Background / History

Kimura Takuya’s research began with the difference between insubstantial phantom clones and clones capable of physical impact. The basic Clone Technique produced weightless chakra forms with no attacking power; using wood as a core provided stability and weight. Takuya then used himself as the model for a continuously synchronized duplicate, only to discover that he had independently recreated the Shadow Clone Technique 9 10.

Li Yao credits Kimura Yao’s father with teaching him the technique. During his escape from Konoha and subsequent pursuit, clones let him expose enemy abilities without risking his real body. A clone defeated the Root squad outside the laboratory, while later encounters with Sarutobi Tenchu’s team supplied information through returned memories 51 69 70.

The limitations of ordinary clones prompted Li Yao to develop the Perfect Clone Jutsu. A chakra-only duplicate could not eat, required chakra to remain active, and dispersed after sufficient damage. Possessing a real body solved some problems, but sustained chakra production also required a soul. Li Yao eventually combined soul possession with will purification, creating vessels suitable for long-term impersonation and independent assignments 197 198 199 201 202.

The Uncontrolled Shadow Clone

Kotoamatsukami bypassed a clone’s chakra defenses and rewrote its embedded consciousness to prioritize Konoha’s protection. Li Yao immediately attempted to dismiss it and refused to accept its chakra back into his body, but the clone remained active: the genjutsu had overridden his control of the technique 335 336.

The rogue clone inherited Li Yao’s memories and existing techniques, making it capable of anticipating his responses. Its intended solution was to cut off his access to Naruto’s world rather than defeat him outright 336 337.
