Ranking System

Background & History

The Demon Slayer Corps has existed for several centuries as an unrecognized organization operating largely outside public awareness. Its members conceal demon-related incidents and keep their bases hidden, since discovery by demons could lead to the organization’s destruction. 9 93 319

Tsugikuni Yoriichi’s introduction of Breathing Techniques greatly restricted demon activity over the following decades and marked a new era for the Corps. 48 52 The organization judges recruits by their willingness, disposition, and strength rather than their social background. 11

When the Scribe was accepted as the youngest member in Corps history, he demonstrated Sun Breathing before the Hashira and proposed a formalized hierarchy for assignments. Ubuyashiki Kagaya approved the reform, creating a ten-rank structure beneath the Hashira. 11 12

In an earlier crisis, Yoriichi and the Scribe were stripped of their identities as Corps swordsmen after failing to kill Muzan, allowing Tamayo to escape, and being connected to Katsumi’s demonization. Ubuyashiki Waya spared them from execution, and both departed after surrendering their Nichirin Blades. 37

The Corps later suffered a major assault when Muzan gathered demons and attacked its headquarters. Ubuyashiki Kōya coordinated the defense by ordering noncombatants to retreat and preventing the battle line from spreading too far; the Scribe’s arrival ultimately helped avert the Corps’ destruction. 48 50 51 52

After the Scribe returned, he imposed a four-month training camp focused on extreme conditioning, swordsmanship, endurance, and mental fortitude. The resulting increase in teamwork and combat ability allowed members to hunt demons more effectively, while Kanae Kocho, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Tomi Giyu rose to Hashira status. 123 124 125

Recruitment & Training

Final Selection

Candidates undergo Final Selection on Wisteria Mountain before becoming official Corps members. The Hand Demon’s long presence on the mountain exposed how an excessively powerful demon could distort the examination’s survival rate. 114

At the Scribe’s recommendation, high-ranking swordsmen began adjusting the number and strength of demons before each selection. Overly powerful demons are eliminated, while additional demons may be introduced if the mountain is underpopulated, keeping the trial dangerous without making it arbitrarily lethal. 180

Successful candidates select materials for their personal Nichirin Blades and have their physical measurements taken for Corps uniforms. 181

Corps Training

The Corps increasingly emphasizes coordinated group combat rather than relying exclusively on exceptional individual swordsmen. 116 125

Breathing Techniques

Breathing Techniques are the Corps’ primary combat system, granting swordsmen superhuman physical capabilities while remaining limited by their human bodies. 434

Nichirin Blades

Reform of the Corps

Kagaya accepts the Scribe’s proposal to establish a detailed ranking system, assigning difficult missions to appropriately capable swordsmen and reserving the most dangerous work for the Hashira. 11 12

Headquarters Assault

Muzan and Kokushibo locate and attack the Corps’ main base with a large demon force. The defenders endure major pressure until the Scribe arrives, rescues the Flame Pillar, destroys much of the demon army, and forces Muzan to withdraw. 49 50 51

Expansion of the Modern Corps

The Corps recruits and develops future Hashira and prominent swordsmen, including Kanae and Shinobu Kocho, Sanemi Shinazugawa, Genya Shinazugawa, Giyu Tomioka, Sabito, and the Tokito brothers. 106 109 114 115 125 157

Political Persecution

Crown Prince Ayu publicly brands the Corps as responsible for civilian abductions, distributes wanted lists identifying members and their relatives, and turns public opinion against the organization. Civilians report and arrest swordsmen’s families in exchange for rewards or the release of their own relatives. 435

The Corps struggles against an enemy it cannot simply defeat with Nichirin Blades: Ayu’s political influence, manipulated public sentiment, and human army threaten to disband an organization that has survived for centuries. 436 442

Siege of the Hideout

Ayu mobilizes an army of more than ten thousand people, including firearm squads, to encircle the Corps’ mountain base. The Hashira repel an initial volley, but the Corps is forced to retreat as soldiers divide into squads to capture the swordsmen alive. 444 447 449

Many members and their relatives are captured, interrogated, and stripped of information about Breathing Techniques and the Corps’ operations. 450 The Scribe later rescues imprisoned swordsmen, including Gyomei, Kyojuro, Amane Ubuyashiki, and Kanae Kocho, and releases their detained families. 470

Regrouping at Mt. Sagiri

Following the collapse of its former base, the Corps gathers former members, trainers, and active fighters at Mt. Sagiri. The organization adopts temporary seclusion while preparing its remaining strength for a decisive conflict. 472 471 473

When Muzan arrives at the new base, the Hashira, lower-ranked swordsmen, logistics personnel, retired members, and trainers enter the final battle together. 474

Demon Swordsmen

After the Corps’ fighters are severely defeated and many lose weapons or limbs, the Scribe proposes demonization as the only way for them to continue fighting. 502 503 506

Using his Rare Blood to accelerate the process, the Scribe demonizes the Corps’ members and forges new Nichirin Blades for them. Their transformation grants powerful demon bodies, Scars, and Blood Demon Arts while preserving their identities as demon slayers. 507 508
