A Martial Soul is the essential power associated with survival and combat on the Douluo Continent. People are generally expected to possess one regardless of talent, while its quality directly affects their combat ceiling and cultivation prospects 1 2 89.
Fang Xuan is an exception: he arrives in the world physically rather than through soul transmigration and cannot awaken a Martial Soul. The Strongest Blade Drawing System allows him to cultivate Soul Power through flawless blade draws, treating his saber as his sole Martial Soul-equivalent until he gains the ability to copy others' spirits 1 2 89.
His copied Martial Souls initially differ sharply from ordinary ones. They cannot be called forth as weapons or projected externally; instead, they reside within him and imbue his blade draws with their attributes. As they evolve, they increasingly resemble genuine Martial Souls, culminating in external manifestation and Spirit Avatars after his Soul Sage breakthrough 5 6 169 248.
