Nature and Functions

The Heavenly Dao is a fusion of numerous Great Daos and Powers of Laws. Its order governs the Primordial World, while the return of paths and sages to their proper positions makes it more complete. It is presented as an impersonal order that does not distinguish between closeness and distance among living beings. 127 240 879

Rule Operation

• Operates the laws that sustain the Primordial World and reacts to proclamations, oaths, and changes that affect its order. 48 122 291

Tribulations and Restraint

History

When the Witch Tribe established itself through an oath invoking the Great Dao, Pangu, Heaven and Earth, and the Heavenly Dao, the Ancestral Witches' soul-imprints and inherent laws entered the Primordial World as law-gods. This made the world more stable and sharply increased the Heavenly Dao's power, but the added authority lay beyond Dao Ancestor Hongjun's command. 46 48 49

The Heavenly Dao recognized the Demon Race's establishment and the manifestation of the Thirty-Three Heavens, even though the Great Dao did not respond. The resulting Heavenly Court became both Di Jun's seat of authority and a manifestation of Heavenly Dao rules. 59 130

It repeatedly came into tension with paths that sought independent authority. When Wu Tian established the Martial Path, it attempted to absorb the new Dao; once that effort failed, it reduced the merit it bestowed. It similarly reacted with tribulation lightning to the Witch Tribe and Zhen Yuanzi's Natural Divine Path before changing its response to a merit reward after they relinquished control over that path. 240 292 294

The emergence of the Human Dao created its most direct conflict with the Earthly and Human Daos. Hongjun used Heavenly Dao power to suppress and erode the new Human Dao, while Empress Pingxin argued that the Heavenly, Earthly, and Human Daos should advance together rather than allow one Dao to dominate the others. 392 393

During the struggle against Hongjun, Wu Tian's enhanced Pangu True Body struck twice with the Heaven-Opening Axe. The blows shattered the Heavenly Dao's rules and origin and destroyed the Jade Creation Disc, severing Hongjun from the Heavenly Dao. 858 The surviving powers then moved to stabilize the Primordial World: the Heavenly Court was steadied by Haotian and the Queen Mother of the West, the Investiture of the Gods continued, and Yuanshi later integrated himself into the Heavenly Dao to mend it. 862 879

Yuanshi's Primordial Spirit remained in the Heavenly Dao's depths until Taiqing used the Three Pure Ones' Heaven-Opening Marks to awaken him. His return caused the Silver Eye of the Heavenly Dao to change and the Primordial World to shake. 1088 Luohu later became a Heavenly Dao Saint to suppress and restore the Western World, further completing the Heavenly Dao. 1101

• Heavenly Court — The manifestation of Heavenly Dao rules and a central mechanism through which those rules govern the world. 130 456

• Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Hongjun sought to merge with and control the Heavenly Dao, but the law-gods created by the Ancestral Witches increased its power beyond his control. He was later severed from it after Wu Tian shattered its rules. 48 49 858
• Wu Tian — Wu Tian repeatedly resisted its control over independent paths, including the Martial Path and Human Dao, then participated in the strike that shattered its rules and origin. 240 392 858
• Ancestral Witches — Their law-imprints became gods who operated the Primordial World's laws, strengthening the Heavenly Dao while retaining authority independent of Hongjun. 48 49
• Empress Pingxin / Earthly Dao — The Earthly Dao countered Heavenly Dao power in the Underworld and supported balance among the Heavenly, Earthly, and Human Daos. 327 393
• Human Dao — Its emergence was opposed through Hongjun's use of Heavenly Dao power, as its independent development threatened the prior heavenly order. 392 393
