Background / History

Early career and the Three Ninja

Jiraiya was already an elite Jonin in his youth. When the Third Hokage sought instructors for promising Academy students, Jiraiya selected Minato Namikaze after witnessing his shuriken practice and gave him guidance; Minato learned every ninjutsu Jiraiya showed him immediately 2.

He later fought beside Tsunade and Orochimaru against Hanzo of the Salamander during the conflict in the Land of Rain. Hanzo recognized the trio's strength and bestowed on them the title of Konoha's Three Ninja 77 509. In their early clash, Jiraiya was injured by Hanzo's Exploding Tag Array despite using Needle Jizo to shield himself 77.

Mentor to Uchiha Cheng and Naruto

Jiraiya repeatedly crossed paths with Uchiha Cheng before formally accepting him. He first offered Cheng discipleship conditional on passing a test, setting high standards rather than granting instruction outright 169. After Cheng and Naruto appealed to him, Jiraiya accepted both as disciples and revealed that he had prepared individualized training methods suited to their distinct Chakra traits 278.

His training methods were severe and unconventional. To force Cheng to attempt the Summoning Technique, he pushed Cheng and Naruto from a cliff; Cheng survived by summoning Toad Boss through a surge of Chakra 280. Jiraiya later taught Cheng the Rasengan, but deliberately left him to overcome its difficult training stages through self-reliance 307 308.

Jiraiya also protected Cheng directly. He tracked Cheng after learning he had left Nightless City with Uchiha Itachi, intervened before Itachi could kill him, and defeated Itachi to secure Cheng's escape 213. He similarly attempted to shield Cheng and Sasuke from Itachi and Kisame when both students were in poor condition 304 305.

Final investigation and death

After returning to Konoha with intelligence on Akatsuki's leader, Jiraiya volunteered to infiltrate Amegakure despite Tsunade's concern 509. He defeated Hanzo in their rematch, then encountered Nagato, Konan, and the reanimated Yahiko—his former students. Their confrontation revealed their resentment toward Konoha and Jiraiya's belief that he had failed to teach and protect them 510.

Jiraiya was killed fighting Nagato's Six Paths of Pain. Lord Fukasaku later recovered his body and one of Pain's bodies for Konoha's investigation 510 520. His final coded message was deciphered by Shikamaru as “without a true body,” providing a vital clue about Pain 521.

Personality

Jiraiya is loud, boastful, and frequently distracted by bathhouses, women, and material for his writing. He openly claims a preference for female disciples and is known for lecherous behavior, though Cheng and Naruto ultimately recognize that he does not cross the line with them 2 277 278.

Behind his unserious exterior, he is attentive to his students' potential. He designs training around their individual Chakra traits, expects them to surpass him, and uses dangerous methods only when he believes they will force growth 278 280 309. He is also fiercely protective: Cheng's disappearance prompts him to investigate personally, and he arrives in time to stop Itachi's attempted attack 213.
