Background

Yuanshi was among the Three Pure Ones who attended Dao Ancestor Hongjun’s teachings at Zixiao Palace. He valued propriety above all and rebuked the Ancestral Witches for making noise before the lecture. His assertion of the Three Pure Ones’ status as the “Orthodox Pangu Lineage” quickly brought him into conflict with Wu Tian and the Witch Tribe. 23 80

He regarded Pangu’s blessings as a responsibility to safeguard the Primordial World, but repeatedly used lineage and status to look down on beings he considered inferior. Xuan Ming publicly condemned him for treating other spirits “like weeds” while claiming the privileges of Pangu’s lineage, leaving Yuanshi humiliated. 80

After becoming a Heavenly Dao Sage, Yuanshi founded the Chan Sect and opened his mountain gate to accept disciples. Rather than immediately confront the dominant Witch and Demon Tribes, he withdrew to the outer Chaos, recognizing that opposing the protagonists of the era would invite backlash from fortune. 313 314

Appearance

Upon awakening from the Heavenly Dao, Yuanshi manifested as a solemn, white-haired Sage enveloped in Yuqing Immortal Light. His bearing retained the dignity and nobility of a Pangu descendant, tempered by an almost Dao-like detachment. 1088

Personality

Yuanshi is proud, exacting, and deeply concerned with hierarchy, propriety, and the dignity of the Three Pure Ones. He is quick to take offense when challenged by Wu Tian, the Witch Tribe, or those he considers beneath his standing. His contempt for Kunpeng and other nontraditional beings exposed his prejudice and double standards. 23 80

As a teacher, Yuanshi is protective but conspicuously partial. Guangchengzi, Chijingzi, Nánjí, and other favored disciples received powerful treasures and personal guidance, while Taoist Randeng and others were assigned dangerous work with little material support. 687 688

The Chan Sect’s losses and its disciples’ betrayals pushed his Dao heart into crisis. He eventually recognized the dangers created by the Three Corpses Severing Method and chose to sever his own emotions and worldly attachments rather than remain controlled by them. 868 878

After awakening from the Heavenly Dao, Yuanshi became markedly more restrained. Though he retained his characteristic pride, he could acknowledge Wu Tian’s goodwill, cooperate for the Primordial World’s benefit, and act without immediately giving voice to his disdain. 1096 1101
