Sinan Yao is one of the Riyao Family's heirs. The family controls ninety percent of the Heavenly Realm's overt technological core, and its technology-centered path is viewed uneasily by many cultivators despite its eventual convergence with cultivation. He possesses extensive technological survival measures and exceptional talent, making his treatment within Changning Immortal Academy politically complicated 6.

Before Xiang Tian's arrival, Sinan Yao resonated with the academy's Sword Comprehension Stone and absorbed one-tenth of its Sword Qi. He later emerged from Prodigy Class seclusion during the academy holiday to continue studying the stone 6.

When Xiang Tian shattered the Sword Comprehension Stone and absorbed its remaining Sword Intent, Sinan Yao accused him of monopolizing a resource meant for all students. He invoked the academy's principle that “the capable shall obtain,” then challenged Xiang Tian to a duel; the match was scheduled after the required two-week cooling-off period, with the Sword Intent as the demanded stake if Xiang Tian lost 7.

Personality

Sinan Yao is proud of both his Riyao inheritance and his own abilities. He resents the idea that Xiang Tian received special treatment through the Changning Immortal King, regarding him as a puppet backed by academy authorities rather than a worthy opponent 12.

His pride is tempered by a strong desire to prove himself fairly. While arguing with Ning Rong, he insists that he has not used his influence to bully others or seriously harmed classmates, and he is determined to show that he is Xiang Tian's equal despite the latter's backing 15.

His rivalry is intensified by his feelings for Ning Rong. He plans to defeat Xiang Tian publicly both to reclaim face and to win her favor, but her indifference leaves him dejected and further fuels his determination 15.

Sword Comprehension Stone Dispute

Sinan Yao's partial absorption of the Sword Comprehension Stone's Sword Qi establishes him as its foremost student beneficiary. Xiang Tian's complete refinement of the stone's Sword Intent deprives Sinan Yao of the opportunity he believed was his, prompting the formal challenge 6 7.

Duel with Xiang Tian

After preparing extensively and waiting all morning for Xiang Tian to arrive, Sinan Yao begins the duel with a green-dragon technique before escalating to his unreleased Divine Armor. He initially gains momentum through its shield and weapons, but Xiang Tian counters with an equally powerful armor and the unprecedented ability to wield sword intent from within it 16 17.

Sinan Yao's Level One Form fails to stop Xiang Tian's sword barrage. His Divine Armor disintegrates, he is left bloodied and unconscious, and Xiang Tian tells him that the Sword Intent is stronger in Xiang Tian's hands 17 18.

Aftermath

Sinan Yao and Ning Rong are retrieved by their respective families after the academy incident 19. Later, he watches Xiang Tian's Spirit Pressure Tower attempt and recognizes that his former status meant little to his rival; his family then orders him to defer to Xiang Tian 43.

He is excluded from the academy's Dao Sea delegation at both his own and Xiang Tian's request, as he cannot bring himself to face Xiang Tian after their conflict 44.
