a thousand interconnected cursed techniques, arranged into Five Elements Wheels 453.
  • Deploys New World against Akesato, who withstands it and causes Sukuna to lose control of the technique 453.

True Domain Amplification

  • Extends domain power according to his will, allowing his claws to pierce Gojo’s Limitless defense 445.

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — His vessel after swallowing a finger. Yuji repeatedly suppresses Sukuna, whose stated aim is to seize his body 282 284 286.
  • Akesato — An opponent who survives Malevolent Shrine and Sukuna’s attack within his Innate Domain; they face each other again in the final battle 288 290 453.
  • Satoru Gojo — A current-era opponent who confronts Sukuna after Kenjaku forces his manifestation and fights his restored form 391 445 448.
  • Kenjaku — Created Yuji as Sukuna’s vessel and attempts to call on an ancient pact. Sukuna resents the manipulation and refuses to cooperate on Kenjaku’s terms 390.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — His shadow technique interests Sukuna as a means of returning to the world without relying on Yuji’s body 444.
  • Rime — A person with whom Sukuna has a deep connection; news of Rime’s possible capture draws an immediate reaction from him 391.
