A Primordial Spirit is the union of a person's mind and spirit, and is treated as part of what is commonly called the soul. Within the human Three Essences—Primordial Spirit, true qi, and vital essence—it is considered the foundation from which true qi and essence are cultivated and strengthened 727 991.

Unlike true qi and essence, which vary according to cultivation methods and encounters, Primordial Spirit itself is described as undivided. A person born with abundant spiritual foundation can consequently cultivate greater reserves of true qi and essence 727.

A Primordial Spirit that can exist tangibly is rare. It may arise when Yin and Yang Deities merge after reaching the Return to Truth stage, or through an abnormal method that forcibly cultivates spiritual power through a peerless mental technique 550.

Abilities & Limitations

Spiritual Projection and Combat

A sufficiently powerful Primordial Spirit can leave the body, perceive distant targets, enter spiritual worlds, and directly harm another person's mind and soul.

• A clash of Primordial Spirits can create an unseen spiritual world; failure in such a confrontation may result in annihilation of both body and soul 575.
• At perfection, a Primordial Spirit can release force through the eyes, halt and disperse lightning, and destroy physical objects at the cost of spiritual power 1157.
• Primordial Spirit attacks may consume enormous power against mentally resilient opponents, causing dizziness and pain in the user's ancestral aperture 852.
• Mind Link, jointly created by Jiang Dali and Wanwan, merges their Yin and Yang Deities to temporarily produce Primordial Spirit-level force 593.
• Mind Link requires the corresponding partner to be present and cooperative; it cannot be reliably used alone 593.

Possession

A True Return Realm expert can use a Primordial Spirit to seize or control another body.

• The target body must resonate with the possessor's essence, qi, and spirit 936.
• Possession is difficult against targets with powerful mental strength unless they willingly surrender their body 936.
• Jiang Dali uses the Hell Soul Swapping Scripture to infiltrate and control players' bodies before their consciousness can log out 936 968.
• Improper possession creates disharmony among the Three Essences, limiting recovery of strength and future advancement 1112.

Separation and Entrustment

A Primordial Spirit can be divided and placed into a compatible vessel, such as a Dharma artifact, Dharma Body, or statue.

• A separated portion can grant its vessel strength comparable to a Return to Origin Realm expert 802.
• Separation is primarily an emergency measure: it damages the original Primordial Spirit and lowers the user's strength 802.
• If an entrusted fragment is destroyed, the original owner may suffer irreparable damage 802.
• Di Ni's Primordial Spirit is entrusted within her adamantine-bones golden statue and is sustained through gathered Dragon Qi 674 677.

Vessels, Residual Spirits, and Recovery

A Primordial Spirit normally cannot remain in the world for long without protection from an exceptional treasure or suitable vessel.

• The true spirit is the final imprint of a Primordial Spirit—the remnant commonly understood as the soul 1128.
• Without sufficient spiritual energy, a true spirit is like rootless duckweed and will dissipate into heaven and earth 1128.
• The Realm Breaking Bead can preserve conscious spirits, residual obsessions, and pools of ownerless Primordial Spirit power 806.
• Jiang Dali can use Primordial Spirit power stored in the Realm Breaking Bead to recover spiritual injuries, but excessive absorption risks harming his own spirit 727.
• The Dali Fire Qilin Saber's sentience developed after absorbing latent, ownerless Primordial Spirits within the Realm Breaking Bead 620 793.

Notable Manifestations

• Fire Qilin — Jiang Dali absorbs a trace of its fallen Primordial Spirit, gaining altered internal-energy attributes, physical changes, and a trace of Qilin bloodline; the spirit's influence also threatens his thoughts and will 370 548.
• Xiang Yutian — His damaged residual Primordial Spirit survives inside the Evil Emperor's Sarira, initially submits to Jiang Dali, then attempts to seize Jiang Dali or Wanwan's body before being destroyed by their combined Mind Link 550 591 593.
• Di Ni — Her Primordial Spirit manifests through a golden statue alongside Dragon Qi, using an entrusted form powerful enough to suppress the Realm Breaking Bead 674.
• Heavenly Monk — His self-aware Primordial Spirit remains within a painting and is later housed in the Realm Breaking Bead, though it weakens over time 776 806.
• Blood Transformation Divine Venerable — Uses divided Primordial Spirit power in a Dharma Body statue; its ownerless spiritual power is later sealed inside the Realm Breaking Bead 802 806.
• Di Shitian — Escapes the destruction of his body as a weakened Primordial Spirit concealed within blood mist 1126.
• Sword Saint Dugu Jian — After his body is destroyed, only a sliver of Primordial Spirit remains; the Realm Breaking Bead preserves it before it is introduced into Guang Chengzi's immortal bone remnant 1128 1129.
