Background / History
Orochimaru was born in Konoha and became Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple after passing the ninja examination. Although naturally reserved, he shared warm memories with Jiraiya and Tsunade. The deaths of his parents, friends, and disciples, together with the brutality of war, made him increasingly cold and intensified his concern with the fragility of life 95 111 126.
His wartime accomplishments established him as a Sannin and qualified him to compete for the Fourth Hokage position, though Minato Namikaze was the stronger candidate. After his forbidden human experiments were exposed, Orochimaru fled Konoha and became a rogue ninja 95 126.
He subsequently joined Akatsuki, where an attempted ambush on Itachi ended in immediate defeat by genjutsu. Repeated body-switching had weakened his soul and left him particularly vulnerable to Tsukuyomi. The humiliation strengthened his desire for the Sharingan and led him to target Sasuke as a future vessel 154 259 311.
In Otogakure, Orochimaru established an agricultural economy, a commission-funded ninja force, and an extensive intelligence network. Naruto and Minato both recognize his administrative talent, although the narration warns that his habit of putting experiments first will eventually cause him to neglect the village 152.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a pale, androgynous appearance, snake-like eyes, and a slender tongue that he frequently uses to lick his lips 101 111 116.
- Snake-like mannerisms: His expressions and movements reinforce his cold, serpentine presence 95 111.
- Paler replacement body: After escaping a sword wound through a white snake, his reconstructed body appears even paler than before 103.
- Later form: During the confrontation with Killer B, he is described as handsome and chilling, with a scarlet tongue 275 276.
Personality
Research is Orochimaru’s overriding priority. The possibility of eternal life draws him into Naruto’s work, while the prospect of elevating human existence excites him enough to accept opposition from the entire Ninja World. He values original ideas and recognizes Naruto as someone capable of creating a new era 101 116.
He is manipulative and enjoys unsettling opponents. Against Naruto, he repeatedly attacks the younger shinobi’s confidence; against Itachi, he exploits guilt over the Uchiha massacre and Sasuke’s rejection of the clan. Backed by Soul Society, he also takes pleasure in threatening Kumogakure from a position of overwhelming advantage 102 260 276.
His ruthlessness does not always involve deception. When accepting Sasuke as a disciple, he openly explains that the apprenticeship also makes Sasuke an experimental subject and carries a risk of death. His teaching is methodical: rather than relying chiefly on intuition, he breaks down principles and explains them step by step 223 336.
After becoming a Shinigami, Orochimaru resolves to sever the emotional bonds that might restrain him. He tells Tsunade that emotions are a burden, yet still offers her a sincere invitation to join Soul Society and revive the Senju Clan 284.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Ninjutsu and Survival Techniques
- Snake Substitution: Escapes burning bodies and reconstructs himself elsewhere. During his duel with Naruto, a small white snake emerges from his mouth and becomes a replacement body after his chest is pierced 102 103.
- Shadow Snake Hands / Sen’ei Jashu: Produces snakes from his arm to attack or restrain an opponent 102 103.
- Evil Snake Arm Burst: Follows restraint with a large snake that swallows Naruto and explodes 103.
- Shadow Snake Swarm: Brings numerous white snakes out of the ground to bite the Eight-Tails 277.
- Extensive escape repertoire: His awareness of life’s fragility drives him to develop unusually numerous life-saving techniques 193.
Body Manipulation and Regeneration
- Liquefaction: Decomposes into white mud or viscous liquid, then reforms. This allows him to escape Itachi’s stabbing attack and survive being cut apart by Killer B 260 275 276.
- Limb regeneration: Regrows his hand after its snake swarm is severed 276.
- Corrosive contact: Pieces of his body cling to Killer B and corrode exposed flesh. Similar liquid is delivered through surgical-knife attacks 275 276.
- Resistance to acid: Reconstructs himself after Mei Terumi’s attack corrodes his body and half his face 284.
- Limit: Despite his resistance to physical attacks, he must still guard against internal damage from Killer B’s Liger Bomb 276.
Body-Switching and Cursed Seals
- Art of Immortality: Extends his life through switching bodies; his original plan is to place a Curse Mark on Sasuke and later take over his body 311.
- Cost of body-switching: Repeated use weakens his soul and reduces his resistance to Tsukuyomi 154.
- Heavenly Cursed Seal: A technique he developed whose failed applications cause loss of sanity and berserk Chakra. He recognizes similarities between these failures and Hollowfication 104.
- Change in approach: Shinigami Transformation offers a route to longevity that also repairs his earlier deficiencies 259.
Shinigami and Hollow Research
- Transformation experiments: Maintains a former Sand Jonin transformed into a Shinigami and tests its abilities against Hollows 153.
- Hollow evolution: Encourages Gillian to consume one another in an attempt to produce an Adjuchas. He observes that Chakra–Reiatsu mutation reduces their evolutionary requirements 152.
