Arc 18The Elbaf Expedition

Apophis and Kaido conquered Elbaf for its Adam Tree wood, then vanished into the dangerous sea near Laugh Tale. Longinus returned to Marine duty, protected Zephyr’s trainees from Weevil, and pursued Buggy to the Baratie, where he recognized Sanji as a Vinsmoke.

  • Apophis brought Franky to the moon, revealed Pluto’s Blueprint, and persuaded him to build a weakened Pluton as a deterrent against the Space Pirates.
  • Apophis and Kaido joined forces to conquer Elbaf and take its Adam Tree, battling Olaf and then fighting Longinus and Akainu before Apophis escaped with Kaido into another dimension.
  • Apophis and Kaido entered the final sea in ships built from Adam Tree wood, while Longinus found Mihawk ruling the ruined Sizkear Kingdom and took Perona with him.
  • Weevil attacked Zephyr’s trainee warship, severed Zephyr’s arm, and threatened the trainees before Longinus crushed Weevil’s weapon and blasted him away.
  • Longinus revealed that his Observation Haki had shown him a future in which the trainees died and Zephyr grieved, then returned to Marine Headquarters and agreed to help teach them.
  • Longinus investigated Buggy’s reported presence in the East Blue, protected Orange Town from hunger, and brought Smoker and the Marines to eat at the Baratie.
  • Longinus recognized Sanji as Vinsmoke Sanji and explained that he had held him as a baby, while Zeff and the chefs stood by Sanji as the Marines questioned his connection to Apophis.
  • Buggy’s crew stormed the Baratie and found Longinus, who announced that he had come specifically to capture Buggy, leaving the pirate terrified.
Chapters 431–455 Vol. 5 Read

Ch. 431You're Not the One at Fault; This World Is!

Apophis revealed that the Moon Base was holding off the Space Pirates and captured Franky to recruit him to build the Pluto. Franky refused, so Apophis had Enel take him along, confident he would soon change his mind.

  • Apophis asked Enel about the Moon Base, learned it was holding, and decided to make the Space Pirates understand fear.
  • Apophis brought Franky through a Space Gate, subdued his attacks, and revealed his identity.
  • Apophis told Franky that the World Government—not Franky—was to blame for Tom’s suffering and the injustice that followed.
  • Apophis showed Franky the Pluto’s Blueprint and asked him to build the warship.
  • Franky admired the blueprints but refused to help destroy the world, so Apophis left and ordered Enel to bring him along.
  • Enel welded his Golden Staff to Franky and carried him away.

Ch. 432The Story of an Invader's Difficult Escape

Apophis, Enel, and Franky traveled to the moon, where Apophis revealed his lunar base and confronted a group of Space Pirates. After easily destroying their base and scattering them, Apophis left Franky convinced of his strength.

  • Apophis and Enel brought Franky to the moon aboard the Ark Maxim, where robots identified Franky and granted him ordinary authority.
  • Apophis told Franky that his lunar base served as the first line of defense against threats from beyond the stars.
  • Enel carried Franky above the Fortress as Apophis approached a nearby alien base and dodged its powerful laser beams.
  • Apophis destroyed the base's energy structures with several slashes, terrifying the Space Pirates.
  • Enel explained that the attackers were weak vanguard forces, and Franky celebrated Apophis's victory with a rap.

Ch. 433The Poor, Weak, and Helpless Alien

Apophis learned that the Space Pirates were displaced survivors of a destroyed civilization and subdued them by surviving their attack and terrifying them. He warned Franky that the pirates threatened the world and claimed the Ancient Weapons had been destroyed, leaving Franky determined to build Pluton.

  • Apophis read Tangulas's memories and discovered that the Space Pirates had lost their homeworld and wandered through space before finding Native Star.
  • Several Space Pirates fired their weapons at Apophis, but he emerged from the flames unharmed.
  • Apophis used the Demon Blade and the Ring of Fear to frighten the pirates, killing nearly half of them and forcing the survivors to obey him.
  • Apophis returned to the fortress with the pirates and told Franky that the Ancient Weapons had been destroyed during an ancient war against invaders.
  • Franky remembered Pluton's Blueprint and excitedly volunteered to build Pluton.

