Background / History

Aizen's early research in the Ninja World sought to break the boundary between body and soul. By exploiting dominant will, nature energy, chakra, and the Spirit Transformation Technique, he pursued a process he termed Shinigami Transformation: the conversion of a soul into a form capable of wielding power distinct from chakra. Kagami Uchiha's transformation reportedly required twenty-one Soul Surgery procedures and intense personal obsession. 3 45

In Soul Society, Soul Reapers are the essential agents of the world’s reincarnation system. Souls guided onward by Zanpakuto re-enter the cycle, while Soul Reapers regulate the balance between humans, Hollows, and souls. 178 180

The Gotei 13 originated as an assassin organization under Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto and ultimately became Seireitei’s principal protective force. Its members possess entrenched loyalties, ideals, and factional identities shaped by decades or centuries of life. 170 181

Soul Reapers are fundamentally soul-dominant beings. A physical body can function as protective armor, but it limits a Soul Reaper to roughly one-third of their original strength; shedding that body allows the Soul Reaper’s true form to emerge. 114 117
