Background / History

Esdeath's father taught her that only the strong survive. After northern Foreigners killed her father and the rest of her tribe during one of her hunting trips, she became the tribe's sole survivor and lived by hunting in the snowfields. Her years of isolation made her wary, highly self-reliant, and curious about the world beyond the ice. 2 9

She first met Lilith while returning from a hunt. Although Lilith's unnatural appearance initially provoked both suspicion and a flicker of killing intent, Esdeath chose curiosity over violence and brought her back to the abandoned settlement. 2 3

With the snowfield's prey dwindling, Esdeath invited Lilith to leave with her. She taught Lilith to hunt, treated her as a younger sister despite Lilith's objections, and departed the snowfield carrying her scimitar. 6 7 8

At Lilith's suggestion, Esdeath joined the Imperial Army to develop her combat skills and kill northern Foreigners. Her individual strength rapidly earned her promotion, culminating in her becoming the Empire's youngest general. 9 12

Minister Honest recruited Esdeath after learning that she had attained generalship without an Imperial Arm. At the Imperial Capital, she accepted the Essence of the Demon, becoming an ice-wielding Imperial Arms user and an increasingly central figure in the Empire's military power. 13 16