Ch. 434Low-Fidelity Replica of Pluton

Apophis directed his researchers to develop combat robots and potions while Franky discovered the obstacles to building Pluton. He ordered Franky to create a weakened replica, then considered traveling to Elbaf to investigate the Ancient Stone Tablet.

  • Apophis ordered Enel to send the captured Space Pirates to mine ore without letting them die.
  • Judge reported that the researchers had developed two types of Combat Robots, and Miskina reported that Rage Potion Type I was ready while the Life Potion remained under research.
  • Judge celebrated the chance to surpass Vegapunk after Apophis and Enel left the laboratory.
  • Franky told Apophis that Pluton required scarce materials and an unfamiliar power system, leaving it with at most one-tenth of its combat power without that system.
  • Apophis told Franky to build Pluton with one-tenth of its power, intending to use its reputation to deter the Space Pirates.
  • Apophis wondered whether the Ancient Stone Tablet held the answer he sought and considered going to Elbaf.

Ch. 435Marine Chat Group

In Water Seven, Tom and Iceburg decided to conceal Pluto's Blueprint to protect Franky, while Longinus reported that the search for him had found nothing. Meanwhile, Sengoku warned the Navy chat group that Apophis was heading to meet Kaido and assigned White Ram and Akainu to investigate.

  • Tom and Iceburg concluded that Franky had taken Pluto's Blueprint and agreed to act as though they had never seen it rather than expose him to the government.
  • Longinus told Tom and Iceburg that the search for Franky had found no trace, and the two resolved to devote themselves to the Train Network project.
  • Longinus checked the Navy Office Chat Group, where Sengoku announced that Apophis was about to meet Kaido with his entire crew.
  • Sengoku explained that Apophis's broad network and past schemes made the meeting dangerous, while Akainu and White Ram volunteered to investigate.
  • Sengoku assigned White Ram and Akainu to the New World mission after White Ram offered to use his knowledge of Wano Country and Observation Haki.

Ch. 436Elbaf Offensive

Apophis arrived in Wano Country with his fleet and clashed with Kaido on Onigashima. He stopped the fight by revealing that he wanted to target Elbaf’s Giant King, though Kaido doubted the giants were strong.

  • Apophis’s fleet reached Wano Country, where the Beasts Pirates recognized him and King escorted him to Onigashima.
  • Kaido attacked Apophis as soon as he arrived, and their battle sent destructive shockwaves across the island and sea.
  • Apophis called off the fight because his followers would be killed and told Kaido he had come to propose another battle.
  • Apophis named the Giant King of Elbaf as their potential opponent, surprising the pirates, while Kaido dismissed the giants as weak.

Ch. 437Kaido's Reaction Time Is Too Long

Apophis told Kaido that Elbaf’s strength rivaled theirs and revealed that he wanted its Adam Tree to build a ship capable of reaching Laugh Tale. Kaido agreed to attack Elbaf, while Akainu and Longinus learned that Apophis and Kaido’s fleets had vanished and began considering their possible destination.

  • Apophis warned Kaido that Elbaf, led by Olaf the Giant King, was stronger than Wano Country and difficult to conquer.
  • Kaido realized Apophis had sent Bullet away with an Eternal Pose that belonged to him, but calmed down when Apophis offered to share it.
  • Apophis explained that the route to Laugh Tale crossed dangerous waters that damaged his ships, and that they needed Adam Tree wood from Elbaf.
  • Kaido decided to conquer Elbaf and struck Onigashima so hard that half the island sank beneath the sea.
  • Sengoku informed Akainu and White Ram that Apophis and Kaido’s fleets had disappeared from Wano Country after their monitoring warships were knocked unconscious.
  • Longinus listed the fleets’ possible targets, and Akainu chose to head first to Whitebeard’s territory.

Ch. 438Kaido, the Teammate Killer

Apophis and Kaido’s pirates attacked Elbaf to obtain Adam Tree, but negotiations collapsed when Kaido and the Giant King Olaf eagerly began fighting. As Kaido and Olaf battled and Kaido unleashed a destructive blast, Apophis decided to hurry gathering Adam Tree rather than risk joining the fight.

