Background / History
Nagato is an Uzumaki descendant whose parents were killed by Konoha ninja. His first known activation of the Rinnegan occurred during that attack, when he killed the Konoha ninja present in a rage 81. The loss left him deeply hostile toward Konoha and vulnerable to Danzō's attempts to recruit and manipulate him 80.
Jiraiya concealed Nagato in the Land of Rain and intended to train him for three years until he could survive independently. Nagato trained alongside Yahiko and Konan, whose complementary strengths gave the trio a means of surviving outside the Five Great Nations 80. Though initially indecisive and timid, he consistently placed his companions' safety above his own.
When Danzō, Orochimaru, and the reanimated Kaedeji attacked the group, Nagato drew upon increasingly dangerous Rinnegan powers. He summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and prepared to permanently seal his enemies with the Nine Phantom Dragons Seal, accepting severe personal costs to protect Yahiko and Konan 103 104. Kaedeji nevertheless captured Konan, leaving Nagato and Yahiko unable to stop him 105.
After Yahiko returned, the group established Akatsuki. Nagato became one of its central leaders, using his Rinnegan to support the organization's expansion and to pursue the One's Own Life Reincarnation Technique 114 119. Yahiko's later death shattered Nagato emotionally; he immediately attempted to revive him, despite the danger and unknown price of using resurrection-type dōjutsu 173 174.
Appearance
Nagato is a red-haired Uzumaki with the distinctive concentric ripple pattern of the Rinnegan. After Yahiko's death, he is repeatedly described as pale, gaunt, and increasingly severe in demeanor 200 220.
- Red hair, identifying him visually as an Uzumaki descendant 220
- Rinnegan with immense visible dōjutsu pressure 172
- Often appears exhausted after techniques that consume chakra or life force 114 276
- His Sage Mode manifests facial patterns and raised features around his face 203
Personality
Nagato began as an uncertain but deeply compassionate survivor. He was easily shaken by the burden of the Rinnegan and by unresolved grief over his parents, while Yahiko's decisiveness helped compensate for his hesitation 80.
His defining trait is devotion to his companions. He offers himself to Kaedeji in exchange for Konan's release and later becomes desperate enough to risk a resurrection technique for Yahiko 104 173. Each failure to protect them intensifies his belief that he needs greater power.
After Yahiko's death, Nagato becomes colder, more radical, and increasingly convinced that only he can lead the Ninja World toward peace. He adopts a god-like self-image while remaining focused on ending the systems of war and exploitation represented by Hanzō, Danzō, and Kaedeji 200 201.
Madara's revelation that Nagato's Rinnegan had been transplanted into him as a child destabilizes his belief that he was uniquely chosen by prophecy. Nagato ultimately rejects the idea that the eyes define his purpose, choosing to continue pursuing peace on his own terms 203.
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato's Rinnegan grants him vast chakra control, sensory capability, and access to multiple Paths of dōjutsu.
- Naturally masters all five elemental transformations 80
- Detects chakra, movements, and subtle physical cues through his visual perception 114
- Can immobilize opponents through the Rinnegan's innate pressure alone 172
- Uses Almighty Push for omnidirectional repulsion and Banshō Ten'in for attraction 103 139
- Uses the Preta Path to absorb chakra and ninjutsu 200 220
- Extracts souls and memories through physical contact; he kills Danzō with this ability 105 200
- Uses Rinnegan Intimidation to bind targets under overwhelming dōjutsu pressure 201
- Eventually learns Space-Time Dōjutsu for travel across the Ninja World 273
Sage Mode
Nagato trains at Mount Myōboku and combines Natural Energy with the Rinnegan.
- Requires time to gather Natural Energy before activation 203
- Enhances his dōjutsu output enough to support techniques such as Chibaku Tensei 172 173
- Allows him to defeat Danzō before confronting Hanzō 201
- His Sage Mode is imperfect, leaving visible facial changes during activation 203
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
Nagato takes possession of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path during the battle against Danzō, Orochimaru, and Kaedeji 104.
- Summons the statue as a massive battlefield asset 103
- Uses it as support while preparing the Nine Phantom Dragons Seal 103
- Can employ it alongside summoning and sealing techniques 104
- Its use drains Nagato's life force, forcing him to recover afterward 114

- Intends to use a Divine Tree Person as a Heavenly Dao puppet 265
- Must continuously provide chakra and life force to sustain the proxy 273
- The Divine Tree Person Pain gives him a viable method of fighting Six Paths-level enemies 276
- Nagato considers acquiring five more suitable bodies to complete the Six Paths of Pain 265
Relationships
- Jiraiya — Teacher and early protector. Jiraiya hides in the Land of Rain to train Nagato into a self-sufficient ninja and later tries to prevent him from recklessly using resurrection techniques 80 174.

- Konan — Longtime companion and Akatsuki partner. Nagato repeatedly prioritizes rescuing or reviving her, including limiting his actions in Konoha to avoid delaying her resurrection 104 273.
