Background

Dongfang Bubai became the Sun Moon Divine Cult's leader after removing Ren Woxing's influence and elevating loyal subordinates. After acquiring the fragmented Sunflower Manual, however, Dongfang gradually abandoned political ambition in favor of martial cultivation, leaving much of the cult's administration to Yang Lianting. 156

The manual in Dongfang's possession had been seized from Mount Hua by an earlier Sun Moon Divine Cult leader. It was only part of a greater text: the Sunflower Manual had originally been written by a man and a woman as mutually restraining Qian and Kun volumes. 180 342

At Black Wood Cliff, Dongfang defeated Ren Woxing, Shangguan Yun, Xiang Wentian, and nearly killed Linghu Chong in a matter of breaths. Yang Wei—posing as Yang Lianting—then betrayed Dongfang, poisoned Dongfang with Seven Orifices Bone Melting Powder, and worked with the Left Alliance Aristocrats to seize the manual and the cult. 156