  • Olaf awoke to news that at least ten thousand pirates had landed on Elbaf and led the giants toward the harbor.
  • Apophis told the Giant King’s party that the pirates wanted enough Adam Tree to leave, but Kaido attacked Apophis and Olaf struck the prophet aside as both rejected a peaceful resolution.
  • Kaido and Olaf exchanged powerful blows, and Kaido transformed into a dragon as the giants debated whether to eat him or tame him.
  • Kaido fired a devastating beam that split the harbor and killed everyone caught along its path, prompting Olaf to attack him in rage.
  • Kaido blocked Olaf’s axe with his hardened scales, rose in half-dragon form, and charged back into the fight while Apophis judged that Kaido’s endurance could decide the battle.
  • Apophis decided to gather Adam Tree quickly because he expected anyone who joined Kaido and Olaf’s battle to be beaten to death.

Ch. 439The Diligent Lumberjack—Apophis

Apophis cut down the Ancient War Tree on Elbaf and began chopping it into sections to transport, while Enel and Wyper held off the giants. Aboard the Moby Dick, Longinus and Sakazuki confronted Whitebeard, then revealed that Apophis and Kaido were headed for Elbaf.

  • Apophis fought through the giants as Enel and Wyper cleared a path to the Ancient War Tree.
  • Apophis repeatedly slashed the tree until it fell into the sea, revealing a nearly two-thousand-meter Adam Tree.
  • Apophis ordered the pirates to drag the tree from the sea and began chopping it into fifty sections.
  • On the Moby Dick, Marco and Whitebeard discussed recent upheavals, including Bullet, the Revolutionary Army, Kaido, and Apophis.
  • Whitebeard detected Longinus and Sakazuki approaching, and he redirected their conversation after clashing with Longinus.
  • Longinus told Whitebeard that Apophis and Kaido were headed for Elbaf, then departed with Sakazuki.

Ch. 440Schrödinger's Kaido

Apophis and Kaido agreed to team up against Elbaf’s Giant King, while Apophis prepared to test the arriving Marine Admirals. The battle remained unresolved as Longinus and Akainu reached Elbaf and moved to choose their opponents.

  • Apophis warned Kaido that Akainu and Longinus were approaching Elbaf, and Kaido eagerly welcomed the chance to fight them.
  • Apophis persuaded Kaido to join forces against the Giant King, but Kaido accidentally struck Apophis with his club before they charged into battle.
  • Queen convinced Jack and the Beasts Pirates to leave, while Enel and the others carried the Adam Tree away.
  • Longinus and Akainu flew to Elbaf and saw the casualties from the battle; Longinus realized the Giant King was about to fall.
  • Apophis warned that the Marines had arrived as Longinus and Akainu descended, and Longinus asked Akainu to choose an opponent while Akainu approached Kaido.

Ch. 441Molten Beast

Akainu and Kaido fought fiercely while Longinus and Apophis staged an equally destructive battle on Elbaf. After a day and a night, the Giant King joined the fight, but Apophis called off the retreat and escaped with Kaido through an alternate dimension.

  • Akainu confronted Kaido, who revealed that he planned to use Elbaf’s Adam Tree to build a ship and reach Laugh Tale.
  • Longinus and Apophis exchanged powerful attacks, convincing the watching giants that they were fighting to the death.
  • Akainu unleashed Great Explosion and repeatedly blasted Kaido, who urged him to keep attacking.
  • After a day and a night, the recovering Giant King charged back into battle, but Apophis ordered Kaido to leave.
  • Apophis pulled Kaido into an alternate dimension and taunted Akainu to chase them.

Ch. 442Advance on Laugh Tale?

After Kaido and Apophis conquered Elbaf and announced their plan to reach Laugh Tale, news of their challenge spread through the pirate world and alarmed the Marines. Sengoku revealed that the World Government intended for the pair to become lost in the waters around Laugh Tale, while Akainu questioned why the government wanted those waters explored.

  • Longinus declined the Giant King's invitation to stay for a postwar banquet, warning that the sea was about to be thrown into turmoil.
  • A pirate crew learned from the newspaper that Kaido and Apophis had conquered Elbaf and planned to challenge Laugh Tale.
  • Doflamingo dismissed Pica's suggestion that they join Apophis's fleet, saying Laugh Tale would be difficult to find.
  • Douglas Bullet rejected the idea of surpassing Roger by reaching Laugh Tale and planned instead to defeat Marine Headquarters with the power of God's Weapon.
  • Kuina continued her sword training after Hiyori told her that Apophis and Kaido had taken Elbaf's Adam Tree, and she vowed to become strong enough to defeat Apophis.
  • Sengoku told Akainu that the World Government expected the pair to become lost in Laugh Tale's waters, where even Eternal Poses gave incorrect directions, and refused to explain why the government wanted to explore them.

