Background / History
Origins and Early Fortunes
Taiqing is the eldest of the Three Pure Ones, the three beings formed from divisions of Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. He received Primordial Violet Qi from Hongjun and possessed the Taiji Diagram, while Yuanshi received the Pangu Banner and Tongtian was associated with the Qingping Sword 78 297.
Taiqing also obtained the Innate Yang Qi from one of the first ripened gourds of the Innate Calabash Vine. The Yin Qi originally obtained by Tongtian was later given to Taiqing to complete the Yin-Yang foundation of his Great Dao 36.
Submission to the Ancestral Witches
When the Three Pure Ones were confronted by the Ancestral Witches, Taiqing chose restraint over a direct clash. He agreed to surrender two of the Innate Five Elements Flags so that the Three Pure Ones could settle their karma and leave safely 97.
During the conflict surrounding the Duke of the East, Taiqing again acted cautiously. He agreed to intervene to protect the Duke of the East, but avoided directly breaking the Great Zhou Heavenly Stars Formation because he did not want to incur unnecessary karma 172 178.
He later used the Taiji Diagram and the Heaven and Earth Xuanhuang Exquisite Pagoda to block Di Jun’s attacks, demonstrating the exceptional defensive power of both treasures 178.
The Human Race and Xuandu
Wu Tian’s Martial Path insights caused Taiqing to consider establishing a sect 297. Taiqing later learned from Wu Tian that the Three Pure Ones’ method of severing the Three Corpses was incomplete because they lacked a complete set of compatible Innate Spiritual Treasures. He concluded that Sagehood would require the Heavenly Dao and Primordial Violet Qi to repair the flaws in their path 299.
Taiqing then traveled among the Human Race disguised as an ordinary old man. He selected the congenital human Xuandu as his disciple and directly imparted the Golden Core Grand Dao. The technique pushed Xuandu to the Taiyi Golden Immortal realm, although Xuandu initially refused to formally acknowledge Taiqing as his master without first consulting Wu Tian 302.
After accepting Xuandu, Taiqing gave him the Taiji Diagram for self-defense. He later determined that his opportunity for Sagehood lay in establishing a great sect based on Human Race fortune 303 305.
Establishment of the Dao Sect
Taiqing first considered establishing a Human Sect, but his attempt to merge his Three Corpses failed. He therefore accepted the path of attaining Sagehood through merit 305.
Wu Tian interrupted Taiqing’s first attempt to establish the sect, accusing him of trying to seize the Human Race’s destiny. The Ancestral Witches used the Twelve Divine Heavens Great Sorcery Formation to block Taiqing’s connection to the Heavenly Dao 306 307.
The confrontation ended through an agreement that allowed Taiqing to proceed. With Wu Tian and Nüwa as witnesses, Taiqing established the Dao Sect. Human Race fortune and Dao Sect fortune flowed into him, and Heavenly Dao merit descended. Taiqing became the second Sage of the Primordial World 311 312.
He advised Yuanshi not to rush into establishing a sect, warning that further accumulation would produce a stronger foundation after Sagehood. Yuanshi ultimately rejected the advice and pursued Sagehood immediately 312.
The Three Pure Ones Divide
When the Human Dao emerged, Wu Tian claimed the Dao Sect’s Deputy Sect Leader fortune with Taiqing’s consent. Taiqing did not resist and instead received feedback from the Dao Sect’s fortune 390 392.
As tensions between the Three Pure Ones continued, Taiqing left Kunlun Mountain with Xuandu and returned to Mount Shouyang. This marked the practical division of the Three Pure Ones 401.
Taiqing later acknowledged that Wu Tian’s Pangu Seal had replaced the treasure he had originally expected to refine from Shouyang Copper. He regarded the seal as a treasure that should have been his, but Wu Tian had taken the copper first and used it to secure control over Human Race fortune 401 492.
Conflict over the Taiji Diagram
Xuandu offered the Taiji Diagram to Wu Tian for inspection. Wu Tian used the Primordial Measuring Sky Ruler to suppress Taiqing’s mark within the treasure and kept the diagram for comprehension 498 499.
Taiqing was angered and left Mount Shouyang to confront Wu Tian, but ultimately allowed the matter to continue after Wu Tian promised to return the treasure. He later lent the Taiji Diagram to Nánjí for use in the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation without appearing before him personally 500 752 753.
The Investiture of the Gods Tribulation
During the conflict between the Three Pure Ones and Tongtian’s forces, Taiqing attacked Duobao and attempted to suppress the Immortal Slaying Sword inside the Taiji Diagram 826.
He later used the Taiji Diagram to seize the Immortal Slaying Sword and helped break the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. His Heaven and Earth Xuanhuang Exquisite Pagoda protected him from the formation’s sword energy 829 833.
Taiqing’s actions deepened the fracture between the Three Pure Ones. After the tribulation, he tried to repair his relationship with Tongtian by proposing an opportunity for Duobao to compete for the fortune of the Western Paradise 886.
Breaking Free from Hongjun’s Control
Taiqing deliberately allowed the God-Slaying Spear to damage him. The strike severed his Saint position and consumed a substantial part of his origin and Primordial Spirit, but it also allowed him to escape Hongjun’s control 847.
Afterward, Taiqing revealed One Qi Transforms Three Pure Ones, producing three figures modeled after himself and bearing auras similar to Yuanshi and Tongtian. He used the technique to regain an independent destiny and re-prove Primordial Unity 850 851.
Taiqing later expressed regret over his role in the collapse of the Three Pure Ones. He believed that his repeated attempts to act as a peacemaker—and his tendency to side with Yuanshi—had prevented the brothers from resolving their conflicts in time 896.
Appearance
Taiqing commonly presents himself as a calm, austere Daoist. While traveling among the Human Race, he disguised himself as an ordinary old man, concealing his immense cultivation and identity 302.
Distinguishing manifestations include:
- His Good Corpse, Lord Taishang, appears as an old man with white hair and beard and a kind expression 488.
- His presence carries a profound Daoist aura capable of calming surrounding cultivators 1086.
- His Sage pressure is powerful enough to affect the surrounding world, although Wu Tian can withstand it while protected by Pangu Hall 312.
Personality
Taiqing is restrained, patient, and highly conscious of karma. He often chooses defense, negotiation, or withdrawal rather than committing himself to a battle whose consequences he considers unfavorable 97 172 178.
He is also highly strategic. Taiqing can endure humiliation, conceal his intentions for long periods, and wait for a favorable opportunity. His decision to sacrifice his Sage position was a calculated attempt to break free from Hongjun’s control 847 850.
Despite his calm exterior, Taiqing is capable of resentment and bitterness. He was deeply frustrated by Wu Tian’s seizure of the Shouyang Copper and later became angry when Wu Tian suppressed his mark in the Taiji Diagram 401 492 499.
In later chapters, Taiqing shows regret over the collapse of his brotherhood with Yuanshi and Tongtian. He remains willing to cooperate with them, but recognizes that their former unity cannot simply be restored 886 896 1099.
