Background / History

Madara lived in seclusion at the Mountain Graveyard in the Land of Iron during Konoha year 40. Nearing seventy, he remained mentally vigorous but was searching for a successor capable of inheriting his will. None of the Uchiha active on the battlefield initially met his standards. 49

His survival after the Valley of the End was deliberate. Madara challenged Hashirama partly to obtain Hashirama’s cells, then staged his own death as part of a longer plan. The transplanted flesh extended his lifespan and contributed to the eventual awakening of his Rinnegan. 54 83

Madara developed the Eye of the Moon Plan: gather the nine Tailed Beasts, revive the Ten-Tails, and cast Infinite Tsukuyomi. He concealed its central requirements—including that the Rinnegan was his and that it was needed to control the Ten-Tails—from Kaedeji, intending to reserve those secrets for his chosen successor. 55

To secure his own future revival, Madara removed his Rinnegan and transplanted it into the young Nagato Uzumaki. He expected Nagato to eventually use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to restore him. 53 203
