Background / History
The movement began among farmers facing starvation who banded together to seize food. It later grew beyond that original purpose. Lilith considered it corrupt, while Nacita recognized that its actions could threaten ordinary citizens despite its stated opposition to Imperial tyranny 6 20.
Nacita defected from the Imperial Army with her subordinates and joined the rebels. Her leadership rapidly expanded the movement: within two years, it had captured several Imperial cities. Her growing influence also brought her into conflict with others in the organization, who pushed her away from its center of power. She founded Night Raid, an assassination unit composed largely of Imperial Arms users 20 22 23.
Organization and Allies
- Nacita — Defected with her unit, expanded the army and commanded its assault on the Imperial Capital. She wanted to replace the Empire but knew the Revolutionary Army's own leadership included people with ulterior motives 20 22 77 106.
- Night Raid — Nacita's assassination unit targeted Imperial officials and combatants. During the final campaign, it worked to weaken the capital's defenses and draw General Budou away from the front 22 43 76 77.
- Anning Dao — Its planned eastern uprising formed part of the Revolutionary Army's multi-front strategy. Night Raid was sent to kill Bolic, an Imperial spy positioned to take control of the religious organization 43.
- Western Foreigners — Allied with the army to attack the Empire's border and limit the troops available for redeployment against the rebels 23 43.
- Sympathetic city officials — Officials won over in advance were expected to open city gates during the army's march on the capital 43.

| Expansion after Nacita's defection | 22–23 | The army moved beyond small towns and captured multiple cities within two years 22 23. |
| Capture of a city | 33 | Local officials opened the gates; the corrupt city lord was executed. The rebels then retreated behind the walls when the Imperial Army arrived, producing a stalemate 33. |
| Multi-front offensive | 43 | Plans called for Anning Dao to rise in the east, western Foreigners to attack the border, and the Revolutionary Army to advance from the south 43. |
| Siege of the Imperial Capital | 75–80 | Budou initially held a key pass. After he returned to the capital, more than 200,000 rebel troops surrounded the city; Anning Dao's arrival and Imperial defections brought the surrounding force to roughly one million 75 76 77 80. |
| Breach of the capital | 83–86 | Despite severe losses to Esdeath's freezing attacks, the army pressed forward. It concentrated its assault on the east gate, using Earth Dragons, and later breached another gate while under fire from the Guardian God Machine 83 84 85 86. |
| Renewed advance | 94 | The destruction of the Guardian God Machine and news of Ozneth's death prompted the army to charge into the city 94. |
| Defeat | 101–105 | Lilith raised fallen soldiers as infectious Blood Slaves, transformed Nacita into a vampire and killed other commanders. With its command broken, the army fled; Lilith enclosed the capital with an ice wall, preventing its escape 101 104 105. |
Aftermath
More than half of the Revolutionary Army's upper ranks had also been assassinated. Nacita gave Lilith a list of faction leaders and ostensibly loyal officials she considered threats to a better government; Lilith understood that Nacita had arranged the deaths within the army's leadership 106.
The Night Empire subsequently replaced the old Imperial order. It did not honor the Revolutionary Army's alliance with the Western Foreigners and drove them back 107.
