Background / History

Isshiki was betrayed by Kaguya and fed to the Ten-Tails, which consumed most of his body. He survived by shrinking his remaining body with a dōjutsu, then burrowed into the monk Jigen’s brain and took control of him. The resulting body was only a flawed Vessel, forcing him to suppress his immense data and remain hidden for over a thousand years. During that time, he witnessed Kaguya’s rise, the birth of Hagoromo and Hamura, and Kaguya’s sealing by her sons. 165 173

His long concealment softened neither his goal nor his sense of superiority: Isshiki intends to feed an Ōtsutsuki to his privately raised Ten-Tails, evolve it into a Divine Tree, and drain the planet’s Natural Energy. The fragility of Jigen’s body, however, makes every serious battle a trade of lifespan for temporary power. 172 175

Jigen first approaches Yahiko as a potential Vessel and gives him Karma. Yahiko accepts the power only to protect Nagato, knowing that using it will kill him; Jigen instead sees Nagato’s Rinnegan-bearing body as a more promising future candidate. 165 166

After Kaedeji exposes and obstructs him, Jigen begins actively seeking scientific help. He recruits Orochimaru to cultivate a perfect Vessel, provides Ōtsutsuki historical and biological knowledge, and approves Orochimaru’s modified subject Tenzō as a long-term Vessel candidate—though Tenzō requires further adjustment. 175 177 178

Madara and Nagato later force Jigen into a prolonged battle that exploits his host body’s cracks. He escapes by releasing his Ten-Tails, then establishes Kara to serve the Ōtsutsuki and distribute divine techniques to its members. 208 209 214

Jigen attacks Mount Myōboku for its prophecy-related power, kills the Great Toad Sage, captures Jiraiya, and later captures Ōnoki. He intends to turn both captives into Divine Tree People and use their potential divine techniques for Kara’s expansion. 228 234 235

Jigen is cold, calculating, and fundamentally contemptuous of the planet’s inhabitants. He treats humans as inferior resources or tools, but his thousand years among them have taught him enough etiquette and pragmatism to negotiate when it benefits his plans. 165 173

His supreme priority is planting the Divine Tree. He will sacrifice allies, Vessels, worlds, or even his own life if doing so advances that objective.