Ch. 443Sizkear Kingdom

After Apophis and Kaido vanished into the final sea, the world gradually forgot the Four Emperors. In 1513, Longinus tracked Edward Weevil to the Sizkear Kingdom, where he met Hawk Eyes Mihawk in a castle haunted by something still lurking inside.

  • Apophis used the ships being built from Adam Tree to prepare for exploring the unknown sea, and he and Kaido entered the Grand Line’s final sea three months later.
  • As months passed without news from them, people lost interest, and other New World forces began claiming their former territories.
  • A Marine commodore told Longinus that Edward Weevil had slaughtered people and apparently ended the Sizkear Kingdom’s long war, while armed baboons had driven off the Navy.
  • Longinus arrived at the ruined island, knocked out the baboons with his Conqueror’s Haki, and continued to the central castle.
  • Longinus found Hawk Eyes Mihawk seated in the castle and learned that Mihawk had taken control of the Sizkear Kingdom.
  • A brutal roar and a little girl’s sob came from deeper in the castle, and Mihawk said its previous master had left troublesome things behind.

Ch. 444Ghost Princess

Longinus and Hawk Eyes fought through the stitched monsters in an ancient castle and met Perona, who explained that Edward Weevil had killed her parents and transformed the island’s people. Longinus learned that Weevil’s Stitch-Stitch Fruit could control bodies remotely, leaving him to consider whether the ability helped Weevil defeat Zephyr.

  • Hawk Eyes and Longinus killed the stitched monsters that attacked them inside the castle.
  • Perona appeared and tried to attack Longinus with her Negative Ghosts, but his aura frightened them away.
  • Longinus learned that Perona’s parents had been killed by a man she called the big fat man, whom he identified as Edward Weevil.
  • Perona explained that Weevil had turned everyone into monsters using the Stitch-Stitch Fruit, which could stitch bodies together and control them remotely.
  • Longinus suspected that Weevil had used the fruit’s remote-control ability to defeat Zephyr.

Ch. 445Ghost Butler

Longinus encountered Perona at Hawk Eyes’s castle and took her along as a Ghost Butler. He then joined Zephyr’s training-camp voyage, where he agreed to help teach the Marine trainees and Zephyr warned him not to underestimate Apophis and Kaido.

  • Hawk Eyes confronted Perona, who panicked and called him a pervert while Longinus teased them both.
  • Longinus prepared to leave, but Perona offered to serve as his Ghost Butler and he agreed to take her along.
  • Perona remembered that her body was in the basement and sent her spirit through the floor to retrieve it.
  • Longinus boarded the trainee warship at Marine Headquarters, where Ain and Binz welcomed his return.
  • Longinus told Zephyr that the fall of two Four Emperors had eased pressure on the New World and that he wanted to help teach the next generation.
  • Zephyr warned that Apophis and Kaido would not remain trapped in the sea forever, and Longinus agreed to help teach the trainees.

Ch. 446Scrap, Don't Touch My Students!

Zephyr and Longinus faced Edward Weevil after his pirate crew attacked their trainee warship, and Zephyr intervened to protect Ain and Binz. Weevil recovered from Zephyr’s punch and charged back toward him.

  • Weevil chose to attack the Marine trainee warship and killed a pirate crew member who questioned him.
  • Longinus identified Weevil as a vicious pirate he had been tracking, and Zephyr decided to confront him because he believed he had once let Weevil go.
  • Weevil broke free of Binz’s vines and swung his Naginata at Binz and Ain.
  • Zephyr caught Weevil’s blade and punched him through the pirate ship, protecting his students.
  • The pirates recognized Zephyr and Longinus as Marine Admirals and considered fleeing, but Weevil charged back at Zephyr, complaining that the punch had hurt.

Ch. 447Zephyr's Weakness (Third Update)

Zephyr fought Weevil aboard a Marine warship while teaching his trainees the Rokushiki techniques, but Weevil exploited Zephyr’s concern for his students. Longinus intervened to protect Zephyr and the trainees, then unleashed a devastating punch that blasted Weevil and a distant island.

