Background

Hong Yun used the divine ability One Thought of Samsara on the Stone Egg before Sun Wukong's birth, making the being within experience one hundred lives in a single thought. The resulting Stone Monkey retained the accumulated wisdom and instincts of those lives without clear recollections of each one. Hong Yun also left him Floating Island's foundational inheritance. 466

Three months after his birth, Sun Wukong discovered Water Curtain Cave behind Flower Fruit Mountain's waterfall. After passing through it and finding its grotto-heaven, he was crowned the Handsome Monkey King by the mountain's monkeys, though he preferred the more scholarly title “Monkey Doctor.” 467

His cultivation and inherited knowledge immediately disrupted the Buddhist Sect's intended plans for him. He saw through Guanyin's disguise, rejected Patriarch Bodhi's offer of discipleship, and demonstrated divine abilities that surpassed Bodhi's own versions. 476 477

Sun Wukong combines a scholar's habits with a battle-maniac's instincts. He studies literature, martial arts, music, chess, dance, and experimentation, and his hundred lives give him unusually broad knowledge of governance, diplomacy, and human conduct. 468 500

He is notably courteous even when provoked. He treats Underworld officials politely, accepts the lowly Bi Ma Wen post without complaint, and believes an office's worth comes from benefiting the Three Realms rather than its rank. 481 502 504

At the same time, he fiercely rejects having his fate dictated by others. Learning that the Buddhist Sect, Heavenly Court, Dragon Palace, and Underworld had all been maneuvering around him leaves him furious at the idea of being controlled. 508 His Chaos Demon Ape bloodline also gives him an intense love of battle; the stronger his opponent, the faster his fighting spirit and strength rise. 515
