Background

Zhunti was among the six foremost Great Powers who spent a century unsuccessfully contemplating Hongmeng Purple Qi. Seeking a new approach, he proposed bringing Kunpeng—holder of the seventh strand—into their discussion, but Yuanshi and Laozi rejected the idea as ineffective. He subsequently joined the others in seeking Wu Ming’s knowledge at Buzhou Mountain. 48

As one of the Western Saints alongside his senior brother Jieyin, Zhunti became burdened by vows and a debt of merit connected to their Saint positions. When Zhou Ming exposed the brothers’ attempt to gain more merit through a staged display of brotherly devotion, Zhunti accepted Zhou Ming’s guidance to keep swearing Great Vows to the Heavenly Dao, adding thirty-three more vows to their burden. 166 167

Personality

Zhunti is ambitious, resourceful, and relentlessly attentive to opportunities that may strengthen the West. He is willing to wait tens of thousands of years for a single opening, as shown by his surveillance of Di Jun and Taiyi’s visits to Tanggu Valley before luring out the Ten Crown Princes. 205

His strategic sense is frequently tempered by impatience and overconfidence. He proposed an alliance among the six future Saints for mutual protection, yet later assumed that he and Jieyin could defeat Zhou Ming simply through numerical superiority. He similarly underestimated the newly ascended Hongyun and was reduced to being used as practice during their battle. 52 167 572

Zhunti is also a pragmatist with little attachment to appearances when the Western Teachings stand to benefit. He considers enduring humiliation worthwhile for talent or fortune, protects defectors from the Chan Sect despite Yuanshi’s wrath, and exposes a temporary ally’s involvement when threatened by Nuwa. 548 550 560