  • Zephyr demonstrated Iron Body, Tempest Kick, Paper Art, Finger Pistol, and Shave combined with Iron Body as he fought Weevil, while Longinus watched and considered the World Government’s plans to weaken Marine Headquarters.
  • Zephyr struck Weevil with Rokuogan, and Weevil’s Naginata cut off his left arm before the weapon turned toward Zephyr’s trainees under the control of stitching threads.
  • Longinus stepped in front of Zephyr, caught the Naginata blade, and crushed it before it could reach the trainees.
  • Weevil detached parts of his body and sent them toward Longinus, who answered with a shockwave punch that blasted Weevil and sank a small island nearly a thousand meters away.

Ch. 448Zephyr's Change

Longinus explained to Zephyr that he had foreseen a future in which Edward Weevil killed the trainees and severed Zephyr’s arm, prompting him to hunt Weevil and change that outcome. Back at Marine Headquarters, Zephyr seemed relieved, while Longinus returned to his villa and found it smelling musty and decayed.

  • Zephyr asked Longinus why he had joined the trainee voyages and shown such hatred toward Weevil, and Longinus revealed that his Observation Haki had shown him a fragment of a disastrous future.
  • Longinus told Zephyr that he had foreseen the trainees dying and Zephyr weeping in the rain while holding his severed arm, and Zephyr took comfort in the possibility that the future had changed.
  • After the warship returned to Marine Headquarters, Garp teased Zephyr about finding a woman, and the two launched into a fight that Longinus called a friendly exchange.
  • Ain asked whether anyone should stop Zephyr and Garp, and Longinus said their scuffle would help Zephyr let go of his burdens.
  • Longinus returned to his villa, noticed a musty, decaying smell, made tea, and sat down to rest.

Ch. 449Clown... Emperor, Buggy?

Longinus tested Perona’s Negativity Ghost ability and concluded that powerful souls and Haki could shorten its effects but not fully negate rule-based abilities. After returning to Marine Headquarters, he learned that a pirate claiming to be the Clown Emperor Buggy had surrendered in Loguetown.

  • Longinus confronted Perona about frightening away a cleaner, agreed to provide her with toys, and asked her to use her ability on him.
  • Perona’s Negativity Ghost briefly affected Longinus, and he determined that his soul’s strength shortened the effect from about thirty seconds to roughly three.
  • Longinus had Perona try again while he covered himself in Armament Haki, and he quickly broke free but concluded that Haki could not completely prevent the ability’s effects.
  • After two months away on patrol, Longinus returned to Marine Headquarters and heard that Bullet’s crew had been wiped out by the Red Hair Pirates, though Bullet escaped.
  • Hina relayed Smoker’s report from Loguetown that a former senior officer of the Roger Pirates had surrendered under the name Clown Emperor Buggy.

Ch. 450Smoker: Apply to Launch a Buster Call Against the Buggy Pirates!

Longinus learned that Buggy had become the focus of Navy attention and ordered the East Blue branches to find him while he investigated Bullet and the Red Hair Pirates. On Beast Island, Buggy mistook his crew’s admiration for proof of his own elaborate plan and stayed in hiding.

  • Smoker proposed a Buster Call against Buggy, but Longinus decided to search for him personally and told East Blue Marines not to act recklessly.
  • Longinus asked Hina to find Bullet’s whereabouts and track the Red Hair Pirates’ movements.
  • Hina reported that Bullet was last seen at Carnival City and the Red Hair Pirates were near the G5 Branch, leading Longinus to suspect both were heading toward the East Blue.
  • On Beast Island, Buggy blamed Red-Haired for his sneezing while Mohji and Cabaji praised his hidden strength and former place aboard the Pirate King’s ship.
  • Buggy told his crew that their hiding was a strategic ambush, and they wept as they vowed to follow him.

Ch. 451The Marines' Light

Longinus arrived in Loguetown, where Smoker and the Marines welcomed him and Tashigi eagerly met the celebrated Admiral. He reassured Smoker about the search for Buggy, praised his commitment to justice, and offered him a promotion to Commodore once the current matter was over.

