Background
Madara and his younger brother, Izuna, were central figures of the Uchiha during the Warring States Period. Izuna served as Madara’s emotional anchor, strategist, and martial support before dying in battle after giving Madara his Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara’s enduring guilt over failing to protect Izuna shapes many of his later decisions. 43
After leaving Konoha, Madara called on the Uchiha Clan to follow him, but none did. He abandoned responsibility for the clan after his battle with Hashirama, yet still considered himself bound by his promise to Izuna to protect the Uchiha legacy. 134
By the novel’s early events, Madara lived in the Graveyard of Mountains in the Land of Frost. He used White Zetsu’s shapeshifting and subterranean movement to gather intelligence across the shinobi world while concealing his weakened, aged body. 27
Appearance
In his aged state, Madara’s formerly black hair had turned gray-white, his posture had stooped, and wrinkles marked his face. He commonly relied on a scythe as a walking stick. 134 167
- Sharp, blade-like eyes, shown with Three Tomoe Sharingan before he recovered the Rinnegan. 167 168
- Wore formal Uchiha clan-leader robes when expecting to meet Seisui. 134
- Restored his youth and physical vigor through the Box of Paradise and a later life-force technique. 197 242
- His restored Rinnegan appears as purple, ripple-patterned eyes. 197
Personality
Madara is intensely proud and refuses to accept a subordinate position, even before Seisui. His desire to regain the Rinnegan is driven as much by the need to establish authority as by battlefield strength. 160
His attachment to Izuna is profound and possessive. Madara interprets Seisui’s resemblance to Izuna, mastery of Muramasa, swordsmanship, and chakra as evidence that Seisui may be Izuna’s reincarnation; this belief makes Seisui both an ideal ally and a personal obsession. 43 49
He is ruthless toward subordinates and tools. He treats Black Zetsu as expendable labor, implants a controlling curse seal into Obito’s heart after saving him, and intends to traumatize Obito into accepting the Moon Eye Plan. 56 167
Madara nevertheless changes under pressure. Seisui’s growth pushes him beyond his self-imposed isolation and forces him to accept imperfect methods of restoring his power, including the Box of Paradise and Izuna’s resurrection. 222 239
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Madara’s Rinnegan grants him high-level Six Paths abilities and the capacity to directly challenge other elite dōjutsu users.
- Used Shinra Tensei to shatter the space barrier supporting Kamui’s spatial distortion, disrupting Obito’s attack. 197
- Used Rinbo: Hengoku against Tobirama; its clones forced Tobirama and Izuna to expend large amounts of chakra on defense. 252 253
- Can use the Preta Path to absorb chakra, though it could not remove Magatsuhi’s soul-bound black flames from Izuna. 252
- Could potentially use the Human Path to extract Izuna’s soul for precise treatment of Magatsuhi’s flames. 252
- Uses Rinnegan genjutsu to show Obito detailed visions of Seisui’s battles and influence. 199
Susanoo and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
Madara can manifest a Complete Body Susanoo and augment it with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
- Summoned his Complete Body Susanoo to confront Hashirama during the battle in the Land of Water. 247
- Reworked his Armored Susanoo by replacing the Nine-Tails with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 251
- Summoned the Demonic Statue during the battle against Tobirama and Obito. 251 252
- His Complete Body Susanoo could be broken apart by Obito’s intensified Dual Kamui spatial turbulence. 253
Genjutsu and Dōjutsu Control
Madara possesses exceptional ocular-genjutsu skill and uses it for large-scale political control.
- Hypnotized regional Daimyō alongside elite Uchiha forces in an alternate dimension, securing their resources for the merged Senju–Uchiha faction. 367
- Helped seize control of major villages’ Kage through genjutsu and dōjutsu alongside Izuna and Obito. 243
- Blocked Indra’s Mangekyō-based genjutsu with his Rinnegan. 325
Combat Analysis
Madara rapidly analyzes unfamiliar techniques and adjusts his fighting style to counter them.
- Correctly deduced the separate functions of Obito’s Kamui eyes: intangibility and interdimensional movement through the right eye, localized spatial distortion through the left. 193
- Identified that breaking Kamui’s spatial barrier would nullify its offensive distortion, then executed the required countermeasure under attack. 197
- His experience, taijutsu, and Rinnegan mastery allowed him to suppress Obito in direct combat despite Dual Kamui’s defensive advantage. 197
Life-Force Restoration
Madara’s body requires unusually potent vitality to sustain its Power of All Things.
