Background / History

Dan Katō was a Konoha shinobi whose Spirit Transformation Technique had reached great mastery. During fighting in the Land of Rain and against Sunagakure, his attacks left Sunagakure's puppeteer forces unable to resist him, earning him particular notoriety among their puppeteers. Danzō nevertheless considered intelligence gathering and assassination the technique's most effective uses. 78

When the Third Hokage sought a means to eliminate Li Yao, Dan immediately agreed to learn the Reaper Death Seal, accepting that its use would require him to die alongside the enemy. His insufficient knowledge of sealing techniques prevented him from understanding the scroll's formulae, however, and he concluded after more than a week that he could not master it. 92 109

Three months later, he accompanied Biwako Sarutobi during the dispute with Ayase Sarutobi. Dan initially intervened solely to prevent Konoha comrades from attacking each other, but later stood ready to stop Ayase from destroying a secret Hokage message. 128 129