  • Smoker learned that Admiral Shirozou was heading to Loguetown and told Tashigi that Longinus had always valued and guided Marines.
  • Longinus arrived on Minos, whose dramatic landing frightened townspeople and pirates, and the Marines cheered his arrival.
  • Smoker told Longinus that the Marines had not found any trace of Clown Emperor Buggy, and Longinus reassured him that the East Blue was safe while he was there.
  • Longinus revealed that reports about Smoker's conduct had accumulated but said his actions upheld justice and that he did not blame him for clashing with others.
  • Longinus acknowledged that Smoker had been unfairly held at Captain for years and offered to promote him to Commodore after the current matter was over.

Ch. 452Sea Restaurant Baratie

In Orange Town, Longinus fed the starving townspeople by catching a Sea King, then led the Marines back to sea to pursue the Buggy Pirates. When Smoker pointed out the Sea Restaurant Baratie ahead, Longinus agreed to take the whole crew there for lunch.

  • The mayor told Longinus and Smoker that the Buggy Pirates had stolen all the town’s food, and Longinus refused to feed the townspeople by taking supplies from his soldiers.
  • Longinus dove into the sea and returned with a thirty-meter Sea King, enough to feed the town for half a month.
  • Longinus urged the Marines to capture the Buggy Pirates before they could harm another town, and the warship left Orange Town.
  • Longinus told Tashigi that pirates would persist as long as the sea existed and mentioned the Train Network Plan underway on the Grand Line.
  • Smoker pointed out the Sea Restaurant Baratie, and Longinus agreed to bring all the soldiers there for lunch.

Ch. 453Vinsmoke Sanji

Smoker and Longinus arrived at the Baratie with a Marine force, unsettling the restaurant’s former pirates. When Longinus recognized Sanji by his full name, the boy froze, and Zeff realized that the refined Marine was the legendary admiral Shirozou Longinus.

  • Sanji and Patty argued over their roles in the kitchen before a chef announced that a wealthy beauty wanted to order.
  • The cooks and customers panicked when they learned that Smoker and a Marine warship had arrived, but Smoker told Hakusa and the others that they were there to eat.
  • Smoker seated Longinus by the window, and Sanji came out to take their order before flirting with Tashigi.
  • Longinus asked Sanji whether his full name was Vinsmoke Sanji, leaving the boy stunned.
  • Zeff spotted Longinus through the kitchen doorway and identified him as the Marine Headquarters admiral Shirozou Longinus.

Ch. 454Longinus: I Held You When You Were Little (Third Update)

Longinus recognized Sanji as a member of the Vinsmoke Family and explained that he had held him as a baby, while Smoker feared Sanji was tied to the Four Emperor Apophis. The confrontation at the restaurant eased, but Sanji rejected his family identity and the chefs learned how dangerous the name behind it was.

  • Zeff warned the chefs not to provoke Longinus, recalling that he had once seen Longinus sink an island with his physical strength.
  • Sanji confronted Longinus over knowing the name Sanji, prompting Zeff and the chefs to rush into the dining hall as the Marines stood to face them.
  • Smoker identified Sanji as a Vinsmoke and suspected he served Apophis, but Longinus calmed the Marines and chefs and told everyone to sit down.
  • Longinus said he had held Sanji when he was about one year old and recognized the Vinsmoke features, though Sanji did not remember him.
  • Sanji said he had never shared his brothers’ path, and Longinus expressed regret that the Vinsmoke Family had fallen into darkness.
  • Zeff explained that Apophis was one of the Four Emperors, while the chefs affirmed that Sanji was still their ship’s cook regardless of his identity.

Ch. 455Buggy's Mental Breakdown

Buggy led his starving crew to raid the Baratie, only to find it filled with Marines and face Smoker and Admiral Longinus. Longinus said he had come personally because of Buggy’s supposed status among the Roger Pirates, leaving Buggy terrified and in tears.

  • Buggy’s pirates caught a rabbit, but Buggy threw it away after hearing that the Baratie restaurant was nearby and ordered his crew to seize it.
  • Buggy’s crew burst into the Baratie and found more than a hundred Marines, while Smoker recognized them and confronted Buggy.
  • Longinus introduced himself as a Marine Headquarters Admiral who had come specifically for Buggy.
  • Smoker claimed Buggy was a top officer of the Roger Pirates, and Longinus said he had chosen to deal with Buggy personally instead of ordering a Buster Call.
  • Buggy’s crew and the Baratie’s customers reacted with shock as Buggy broke down in fear.
