Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was present at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy as a non-teaching figure known as the Grandmaster. After examining the certificates of three incoming work-study students, he immediately fixated on Tang San's innate full soul power Blue Silver Grass and inferred that Tang San possessed twin martial souls. He dismissed Tang Lin's half-level innate soul power as worthless. 4

He first attempted to recruit Tang San in the Seventh Dormitory, but Tang Lin rejected him on Tang San's behalf. Yu Xiaogang continued trying for half a year, eventually securing Tang San as his disciple after Tang Lin ceased interfering. Upon seeing Tang San's Clear Sky Hammer, he became convinced that teaching Tang San could restore his own reputation. He again refused to consider Tang Lin as a disciple, calling her a “Waste” because of her innate soul power. 5 6 7

Yu Xiaogang accompanied Tang San on multiple Soul Hunting Forest expeditions. During the hunt for Tang Lin's second soul ring, he was poisoned and badly injured by a Parasitic Trumpet Flower. Later, after Luo Sanpao was poisoned by Ghost Vine's Minute Seeds, the shared poison spread through Yu Xiaogang's body; he swelled and exploded after the Ghost Vine was killed, leaving him comatose until Tang San's care and Tang Lin's soul power helped him recover. 10 11 12 13

After Tang San entered Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang arrived to reunite with his disciple. His remarks about Shrek offended the students, while Zhao Wuji openly challenged the value and originality of his Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls. 33

Tang Lin later sacrificed Yu Xiaogang's martial soul, identified as the Golden Holy Dragon, through the system. The process altered Luo Sanpao into a Beast Martial Soul but reduced Yu Xiaogang's soul power to Level 19. His newly altered first soul skill produced uncontrollable chains of foul-smelling farts rather than the attack he expected, humiliating him before the Shrek students and staff. 34 35 36

At Shrek, Yu Xiaogang tried to involve himself in student training and academy decisions. His excessive training methods caused several students to faint or convulse, leading Flender to physically reprimand him. Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical knowledge despite his low cultivation level. He treats Tang San as proof that his theories are correct and repeatedly frames Tang San's accomplishments as validation of his own teaching. His need for recognition is especially clear when he tells Yu Tianheng that he will prove he can teach an unparalleled genius despite being considered a waste himself. 33 114

He is deeply biased toward Tang San. He prepares special meals exclusively for him, argues against excluding him from competition, and reacts with extreme grief when Tang San appears dead.