- Absorbed the Box of Paradise’s power to restore much of his lost vitality. 196 197
- Completed a forbidden life-force technique that returned him to youth and restored his combat strength. 242
- Earlier attempts to offset his aging through ordinary chakra, vitality techniques, or White Zetsu absorption were considered inadequate for his body’s demands. 160 196
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scythe — Used as a walking stick during his aged period. 167
- Box of Paradise — A Sage of Six Paths-era tool that Madara opened and absorbed to restore vitality and recover the Rinnegan. 196 197
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Summoned and integrated into his Susanoo-based combat methods. 251
- Uchiha Stone Tablet — The foundation of Madara’s belief in the Moon Eye Plan and the Rinnegan’s legacy. 252
- White Zetsu network — His primary intelligence apparatus, used to monitor events throughout the shinobi world. 27
Relationships
- Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother whose death and sacrifice define Madara’s guilt; Madara ultimately resurrects him and entrusts him with planning their campaign against Tobirama. 43 205 243
- Uchiha Seisui — Initially observed as a gifted Uchiha; Madara later regards him as Izuna’s possible reincarnation, his ideal Moon Eye Plan candidate, and someone who must be freed from Tobirama’s influence. 49 56 199
- Obito Uchiha — Originally selected as a replaceable spokesperson and manipulated through a curse seal and Rin’s staged death; later becomes a dangerous rival and temporary ally. 167 197 199
- Black Zetsu — Intelligence gatherer and subordinate whom Madara overworks and distrusts; Black Zetsu privately resents Madara and contemplates betrayal. 56 161 167
- Tobirama Senju — Longstanding enemy associated with Izuna’s death. Madara considers Tobirama’s influence over Seisui intolerable and repeatedly seeks to kill him. 56 242 252
- Hashirama Senju — Historic rival and fellow legendary shinobi. Madara fights Hashirama during the raid on the Land of Water, treating him as the only opponent worthy of confronting directly. 247 251
- Orochimaru — A target of Madara and Izuna’s plans because of his knowledge of Hashirama Cells, vitality techniques, and Tobirama’s forbidden techniques. 222 235
Story Role / Major Arcs
Surveillance of Seisui
Madara monitors Seisui and Obito through White Zetsu. Seisui’s victories over Yashiro, his chakra, and his similarity to Izuna awaken Madara from his passive isolation and cause him to reconsider using Obito as his sole spokesperson. 27
Madara becomes convinced that Seisui may be Izuna’s chakra reincarnation after recognizing Izuna’s swordsmanship, Muramasa, Fire Release, and demeanor. He grows increasingly alarmed when Seisui displays Tobirama-derived Water Release and genjutsu. 43 49 56
Attempts to Influence Seisui
Madara initially seeks to draw Seisui to his side and sends him gifts, including the Nine-Tails Summoning Contract. He later decides not to immediately corrupt Seisui, believing the shinobi world’s harshness will eventually make Seisui receptive to the Moon Eye Plan. 93
As Seisui’s power continues to rise, Madara becomes concerned that Tobirama’s chakra and multiple bloodlines will destabilize him. He attempts to reclaim the Rinnegan and accelerate Obito’s growth to create a reliable assistant. 141 160
Manipulation and Loss of Obito
After Ōnoki nearly kills Obito, Madara saves him with the Demonic Statue’s life force, modifies his body, and places a controlling curse seal in his heart. He plans to use Rin’s death to awaken Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan and force him into the Moon Eye Plan. 167 178
Obito’s Dual Kamui and emotional awakening instead make him difficult to control. After Madara restores his own vitality through the Box of Paradise, the two clash over who will lead the plan for peace. 196 197
Alliance Against Seisui and Tobirama
Madara and Obito temporarily cooperate after recognizing Seisui as both Madara’s ideal candidate and the greatest obstacle to the Moon Eye Plan. Madara uses genjutsu to reveal Seisui’s military feats and political influence to Obito. 199
Madara resurrects Izuna through the Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu. Together with Obito, they interpret Seisui’s sealing as Tobirama’s attempt to possess or control him and prepare to intervene. 205 207 242
Raid on the Land of Water
After regaining youth and power through a life-force technique, Madara joins Izuna and Obito in taking control of other villages’ leadership and mobilizing a surprise attack on the Land of Water. Their stated aim is to rescue Seisui and eliminate Tobirama. 242 243
Madara battles Hashirama with Complete Body Susanoo and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path while Tobirama faces Izuna. When Tobirama defeats Izuna, Madara abandons restraint and turns his full hostility on his old rival. 247 251
Alternate-Dimension Counterpart
In the alternate dimension entered by Tobirama, Madara’s counterpart is part of a radically altered Senju–Uchiha history. Tobirama assigns him to hypnotize regional Daimyō and then declares his intention to make Madara the first Hokage, judging him more capable of leadership than Hashirama. 367
This counterpart later leads a campaign to conquer other shinobi villages while Tobirama and Izuno seek the remaining Tailed Beasts, intending to unify the shinobi world under Konoha to prevent future wars. 368
