Background & History

Jiraiya spent years outside Konoha gathering intelligence on Orochimaru while following the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy of a disciple who would change the Ninja World. He had once believed Nagato, bearer of the Rinnegan, to be the Child of Prophecy. 82 89

As Minato Namikaze’s teacher, Jiraiya considered adopting Minato’s orphaned son, Naruto Uzumaki, after Minato’s death. He ultimately continued his intelligence work instead. His later visits to Konoha exposed Naruto’s harsh upbringing and left him disillusioned with the village leadership and deeply guilty for failing the boy. 82

The Third Hokage summoned Jiraiya back when Kakashi could no longer adequately train Naruto. Jiraiya observed Naruto in secret, discovered that Naruto could detect his surveillance, and awkwardly attempted to impress him with his Sannin title. Naruto initially declined his offer of instruction, but Jiraiya eventually became his teacher. 82 83 84

Jiraiya recognized both Naruto’s immense potential and the danger of his Kyōka Suigetsu-based Kekkei Genkai. He tested Naruto with Hari Jizō, only to have his senses manipulated, and concluded that Naruto’s visual illusions could be countered by denying vision and relying on other senses. 84 90

He brought Naruto into the Mount Myōboku contract, introduced him to Gamabunta, and supported his Sage Mode training alongside Fukasaku and Shima. Jiraiya hoped Naruto would become the Child of Prophecy, though he also came to see Sasuke Uchiha as a possible agent of change. 87 89 90

During Konoha’s crisis involving Orochimaru, Sunagakure ninja, and Hollows, Jiraiya protected civilians while initially holding back out of dissatisfaction with the Third Hokage. Once he committed to battle, he eliminated multiple enemy jōnin and later fought Hollows with the Two Sages. 123 125

Personality

Jiraiya combines a flamboyant, lecherous public persona with the habits of an experienced spy and battlefield veteran. He introduces himself with exaggerated flair as the “white-haired Toad Boy,” yet Naruto sees through both his surveillance and his attempts to use status to impress him. 83

His guilt toward Naruto defines much of his early conduct. He tries to provide Naruto with ordinary childhood experiences, such as rest, street food, and ice cream, but realizes too late that Konoha’s past treatment has left a distance he cannot easily bridge. 85

Despite his cynicism toward Konoha’s leadership, he remains attached to the village and especially to Tsunade. This loyalty repeatedly places him in conflict with former students and allies, including Naruto and Pain. 151 249 289