- Kekkei Genkai research: Finds that bloodline-bearing shinobi can awaken Zanpakuto rapidly after gaining Reiatsu; he suspects the resulting abilities enhance their existing Kekkei Genkai 219.
- Transformation infrastructure: Helps establish the basic Shinigami Transformation facilities in the Land of Demons 217 219.
- Transformation risks: Warns Sasuke that emotional attachments and obsessions increase the chance of becoming a Hollow. Most such failures erase memories and leave the subject consumed by negative emotions 336.
Reanimation: Spirit Modification
- Reiatsu-based reanimation: Modifies Impure World Reincarnation into a spiritual-pressure-based technique that, according to his explanation, allows permanent control over reanimated subjects 276.
- Shinigami conversion: Gives reanimated subjects Zanpakuto and uses them as Kage-level Shinigami combatants 276.
- Documented subjects: Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha, the Third Raikage, and Kakuzu 260 276 333.
- Psychological warfare: Uses Itachi’s reanimated parents to destabilize him; their manipulation ultimately forces Itachi to kill them again to prevent their becoming Hollows 260 263.
- Snake Ghost: Creates a self-aware subject from his own genes, combining a human body with Reiatsu. It inherits his unusual bodily abilities and obeys him without hesitation 276.
Combat and Elemental Ninjutsu
- Swordsmanship: Duels Naruto with the Kusanagi Sword and quickly assesses his skill through probing exchanges 102.
- Taijutsu experience: Has fought hundreds or thousands of times more battles than Naruto; his experience is described as not much inferior to Jiraiya’s 102.
- Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall: Blocks an experimental Shinigami’s sand spear and protects valuable research subjects 153.
- Zanpakuto attacks: Uses an unnamed Zanpakuto against Killer B and projects a white blade attack 275 276.
Surgery, Poison, and Administration
- Eye surgery: Removes Nagato’s Rinnegan and successfully replaces them with ordinary eyes 270.
- Tailed Beast suppressant: Develops poison from research on the Nine-Tails and One-Tail. Once introduced through snake bites and scalpels, it disrupts a Tailed Beast’s Chakra and combat ability 277.
- Village management: Maintains Otogakure through agriculture, textile production, ninja commissions, and intelligence scouts 152.
- Centralized authority: Does not tolerate internal factions challenging his control; the village nevertheless shows little discrimination between ninja and civilians 152.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Alliance with Naruto
Orochimaru initially agrees to join Naruto’s research while retaining his interest in Sasuke. Naruto refuses to surrender Sasuke and forbids him from killing the Third Hokage. Their disagreement becomes a battle in which Orochimaru tests Kidō, Kyōka Suigetsu, and Hollowfication firsthand 101 102 103 104.
Their subsequent discussions of biology and higher forms of life deepen the alliance. Orochimaru understands that supporting Naruto means opposing the existing Ninja World, but considers the potential evolutionary breakthrough worth the risk 115 116.
Konoha Crush and Experimental Research
During the Konoha Crush, Orochimaru honors his promise not to kill Hiruzen, instead severing his arm and leaving him badly wounded. He escapes and later admits responsibility for releasing the Hollows that devastated Konoha 125 126 128.
His former popularity turns into widespread hatred. Nevertheless, Root continues seeking research exchanges with him, while Naruto visits Otogakure to inspect his Hollow and Shinigami experiments 152 153 171 172.
Return to Konoha and Sasuke’s Apprenticeship
Orochimaru returns with Minato and the captured Obito, offering technology, eye transplantation, and instruction for Sasuke. Konoha initially rejects the teaching proposal, but later agrees to cooperation that gives Orochimaru access to the research process 219 220 221 223.
Sasuke accepts the apprenticeship despite its stated risks. Orochimaru teaches him snake techniques, explains the limits of the Sharingan, and eventually provides a Shinigami Transformation potion 223 225 336.
Soul Society’s Wars
Orochimaru confronts Itachi and uses reanimated Fugaku and Mikoto to undermine him emotionally. Elsewhere, he rescues Rock Lee for a potential research arrangement and later performs the operation that removes Nagato’s Rinnegan 260 263 270.
For Soul Society’s Tailed Beast collection plan, he attacks Kumogakure with modified reanimated fighters. Poison, regeneration, and Snake Ghost allow him to defeat Killer B and extract the Eight-Tails, leaving Killer B presumed dead 275 276 277.
During the later war, Orochimaru fights Tsunade and Mei, survives their corrosive attacks, and attempts to persuade Tsunade to join Soul Society. After the war, Naruto entrusts him with Kaguya’s Chakra 284 303.
Parallel Worlds and Projected Footage
In a parallel world, another Orochimaru accepts Sasuke as an apprentice and becomes absorbed in the soul research Sasuke brings. He regards soul-based immortality as safer than body-switching and insists on joining an interworld expedition to obtain more research data 234 290.
Later projections expose Orochimaru’s original plans and demonstrate the value of his scientific work. Multiple villages try to recruit their respective Orochimarus, but many choose Soul Society instead, expanding its research capability 311 316 334.
